IGN: Apple iPhone 4 Hands-On

When Apple launched the iPhone 3GS last year it was clear that it was just the evolutionary step that would precede a more drastic aesthetic and performance overhaul. Today Apple introduced the next major milestone in the iPhone series with iPhone 4.

Can't wait for the iphone to dump at and t.

can't wait for iphone 3GS to get price cut.

Corepred45109d ago

agreed man. iphone is just the best. people are always trying to take the top spot but so far no. I really didn't think the iphone was a big deal until i got one. and wow far exceeded my expectations. iphone 4 is gonna be a purchase for me.

Delt45109d ago

I've had my moto droid for about 6 or 7 months. I just put the 2.2 froyo on it this weekend. (yes its rooted and runs at over a gig overclocked) and added the flash capability. I still feel apple is falling short against the android software and the user ability's.

thewhoopimen5109d ago

it was never about hardware specs or built-in software in the first place. Remember the first iPod? It was inferior in terms of feature set to everyone of the mp3 players out there. Same thing with the first iPhone. People keep harping on features. Throwing more and more features into a phone to me is a lack of understanding of the consumer and what they primarily value. Apple still has every manufacturer including Android/Google beat in spades in this regard. They understand what it is 99% of the consumer wants, stability, ease of use, and ability to connect to someone you care about without hassle.

Nice but 4G isn't available everywhere.

Fel085109d ago (Edited 5109d ago )

I just didn't see anything that really impressed me. I think I'm just going to stick with my Android and my iPod Touch.

hoops5109d ago (Edited 5109d ago )

The New iPhone is a big improvement over the last one, however this phone now is on par with Android phones for features.
Apple has finally adressed features that Android had for ages...and Android still has a few more here and there...and it will just get harder for APPLE as a whole new crop of Android phones with faster processors and more features are coming before the year is out.
Apple is playing catch up now

jdktech20105109d ago

can you explain those features to me? I've had a 1st gen iphone since it came out and never thought about moving but mine is starting to have problems (silence/ringer toggle is broken) and I'm interested in looking. I'm looking at the $199 price point and my 2 year contract is up so i should be able to change companies if I wanted.

I like the iPhone 4 so far and loved having my 1st gen phone....I'm really curious about the so called amazing advantages I hear that Android has...practical examples...if you say open source, that does nothing for me

hoops5109d ago (Edited 5109d ago )

Flash Support (Hate flash but until HTML5 can offer what Flash does now and all those websites that run it, the iPhone lacks it)

HDMI Output

built-in turn-by-turn navigation

tethering/hot spot support for up to eight devices with Wifi also

Onscreen virtual keyboard and Physical Keyboards (choice of handsets)

over the air apps download via broswer

Skinable OS (THATS WHY OPEN SOURCE IS GOOD. fULLY CUSTOMIZABLE)

You know what? Forget what I posted above. My point above is simply this:

Almost all the features the new iPhone has, Android had in most cases before it. So what Apple brings to the table is not new and its going to look old real fast once the newer Android phones come out before this year is done.
For you obviously the new iPhone is a great choice for an update...i am just saying that the New Iphone is not inventing anything new here and is actually playing catch up to Android for the new features it just got.
The one thing I do like is the new Screen for the iPhone and the gyroscope feature for games. But other than that, nothing else is "new"

@hoops

HDMI (big woop)

iPhone can also do turn by turn with Tom Tom.

Notice how he doesn't talk about how Tethering and Flash kills battery life or the fact that Flash isn't even ready to be deployed on handsets. Steve was right to block that garbage from getting on this phone.

With EVO's 5.5 hr battery life don't expect to do these things for long.

iPhone can also download over the air.

Skins are nice but the iPhone's icandy is more than enough for me.

Did he mention how the Android's app store doesn't filter out malware?

Delt45109d ago

I have the moto droid. I rooted it back in January and i am running the new 2.2 froyo with flash player apk. How can you say flash is not ready for handsets if i have been running it sense this last weekend?

You also fail to tell that the Tomtom app is like $50. and android has it for free....what was that again?.... ya free.

I have heard so much about the malware but have seen no proof of it. at least not in the App market.

android can update and DL OTA (over the air). You can change out battery and the sd card. You can reformat, use roms, build your own unix based programs and theme anything and everything. There is no limit to the android operating system, Just the hardware.

Facts are always better than just being an apple fanboy

With any other company i'd agree with you, but this is Apple. They may be playing catch up - but the majority of people don't know that and don't care, and will buy the new iPhone thinking it is the peak of technology to date and the best that can be bought.

And i'll be one of the few that aren't ignorant but make the choice to get the new iPhone, mainly due to the great experiences i've had with my 3G and the amount of great apps that I use on a daily basis. The fact that the iPhone 4 is a massive improvement on every level makes it a given for me.

jdktech20105109d ago

That's kinda where I'm at right now.....personally, this goes down to whether I want AT&T or Verizon....if I know a couple things about the Incredible let's say.....

1) Do androids sense touches as well as the Iphone does....I guess how easy is it to use the touchscreens and android platform

2) Does it do music? I could probably make my 1st gen iphone an ipod until it dies but just wondering and how well does it do music?

I like the voice turn by turn GPS....that's a major plus so I don't die trying to look at directions but I'll just figure it all out. really it should come down to whether I want Verizon or AT&T more

Megulito5109d ago

how can u have that name and not know anything abouti anything i would expect my gfrandmother to ask these questions

thewhoopimen5109d ago (Edited 5109d ago )

Guys... get the big picture. Having more features is NOT a sell. The average layman can give a crap about HDMI out, tethering hot spots, or skinable oses. That brings close to ZERO to the table. That's like features for teens or geeks. When is anyone ever going to tether 8 devices to a wifi hotspot in their Freakin life? Like what a Lost episode situation? F**k that, there won't even be f**king wifi or 4g service if some catastrophe happens.

people want pretty minor things, call quality, battery life, size, durability, usability, OS/Network stability, and easy connect-ability to their friends. If you have all these "features" polished to a shine... you have the best phone on the market. MORE is not better. Look at how Apple positions their product on their website. Watch the vids. No stupid turn by turn GPS, or Cool Apps, gizmo features 3D-gyroscope, retarded hotspot feature etc.

http://www.apple.com/iphone...
: How does it look. How durable is it. How easy is it on the eyes. How can i use the camera to connect better with my friends and family? Why am I the designer, passionate about my product? THAT'S IT.

Give me stability with the OS first. The Android phones crash like a mofo all the time. My friend got the mytouch, then the HD2, and he's still having trouble with doing basic things like ... keeping his apps running. It's retarded when he keeps claiming how this and that spec of the camera, blah blah is superior to an iPhone 2g/3g/3gs and yet, he can't keep the damn thing running for more than a day or two.

1 more month then I can celebrate 1 year since i stopped playing and uninstalled the game.

We are on the same team brother!

Rynxie1d 11h ago

I uninstalled d4 after they kept screwing over the sorc build and I beat the game. I also uninstalled immortal after reading the end. I actually went back to d2r here and there.

just_looken1d 1h ago

The only thing i enjoyed in D4 was the mp side but after they gutted my hunter build then again wanted me to grind for over hundred hours each season i too quit like you.

Its insane though a year has already passed.

Daeloki3h ago

Hard pass, gave it a chance on launch with a friend, but we made it a bit past act 1 only to realise how tedious it was.
