Microsoft chooses AMD Fusion II for XBox 720

KitGuru: "OK, the chances of the next XBox being called 720 are 50:50 at best but, for now, at least you all know what we’re talking about. While the name and final design for the box and packaging might still be up in the air, the internals appear to have been locked down. KitGuru investigates."

FLOWCity4930d ago

So..This is all speculation?....

I heard the 720 will run on pepsi and the PS4 will run on coke.

vsr4930d ago

I hope it will do 720p native

Hideo_Kojima4930d ago

Do they have cold fusion reactors and use the nuclear energy from the water in the coke and pepsi?

Awesome.

Cheeseknight284930d ago

Well, looks like I'm getting a PS4 then.

lzim4930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

fuck I looked and was all expecting it to be a real breakthrough from all the bloody nonsense those idiots have been perpetrating for all these years.

regardless they have no reason to go back to x86 based chips. It would screw over backwards compatibility which they promised to not fuckup again.

--

also the article is bullshit. nvidia was NOT always locked in for graphics. whatever cocks they sucked at the eleventh hours royal screwed over a couple of other good candidates.

imvix4930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

They really dont care about giving people backward compatibility, how else will they sell HD remakes? Not to mention they wont like you playing your old games, they would rather prefer you went out bought new games for the new console, so they can recover money lost on hardware sales.

PC is where the BC is at.

RedDead4930d ago

It's likely by the time the Xbox 720 comes out there will be a 360 emulator for Pc anyway. There always is, I have a PS1, Ps2, snes, Gamecube, GBA and Sega megadrive on my Pc. I feel I deserve a free Ps1/2 etc since I payed for them already. And mine broke.

imvix4930d ago

It takes years before emulation can be perfected.

I can currently play about 95% of the ps2 games on my PC. They run in 1080p @60fps. However there is no sign of 360 or PS3 emulation yet. Hence it probably is a long way and perfecting it will take even longer.

Its insane the gaming library now present on the PC. Includes Arcade, All consoles upto PS2 and Wii. Then you have the PCs own library which is massive as well.

Mystogan4930d ago

Screwed Backwards compatibility? they are talking about the 360 here not the ps3.

You CAN play 90% of all the games the original xbox had.

NeutralGamer4930d ago

Why would you need a Xbox emulator anyway... 75 % of the games are already on the PC...

Substance1014930d ago

Its more like PC has 90% of the games on the Xbox 360. Plus all of them are in HD ;-) an Xbox 360 emulator would be the last thing on the mind of a PC gamer.

Doubt MS are gonna make another Xbox and right now not even thinking about designing it.

No Way4930d ago

Of course they are..
I highly doubt they wouldn't be.

VenGencE9994930d ago

You MS fans are fooling yourselves if you think there will be another console from MS. They jumped in for a quick buck and they have been successful.

They give 2 craps about the gaming industry and have found their bread and butter with charging people twice for their online service and will ride that out until Live is no longer viable...

starchild4930d ago

Would you take a bet? Put your money where your mouth is. Of course there will be another Xbox. You're an ignoramus if you think otherwise.

RSX on PS3 is not a 7600GT. It has more raw vertex and pixel shading grunt than a 7900GT.

7600GT: 5 vertex shaders, 12 pixel shaders @ 560mhz

7900GT: 8 vertex shaders, 24 pixel shaders @ 450mhz

RSX: 8 vertex shaders, 24 pixel shaders @500mhz

Furthermore, the 360's Xenos is nothing like the X1900 and is considerably slower.

Xenos: 48 unified shaders @ 500mhz (split for vertex and pixel tasks)

X1900XT: 8 dedicated vertex shaders, 48 dedicated pixel shaders @ 650mhz

Yeah you're right what with the 360 being a cash cow for Microsoft and how they keep making hundreds of millions a year from XBL and whatnot - Let us not leave out Halo sales, GoW sales, and everything else.

There isn't a single stockholder in Microsoft who wouldn't sign off on a new console because they make money from it.

Here is a link to Fusions performance preview, Doesnt look great at all. Even if Fusion II was double this performance it would still be unimpressive.

http://www.tomshardware.com...

Barely runs games in 720p at a decent frame rate.

Mystogan4930d ago

what if it was 10x the performance?

they are talking about the Fusion II you can't judge its performance from by its predecessor. its like judging the ps3 by ps1's performance.

Substance1014930d ago (Edited 4930d ago )

"What IF?"

That is a big question. Fusion isnt even released yet, it would take them few years to develop Fusion 2.

Moores Law suggests processing power doubles every two years. If Fusion 2 was to be released 2 years after the original (probably in time for Xbox 720) it would have mostly probably increased 2x in power.

Youd have to wait many years before we could get Fusion to work 10x to the performance we see today maybe a decade, dont think MS is waiting that long on releasing the next Xbox.

"its like judging the ps3 by ps1's performance."

You do realise PS3 came atleast 10 years after the PS1. For Fusion II to have the same difference to Fusion it would need that many years atleast.

Biggunz4930d ago

What if a frog had a glass ass?

iagainsti1204929d ago

hey idiot did you read that whats in the link that you posted that Fusion Cpu they tested was in a netbook thats not the same line microsoft would select a cpu for a future game system it would be from the bulldozer or bullbozer 2 line which are main stream/high end cpu's. The APU units in those cpu's are based on the HD5800 - HD6800 series Gpu's.

Hoje03084929d ago

iagainsti1204927d ago

@ Hojo0308 dude this is the internet get over it

tplarkin74930d ago

It is the right time for such a rumor. If MS will release a console in 2012, info will begin to leak.

lzim4930d ago

but they won't be releasing another console so soon while they can continue to milk Kinect and Sony and Nintendo aren't ready to make a move.

How stupid would they be to launch early again and have both Ninteno and Sony (and other players) have a big tech advantage from waiting? All the the platforms continue to be profitable. They should all just continue to ride it out.

Fishy Fingers4930d ago

MS being first to market with the 360 is what helped cement a foothold in this generation for their system.

reynod4930d ago

How much longer do you expect them to carry on with this hardware. 360 launched in 2005 its already been 5 years now. by 2012 it will be 7 years old, That a long generation already. I dont think they will be cutting the gen short if they released a console in 2012.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

culturedvultures.com
piroh8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies6d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX7d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody7d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic6d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

rob-GP3d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic "They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo..."

lol, you mean:

NES, SNES
GameBoy, GameBoy Advanced, GameBoy Colour, GameBoy SP
DS, DSi, DSXL
3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL
Wii, Wii U
Switch, Switch OLED

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_7d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga7d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie5d ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly6d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga6d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit6d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic6d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_7d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21837d ago (Edited 7d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies7d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.

Microsoft to Add Copilot AI to Video Games

It takes a people to program the AI then that AI is used for who knows how many games eliminating countless jobs which only grows as AI is used for more and more game creation functions.

Why all the hate? Im actually excited about this! Always wanted this kind of immersion, and an AI companion with me all the time helping me out knowing the status of my skills/inventory/progress and giving me tips on the best approach or how to craft something specific is game changing for the industry.

Hate all you want about AI, but this is just the start and I can see the potential already. You wont be complaining in the next 5-10 years about this, but rather complain if a game hasn’t implemented it.

MrDead11d ago

Yes we can't wait for the work of others to be used without the need to pay them so that MS can profit even more from the people they fire.

I_am_Batman11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

There is no chance I'd ever use something like this, especially if it's not part of the core game design, but a layer on top of it. It's way too much handholding. Many games already feel like busy work, because they don't let the player figure things out on their own. Having a real-time interactive guide defeats the purpose of playing the game in the first place in my opinion.

If this were to become the standard like you predict, we'll see more and more video games get away with bad design, because people will just be used to ask for help from the AI companion anyway.

Number1TailzFan11d ago

Well Nintendo don't need this with some of their games these days, with invincible characters, items, easy bosses etc.. they do the hand holding built in

helicoptergirl11d ago

Takes "hand holding" in games to a whole new level.

AMD Could Revolutionize Handheld Gaming In 2024

Shaz from GL writes: "AMD could spur the beginning of a new era in handheld gaming with their upcoming APUs"

gameluster.com
rlow116d ago

To me the most important hardware is the battery. Doesn’t matter how powerful the chips are.

ABizzel116d ago

Eh…. It’s a combination of multiple things.

The battery is hugely important as it allows you to have ideally 4 - 5 hour gaming sessions.

The more powerful the processor the more games developers can share to the handheld, nd of course the better said games perform.

From there display, software, and ergonomics matter, as a good display/software will allow games to be more vivid, run at variable fps 30/40/60 ideally, and good ergonomics means it’s comfortable to play for said 4 - 5 hours. Everything else is gravy at that point.

rlow114d ago

I know we all want more power. But it’s sad that 4-5 hours is considered good now. It really shows how batteries have progressed at a much slower pace than hungry components.

redrum0615d ago

Of course it matters how powerful the chips are for it to be future proof. Don't you want to be able to play new games?

Neonridr15d ago

the Switch proves that you don't need the most cutting edge power out there to be successful.

RaiderNation15d ago

@Neonrdr that doesn't prove anything because only Nintendo could get away with that. Their games aren't the most complex/graphically ambitious and Nintendo fans don't care.

Vits15d ago

@Neonridr

If anything, the Switch proves the exact point "redrum06" was making. Yes, it might be successful, but it's definitely not future-proof. Just look at how many games and franchises completely skip the platform.

redrum0614d ago

I have a Switch, and recently got the Legion Go. I havent touched the Switch ever since, purely because of its inability to play even older games at a decent frame rate. For anyone wanting to play multiplatform games as well, people should skip the Switch.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 14d ago
Marcus Fenix15d ago

There’s no way you’re getting that 40CU 16-core APU in a handheld. That’s too hot and power hungry for that. The highest end APU they’re suggesting is going to end up in gaming laptops that can cool a 100W chip.

Jingsing15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I think these articles get things a little out of perspective, Steam Deck has sold around 3 million and Switch has sold 140 million. But if you are browsing certain parts internet you'd think the Steam Deck had sold over 100 million. If articles are going to continue to circulate like this and continue to put the Steam Deck in the same arena then I'm comfortable calling the device a flop.

Neonridr15d ago

Steam Deck, while considerably more popular due to it's lower barrier of entry, is still a niche device with the likes of the ROG Ally and others.

I own one and it's really nice to be able to play some games on the go or in bed, but it'll never fully compete with a system like the Switch.

Skuletor15d ago

Especially when they're not in the same price range, the Switch is considerably cheaper.

gold_drake15d ago

sure but theres still a limit to what u can put in there ha. power consumption would be the biggest hurdle. and cooling.

Demetrius14d ago

I wana try out a pc handheld but I would like to experience a steady framerate etc I don't wana have to keep going into my settings trying to make things smoother in gameplay, that's the only thing that's been keepin me from getting one I've heard others having to go into the settings time from time that'll be annoying
