This is why many will start going GaaS. You see things like FF7 Rebirth selling below expectations but a GaaS game sells insane amounts. Incoming industry spam now.

GamingSinceForever18d ago

A good game is a good game. GaaS will only become a problem if mediocrity dominates. Which is highly likely, 😂

CrimsonWing6918d ago

True and I’m not trying to take away that HD2 might be a good game, it’s more that I loathe this direction for gaming. GaaS good or not, it’s still GaaS and this industry is hurting for ROI, which is why GaaS exists in the first place. Could HD2 been the game it is without being the GaaS model? Why choose GaaS over a traditional game model?

That’s my point from my comment.

Eonjay17d ago

Whats incredibly ironic is that absolute storm of anti Sony GaaS articles earlier in the year... and then their first GaaS release is the biggest selling game of the year. None of the complaints even allowed for the possibility of a game selling simply because its good (you know, the most important thing).

And imagine Sony's confusion when they read all the hate about their plans, only to get straight up run over by a horde of people throwing money in their face.

The gaming media in particular have been engaging in a social engineering experiment where they decide what games are gonna fail and which are gonna succeed. The façade is falling apart at the seems though as it becomes incredibly apparent that they don't represent the people they are trying to influence.

CrimsonWing6917d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Oh dude, I know. I get that people like it, but it’s still GaaS, it has micros, it has battle passes. In my eyes, I always question why make it GaaS if it could be a traditional game instead… the answer is always unsatisfying

It’s even more hypocritical whenever people bring up micros and whatnot in a GaaS game people like and the response is, “You don’t need to buy them!”

Then I see Dragons Dogma 2 with micros that you absolutely don’t need to buy, but the response is, “This is unacceptable and f*ck Capcom, canceling my order!”

I’m just like, wait a minute, but you just said a while back that…

Travesty17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Helldivers 2 is doing good because it’s a different from the trend of Battle Royale multiplayer. It’s an old fashion co-op game. It’s fun and it shows there can be more than one genre of shooters. Not necessarily because it’s a GaaS.

FF7 Rebirth is a very good game. I beat it and it’s deserving of the reviews that it got. However comparing it to the Remake, the sales didn’t aligned with it. 1 reason because it was released in 2020 when a lot of people stayed home due to the pandemic. Video games sales were great in that period. Even games not near as fun sold well. 2. It had so much hype since the PS3 remake demo from 2005.. it finally came out after so many years of anticipation. And last point is not a big as a factor but games successors tend to not do as good as the previous.

and that's why studios including son's camp are investing in games as a service.

Eonjay17d ago

The reason why I wasn't worried about them going live service is the have a pedigree of releasing good games. For the longest time, people have rightly pointed out that Sony was serious lacking in the multiplayer category. We never said they should switch up completely. All we wanted was them to expand their sights into the genre.

Hedstrom17d ago

Really impressive for what i would say is a AA game. Only shows that it isnt only about the budget of game that matters.

Eonjay17d ago

Yes and no. They clearly got a lot of help from Sony (as per the credits) and I don't believe that a true independent AA project would have access to all of that. Or at least not at the quality. For example, Sony produced all the music and cutscenes and advertising for them. Sony also fronted the development cost, provided the IP and let them develop it for 7 years!

So while the title is comfortably AA, Arrowhead got a lot of help that a completely independent AA studio would not have access to.

Looking at how this and Stellar Blade turned out though, I definitely agree that less can be more. And honestly AA has been kicking AAA's ass for quite some time now lol.

CantThinkOfAUsername17d ago

Unsurprising. The game deserves its success. If you want to do GaaS, this is the model you follow. What I'm surprised about is Mat's tweet about FFXV being the all-time best selling FF game given how much people love to hate on it.

If only the game wasn't so barebones. Out of the super fun core gameplay, the game is a barren land. They better make much easier "major orders", because the player base has mostly moved on.

I think that A lot of the player was snap out of existence, after 177 regions was forced to go dark.

In those regions in which they took the game down... that was only for new purchases. Anyone who already bought it could play just fine.

I really hope they expand the war to where our foes get to super earth like in helldivers 1 I’d imagine the game by then would have tons of stratagems and the vehicles by then

MIDGETonSTILTS171d 11h ago

It’s important to establish both successes and failures in order to make community engagement feel genuinely impactful, and not just a predetermined outcome on rails.

They obviously have a bunch of content waiting for deployment, and they plan to trickle it out at whatever pace keeps the community at their desired size.

The game is still much, much more popular than they ever planned. And antitank mines feel like small potatoes compared to the vehicles and new enemies we know are down the road.

Buckle up for a long term plan.

gold_drake1d 9h ago

i love how they do this, real consequences etc.
