Wii U Console Sales Climb in Japan

While sales results in North America and Europe are infrequently shared and occasionally vague, it's easy to keep track of Japanese equivalents with the country's weekly charts. The trend has been largely the same for a long time — the 3DS is dominant. Last week brought a slightly underwhelming début for Super Mario 3D World, and while Mario's latest has had a relatively modest second week, the Wii U hardware sales have nevertheless continued an upward trend.

Seeing as Japan isn't getting their PS4s until next freaking year I'm not surprised. It's the holiday season, they have to buy something too, and I'm sure the market has already been saturated with PS3s.

We all saw this coming from Japan. Nintendo and Sony never have issues on their home turf and sell well enough for each other. Microsoft should be the only one worried in this region.

On a side note: Anyone else think it is absurd and unfair that Sony chose to release the PS4 so late in their home region?

Yep with no competition out in japan, the wii u has the whole market for themselves, making it the console to get for christmas, so they better make the best of it. @gamespawn it is unfair but sony knows that they have japan locked. This is why they focused in the US and UK heavily. Also japan will get a bunch of games aimed specifically at them so the wait will be worth it.

I'm pulling for the wii-u's sales, as I am for the ps4 and xbox one as well.
Watching any of these 3 fall out of the race would be terrible.

Yeah in the face of mobile gaming consoles need to show that they are still relevant beyond just a successful launch to the 'core' gamers. Any one dropping out would be an analysts' wet dream, but would make me very sad.

Consoles will not die, if anything dies it will definitely be smart phones, new expensive iterations out every six months, every market implodes. The console market imploded in the 80's i believe, so the smart phones by natural cause of history will crash too, but when i dont know. Gaming is a huge community from the fgc, to rts to fps, we wont let it die. Phone gaming is not seeious gaming thats the difference

It seems Nintendo was right when they said that it would "Be more of a marathon than a sprint" for the Wii U.
Which is fine with me so long as I get my next-gen Zelda and Smash Bros.XD

Soooo like PS game consoles? I'm glad X1 and PS4 held back from Japan so Wii U get the jump they need. I'm getting my 2nd Wii U next week! Gotta own them all at one point! ^~^

Wii U will sell just fine this generation. How can it not? Mario Kart 8 will sell at least 10 million Wii U's. Super Smash Bros. at least 5 million consoles. You see where this is going.

Beastforlifenoob..... really... they kept mario going and we still got these.
motion plus gaming.. that is actually pretty hardcore. Meaning the games take skill rather than waggle now.
metriod a fps used it, red steel 2 used it well, hell 3ven cod plays better with the nunchuck setup.

im scratching my head at why this is not being used on the other systems when it is superior.

we had zelda, xenoblade, last story, pans tower,. Really people sony just canned the creator of shadow of the colossus, game why!

sonys 2d games almost non existing, sonys puzzle games , no where to be found... you can argue that 3rd parties pick this up, yet you would be admitting that nintendo competed and wow last gen against the whole industry not just sony and ms. You are also admitting that sony and ms could not compete against a weaker console because they lack game play quality and graphics is their only draw.

im done with movie gaming until they can rival real movies... im not amazed by cgi any more ethier, being a zbrush members sort of took that awe away long ago... now all I see is gaming play and art..im very hard on story tellers also and directors.

@Beastforlifenoob Dude not posting this, I've already schooled you on this "Mario sequel" rant you have. Just because Mario is used as a character in another game ie. Sonic and Mario Olympics or Mario cart does not consitute a Super Mario sequel... get over it.

I love Nintendo, but to call a weeks sales of the Wii U that are higher than the previous weeks sales a "trend" is very presumptious indeed. A trend would be over a longer period of time. An article perhaps showing the last 6 months stats would have more impact and credibility.

Good to hear. I hope it keeps climbing. Seems like Wii U's gonna have a bumpy road through it's life with how on and off it's sales have been, but that's fine as long as it survives. And I'm almost positive 2014 will be an amazing year for it.

2013 was not the year of Luigi. It was the year of the 3ds. System seller after system seller kept rolling out, heck Nintendo made light of the factby having a "so many games" promotion and that was before Zelda, Layton and Pokemon.

2014 will be the year of WiiU. DKTF, Mario Kart, Smash, X, Bayonetta 2, SMT VS FE, Yarn Yoshi and potentially Zelda. And these are just the 1s we know about. Miyamoto is meant to have a new IP, it wouldnt surprise me if Retro have more than 1 game and who knows what else Nintendo has up their sleeves.

WiiU aint dead its just had a slow start.

The Wii U sold a dismal 4 million in first sales year and it needs a lot of luck to remain competitive with PS4 and XBox One. Wii U could be in last place within 6 months.
