Given that the Neo is supposed to be able to play existing PS4 games with improvements... how do we know that what we saw wasn't essentially Neo mode PS4 games? Obviously there is no way to tell just by watching or even playing but there is a chance that the hardware running the demos is possibly Neo-esq in nature.

Sony now knows it will be a hard sell to get consumers to buy a more powerful PS4 and question the performance factor for psvr. Notice the remark about how it's about optimization while you you have people like Todd Howard talk about needing more power for fallout 4 vr. That's why Sony is stuck with smaller games like batman vr because the PS4 can't handle open world games needing those high frame rates for vr

Arkam has great graphics but psvr would need then to scale the game back. So instead we get a shallow add on only for psvr. Same thing with battlefront

Sony did show a lot of great games, but I do wonder when those games will release. Keep in mind the current next big release, The Last Guardian, took almost a decade. It was announced for PS3, and we are at the cusp of new consoles again.

The real reason why Sony isn't talking about their next console is two-fold, they want you to keep buying their existing one, because Neo/PS4K isn't going to be available for another number of months. Second, it's not good PR, because it is most definitely going to look like PS VR isn't going to perform well on PS4 and they were forced to introduce Neo/PS4K.

The other kicker though, is that the people Sony is trying to court with the PS4K/Neo, the high end/core gamers that are early adopters want the best of the best. They are now likely waiting on Scorpio, and this is why MS announced it. MS basically played Sony's strategy against Sega Dreamcast with the PS2. Announce that yours is going to be so much better, if you just wait a tad little longer. We know how it went. Even more telling is Andrew House discussion of PC gamers. Well, Xbox is now encompassing PC gamers. Play Anywhere is at the heart of this.

MS just made a genius move that might actually turn the battle around!

Just look at MS press conference they announced an Xbox One slim only to then shoot themselves on the foot by announcing Scorpio. Sony wanted to focus on games and push VR, had they taken the time to talk about Neo it would have made people hesitant to get PS VR and spend less time showing off VR games, announce new games and show off new game footage to games we already knew about

That being said, we have no indication of what the RE7 Psvr experience will actually be when it launches. I guess the reaction to most of the other Psvr experiences playable on the floor at E3 has me a bit worried, it hasn't been good. The teleport mechanic being shown off in so many of these demos seems awfully awkward.

We all already know the PS4 Neo is coming. What we don't know is when and how it will affect PS4 games or PSVR. I'm not sure when not knowing about something was beneficial to consumers. Knowing about Scorpio a year in advance will most likely impact Xbox One sales, but it also makes it so consumers can choose wiser this holiday season. Anyone buying an Xbox One S can't be upset when the more powerful Scorpio hit's store shelves within a year of buying one. I'm sure there were marketing reasons Microsoft had for making the announcement early, but the benefit to customers is something we haven't seen before. I'm not surprised Sony is trying to twist this into being a bad thing, but it is odd seeing gamers complain about being informed.

I think MS is fine with having 3 XBox offerings.

Similar to what Apple does with the Mac line.

Vanilla XB1 is a standard XBox which you can get for dirt cheap and it introduces the people who haven't made the jump to next gen yet.

XB1 S is for the people who have had and XB1 from launch and want a smaller one with the benefits of 4K and HDR.

Scorpio is for the tech buff like me who wants the lastest and besttechnology ASAP.

Holding back information is beneficial to Sony and Sony only. Putting it out there is not beneficial to MS, but very beneficial to consumers, because you get to choose. Just like how you get to choose if you think EA Access has value.

In the long run, this is good for MS in the sense that they build trust with users. MS is not there to screw you over, but welcome you by giving you options to choose.

I don't see it as "twist this into being bad" as much as it is reflecting on their direct experience with the introduction to the PS4. I remember thread after thread of "but they didn't show the box" and " why show it now if you don't have a box to show?" comments. Apparently, Sony took that to heart when thinking about this announcement. As for knowledge of forethought, well, that's pretty much moot with a mid-gen update as is. None of us expected this radical paradigm shift in strategy. Most just figured it would just be a shorter generation. Now it's just more of a "when?" and "how much?" prospect.

This is Sony's Andrew House claiming he was "surprised" by the announcement. If you read the article he also states Sony learned their lesson about announcing a new console without showing it. I'm not sure what they learned since they announced the Neo before e3 and no pictures or concrete specs.

The Xbox is evolving faster and moving to multiple platforms giving gamers more choices than ever before. The games you buy today will work on Scorpio next year and PC now. The only ones concerned over console sales seem to be PlayStation fans, Xbox fans moved past sales. Xbox and PC are merging giving developers a much, much larger user base than console alone. It's not a competition for sales anymore, the games are moving beyond that. Digital Xbox games will be playable on Xbox One, Xbox Scorpio, and PC with crossplay and game saves between all three platforms. You won't need to spend money on re-masters since the same game will play on all three taking advantage of each platforms strengths.

Some really good points. Sony is ensuring that PSVR can be enjoyed by ALL PS4 customers, those who bought the vanilla version and those who will buy NEO. Microsoft,on the other hand, wants only those who can afford Project Scorpio to enjoy "Real VR" as Phil kept on describing at the presentation.

Ultimately the best console is the one with the games and at present only the PS4 is delivering on games on a consistent basis (So far this year it has had 5 major exclusives as opposed to just 1 from Microsoft). With all of the games announced over the last two years for the PS4, quite a few to still come out this year as well as the 50 odd releasing this year for the PSVR, I think it is safe to say that the Playstation brand will have plenty of games.

Sony did have the best conference but NO WAY was Andrew House surprised. Sony were showing the Neo until the week before. They even announced it as real days before the conference e.g. "it is real, wr have one now and we are saying it first."

The Neo's specs were too low to show at the conference, Sony found out and pulled it.

While tech heads will go crazy for them, the mass market will continue to go for where the games are, where their friends are, and where mindshare tells them to go. That's incorrect. Scorpio is basically the Xbox 2. Firstly MS themselves said it will be VR capable, which means VR is exclusive to it. Secondly why would they need all that extra power then if it cant have its own exclusives. If you listen carefully, MS walks a fine line in the presentation, you have to read between the lines. Scorpio is MS's way of exiting the current generation softly in a transitional move. They need to kickstart the next generation but cant be seen giving up on xbox one.

In PSVRs case, that was 2 years ago when there was a realization that good consumer VR was a reality and was inching closer to coming to market (the VR landscape shifted and that stalled its launch). We had players like Samsung, HTC & Oculus all banging the VR drum. You need to get your product mindshare out in the early going for something like this. You want to be included in the conversation from day one and synonymous with a platform like VR. And they had hardware to show and software too (as others have stated). I'd say that falls into the category of looking at hardware launches in comparison to the landscape quite well actually.

In the case of Neo, the right time to talk about it isn't right now. They let you know it exists. You know the gist. And if you are talking about a box that will play the same games, only prettier? Then yea, now isn't the right time to talk about it - either from a consumer point of view or a business one. And they've largely ensured that when they do decide to talk about it, hype will be built because people will know all info will be available with actual hardware and games to see.

Clearly Sony now feels the need to be silent, probably for 2 reasons: 1. do not stop potential buyers from buying a PS4 right now 2. do not stop PS4 fans to already be let down by the much inferior specs of PS4 Neo compared to project Scorpio. So, like people on this site, everybody who would matter can now see that a new PS iteration is coming. Neo and Scorpio are being treated as "high-end" products. The mass market won't care about 4k or teraflops. They just want to play what others are playing.
As for PS fans being disappointed, I'm sure there are some that already are after the Scorpio announcement. But, having been "underpowered" on more than one occasion in a generation has shown that power alone is not enough. More power doesn't make an average game suddenly great. It makes it a prettier, mediocre game.
I think Sony's silence on the matter had a LOT to do with their perceived mistake of not having the box ready to show when announcing the PS4. They took a lot of flak for that. Also, they are treating the PSVR as a console (regardless of the way people want to see it). Which means that it needs some space to breathe as it is due to release relatively soon. Sure, there's the business aspect of not wanting to cut off your nose to spite your face (cannibalizing potential sales). But, that's the part where you remember that this is STILL a business.

Well said and totally agree with you. What can Sony do? The PS4 Neo is already far along the line, has been sent to developers for some months now accoring to Eurogamer, should they make the tough decision to abandon this investment and come up with a new design to release end of 2017 as well? Personally I think it is the only right decision if they want a chance to assure themselves of keeping the lead over Xbox in the long run. My predictation though is that Sony will not do such a thing, they will try to upclock the Neo design to get a bit more out of it and go ahead. Obviously MS can do the same, it will be easier for MS as they have much more time to tweak for even more performance.

Furthermore I noticed that Sony did not provide a lot of release dates for their biggest blockbusters (GoW, Days gone, ...) and looking at Sony's trackrecord this means those games are out for another 2 year or more. The Scorpio Xbox will have launched by then, will have Halo 6, Forza 7, Scalebound 4K etc etc. Sony might have won the conference with a great games lineup for the future but I predict they lost the lead in the big console game on june 13 2016.

Honestly speaking, this early announcement of availability for Scorpio was what really muddled an otherwise great but expected software showing at MS media brief...

This was them really trying to command the attention from Sony and there dominance, but the problem is... what's the point now. Their ego system is confusing... do I buy an original XBO? Do I wait for the Smaller HDR enabled XBO S? Do I say screw it and hold out for Scorpio? Maybe I'll get Scorpio, but then wait... All XBO exclusives are now going to be available on PC so why even bother with an xbo family of products?

Honestly they could have gotten away with the XBO S announcement and focused on software. But this seemed like a move to say we are the most powerful.

The argument Phil used by letting Developers know now is kinda silly, because developers are the first to know outside of first party, and they'd have been briefed. This really was just to get the jump on Sony since they've known that Sony was doing the same thing.

But what does the consumer do now?

I think this was a great move by Sony to acknowledge the fanbase's knowledge of the new device's existence, but simply not go into any detail about what it is, or availability. Double down on the games and wait to demonstrate the breadth of its features and software and specs when things are more concrete.

It's honestly the best move, and it keeps the focus on what's already available and what games to look forward to. And this is why Sony had such a successful show, they know the messaging and they understand their consumer base... This is how you hold on to the lead you made by expert messaging to your consumers. They don't have to react.

Their ecosystem isn't confusing. It's all about choice. Cheap launch unit, better slim with 4k, or enthusiast for real 4k gaming and VR. They all play the same games on the same network of xbox live (even with PC players now). Having Xbox games on PC won't make people skip a 200 dollar entry level xbone but it will lead to a bigger community, market share, and jump start their PC ecosystem since Xbox live is already huge. It will bring in some folks to the MS ecosystem who already game on PC. It builds faith in MS.

I haven't gotten a xbox yet but I'm damn sure getting one now. Either a cheap ass launch unit or a slim, prob a slim and maybe a Scorpio down the road. MS sold me with a better system, 4k playback, all for less money.

It's possible to change. Not at the last minute if form factor and sourcing has begun, but if they're not at that stage, they could adjust some things. For the most part, the system itself won't change as they're likely to use the same form factor for the chip itself, but heat considerations would have to be taken into account.

What Sony can and can't do depend entirely on where it is in design and production. Since no release has been made, Sony could scrape it for a more powerful console and simply claim that's what it was all the time.

Just like PC gaming you but one disc and when you put in the machine , depending on your machine and its power you can either play the game on VR , HD or 4K by changing the game settings ... Developers decied what goes in the game and what gets cut , by this more power they are no longer limited to frame rates or resolution and with cross play they can open more avenues for multiplayer options ...

For everyone who is going to disagree with this , take a minute to read it , think about it and read articles that clear state ps4 neo and Scorpio are not new games consoles. MS has the games now, but those games aren't driving current x1 sales. Why do people think MS is going to just bring the games with Scorpio? What logic is there to believe that? What has MS ever done to make anyone believe they will somehow out pace Sony in game appeal? What I saw this year was just a whole lot of what we keep seeing from Xbox, and that's some quality games, that don't drive sales to new customers who aren't already into them. For the most part, the variety they offer, doesn't sell. What is more powerful hardware going to achieve? If MS had some grand plan for the games being offered, why not show them this year, instead of making 1/3 of their show a repeat of games that were shown last year?

It really defies logic to think MS is somehow just going to deliver now that Scorpio is coming out, because every change in generation...which this essentially is, tends to see a drought of software. The only benefit of this new paradigm is people can simply play the games that are available for the current system...so no real reason to upgrade until something comes to really take advantage of it. I'm sure the graphics enthusiest will be OK with it all though.

Sony isn't in serious trouble. They redirected to games, because that is what sells the systems, and it's plainly evident showed enough games to get people excited for the system, or keep them happy with their purchase. MS has still yet to figure out that it's games that sell systems, not Teraflops, not marketing hyperbole, not the hardware itself. Games. plain and simple, and 18 months isn't going to bring anything more than we've already seen beyond superficial upgrades to whatever anyone else can play.

BTW...what devs are making game for Scorpio? Apparently MS was just now letting them know that it exists and the specs(a complete lie btw). That wasn't the reason they announced it at all. New paradigms require new ways to announce things. 18 months in advance to give specs though....that's quite out f the ordinary. Even at console reveals, actual specs are kind of rare....although MS was pretty sparse on actual details in their Scorpio reveal.

Only real reason to announce it now was in anticipation of Sony's announcement. Otherwise, they just look like they have no faith in the current console. Sony itself now has all the time in the world to do what they want, and establish their message based on the reaction to MS announcement. Think of it guys, Microsoft announced Scorpio as a powerful console to come designed with VR in mind. They know people are going to probably go to for one solution for VR so they are hoping this hampers Sony's success with their VR. People are likely going to wait to save up and for the ecosystem to mature for VR before they pounce on it so not as many people will buy Sony's console VR when a console with 4x the power as PS4 is coming some months away; considering when they are actually considering a VR purchase.

Yeah, they seem to be trying their best to hamper any VR excitement that surrounds PS4. First was Phil saying VR wasn't that big of a deal, then halolens at last years E3, and this year, it's wait another 18 months and get a better experience. Of course, Sony's Neo is also rumored to add to VR, so it doesn't really hamper Sony as much as MS may hope.

Truthfully, people aren't going to wait it out for MS. MS just doesn't have the brand appeal to be worth waiting for. All this stuff is maintained in the hardcore sector, and hardcore people tend to have their own preferences set in stone.

Whether it's the same depends on why Sony is releasing the Neo. The actual specs don't really matter. MS is claiming to release the Neo to have a console for the discerning gamer. Sony may be releasing it for different reasons. If the reasons are different, then how it's presented may be different, as if we believe Sony that they want content to show on it first, then they want to sell the system for a specific purpose beyond the discerning gamer.

On top of that, Sony really only acknowledged it's existence. It would be like saying, "yeah, we have PS4 in the works" before they revealed the PS4. On the Xbox side, they say, "This is a console we're releasing on -X date-, and here's why, etc, etc, etc". The type of announcements are completely different, but effectively serve the same purpose of acknowledging that there is a new console coming at some point.

As far as release dates, more than half the games had release dates by Q1 2017, and 40% were for this year. They just didn't reveal the dates at the conference. Sony only stated that the Neo was a real thing. They are talking about it now to clarify people's questions, but still haven't given specifics.

Sony showed a lot of games to be excited for. They've also said that the games will be playable on both PS4 and Neo. Amd and Sony are partners. A relationship just just as important to Amd as it is to Sony. IF (big if) Sony chip orders have gone into mass production then I admit it's unlikely a situation either company would backtrack on.

If the chips are using Zen and Polaris, with the finfet fabrication process, as has been rumored or speculated, then they haven't started production yet. The first wave of these chips, which just started June 1st(2 weeks ago), with the first wave being the octo-core summit ridge CPU's(not GPU's/APU's). These will launch in October to OEM manufacturers.

Given this, it's possible that it may not even be possible to release the Neo this year if it's based on the finfet architecture. Given this, if Nintendo is using similar chips, then this may be why they had to delay the NX as well, and it's likely why MS couldn't release this year either.

People always complain about how the current consoles don't have enough power but aren't willing to pay for it. BC will probably be a thing going forward, but I'd imagine there is a point where legacy support will have to be cut to be able to offer the advancements necessary to push gaming forward. They were surprised, You could tell from watching the Sony conference , the end of the conference was supposed to show the PS4K and it was pulled at the last minute and they just threw in some filler with more footage of a mediocre zombie game.....you end on a big wow moment....it wasnt there..... we all know Sony and the 10 yr lifecycle, there was no big hardware upgrade coming, it was a smaller unit that can do 4K resolution thats it, That is a Sony console cycle....MS threw you that bone in the opener, then hit you over the head with a more powerful box in the end. Nice marketing spin they put on it saying it wasnt ready to show......really??? you could have dropped some specs, but there were none to give...... of course they have to whip something up to counter MS now....and it will be "the most powerful ever" and the dance will continue......

It'll be interesting to see what Sony does with that information. They are kind of in a tough spot. Sony is going all in on VR which means they have to launch this year. People might be willing to wait another year, but given the specs for the AMD 480 some could jump to PC for slightly more money. Someone with a half decent PC can buy a 480 without the need to upgrade a power supply or much else. So $800 for Oculus and a GPU compared to $850 for PSVR and the camera if you don't have one.

Sony won't design a whole new machine. But they will now be behind Oculus, HTC and Microsoft for three or four years. Their saving grace would be the ability to add an external GPU. Hopefully they did opt to build that in.

As usual Sony fanboys are hilarious. Where are the Scorpio games? You guys are repeating that like 6 teraflops don't mean anything. We already know what 6 teraflops means, damn good looking games. Games that are 18 months out, why would they show them now? Sometimes reading comments on this site is like seeing an audience ooh and ahh at game footage only to hate it once the title screen is displayed.

Looks to me MS is trying to cut the generation short for MS and start a new generation with scorpio as the new xbox.
