Exclusive: Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Says Players Only Remember Best Games

In an exclusive interview with TMTPOST, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and President Jim Ryan revealed that the core of the PlayStation experience is emotion. “A best game can arouse certain emotions of the players, such as making the player feel excited, feel the adrenaline rush, or feel happy or sad,” said Ryan.

Misleading headline clearly meant to smear and be taken out of context. Here is the full quote

Ryan: This is a very good question. I think this is similar to a previous question, that is, what is the importance of PlayStation Studios, especially their ability to develop games and demonstrate platform advantages. Therefore, people like me need to keep those two things in mind and realize that it is better to wait and have a great game than to rush and have a game that is okay or quite good. Players only remember best games rather than OK games. If it is a best game, players may want a sequel, and they will also want to buy a sequel, but no one really cares about a game that is only OK. Of course, due to financial and product portfolio considerations, we will also give pressure to studios to deliver a certain product within the expected time. But in general, we don't want products that are OK, we want the best.

Good-Smurf1051d ago

Not surprised, theres a reason that opinion piece to sack Jim Ryan stuck at the bottom of the page for 3 months.

Extermin8or3_1051d ago

ahhh you noticed that too...

SullysCigar1050d ago

Saw this too. Whether you agree with it or not, it's disgraceful that such an inflammatory piece has been pinned there for so long. Shame in you N4G.

porkChop1051d ago

How is it misleading or smearing? It's what he literally said, you even quoted it.

"Players only remember best games rather than OK games."

And he's not wrong. Good games are the ones that get remembered. I don't understand what the issue is with that?

arkard1051d ago

Because it's taken out of context. He saying it in response to delaying a game.

Teflon021051d ago

Because it's not a general smug statement. It's a we'll give a studio the time they need to finish because customers will only really care for the best ones long term. So rushing makes no sense in a value standpoint. Meaning behind it is VERY different. Even if it's said inbetween

derek1051d ago

It's wrong because he's talking specifically about not rushing games. Accuracy matters.

porkChop1051d ago

Your points are all irrelevant. This isn't taken out of context. Whether it was rushed or not, an average game is an average game. There's no smearing going on because there's nothing wrong with the quote, Jim hasn't said anything wrong here. He's right. People don't remember average games. I don't understand what you guys are taking issue with. It seems like you're complaining just for the sake of complaining.

Atticus_finch1050d ago

Smh. Reading comprehension matters you know.

kayoss1050d ago

@arkard
You have to look at the entire context of why he said that. Not just that one sentence.
Players remembers mediocre games that was really hyped.

Pedantic911051d ago

?

He's still saying you only really remember the best ones. I think it's important to ask what exactly is his definition of the best games ? the ones that sell the most ?
There are plenty of what many would considered only "good" or "ok" games to be the best ones in my eyes. Many of these "ok" games that maybe got buried on top of more advertised games or big budgeted titles that could have been a "best" game too if given the chance.

It should be obvious when you see that Sony and plenty others only make use of less than half of their IP's. Put in cold storage mot likely never to be seen ever again because it's either too risky of just wouldn't sell enough due to not being bombastically loud enough. Anyway, the title sums up his entire pretty qoute nicely.

1051d ago
derek1051d ago (Edited 1051d ago )

@Pedantic91, he actually goes on in the interview to say what he considers the best games and no "the games that sell the most" was not part of his answer.

LegoIsAwesome1051d ago

This the same guy that is giving away Sony Exclusives... scratch that.... Sony Timed Exclusives to PC right? Him and Hermen?

Sephiroushin1051d ago

Who cares its working... he is not porting a game that sony just released they are porting games after they are quite old... nobody that want to really play a gamr is gonna wait 5 years for it to release on PC and if the person wait its probably because its a PC only gamer so it was not gonna buy it in the first place anyways

Jericho13371051d ago

The real question is why you felt the need to defend him in the first place. His PR isn’t great at times but he’s only stating the truth here.

Teflon021051d ago

Because no matter what he says or does. People will try spin it alot of times. Better to give context before someone complains

arkard1050d ago

Because there is the stickied post about voting him out at the bottom of n4g that has been there for months. There is clearly an agenda against him. We don't need to twist his words and try to paint him as a worse person though.

CaptainHenry9161050d ago (Edited 1050d ago )

When I saw this news there was another rumor that Sony and Netflix are partnering up to stream games and movies. That could be big for games and movies if they execute it well. Sony is trying to get Netflix subscribers

masterfox1051d ago

Totally agree, but the awesome thing as well from Sony is that they know how to balance their IPs and not reach the point to annoy with same IPs over and over again, they know when is the right time to release a sequel(well most of the time hehe) and also by doing this time lapse gives the opportunity for other new exclusives IPs , so Playstation always maintains it self fresh and new, thats something the competition fails to do . ;)

thornintheside1051d ago

If I wasn't uninterested in the action-adventure genre, I'd probably agree.

Neonridr1051d ago

I think they also remember the really bad ones though too.

ArmorOfGod1050d ago

Right?
“Exclusive: Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Says Players Have Mouse Brains.”

Cool. I love it when the heads of companies talk about their customers like they are clueless fools. I remember every game I’ve ever played and that number is in the thousands.

AirJohnston1050d ago

Lol not only did you not actually read the article, you didn't even read the top comment that gives you the context without having to even click the link

ArmorOfGod1050d ago

@AirJohnston I did, friend. Exact quote: “Players only remember best games rather than OK games.”

AirJohnston1049d ago

If you're taking "best" at its dictionary definition and devoid of all context then sure

jonny8971051d ago

Making juicy headlines out of normal interviews is a cheap tactic used to get clicks.

Yi-Long1051d ago

My favourite Sony exclusive last gen was Driveclub, I’ll never forget how great it was and the fun and excitement I had with it, and I’ll never forget how Sony treated it (killed it), the studio behind it (closed it), and the customers who bought it (it’s now roughly unplayable because they took down the servers).

Samonuske1051d ago

Evolution Studios, with Motorstorm and Driveclub was a studio I loved. But Driveclubs launch was abysmal. It’s also why this statement is important. It was rushed to meet a deadline that Evolution just couldn’t make and that destroyed the game at launch and resulted in the studio being shut down. I definitely think it was unfair especially considering how fantastic The and Vital Evolution was to Sony in the PS3 gen. and as much as I personally love Driveclub. It’s had a tiny player base compared to expectations.

Yi-Long1051d ago (Edited 1051d ago )

I don't know what Sony's expectation was, but while its launch was problematic, it was also relatively quickly resolved, and developers did well to address other perceived issues while adding lots of new and great content to the game. In 2015, it had 2 million copies sold, which made it one of the best selling PS4 games at the time.

Initial reviews were mixed, but the issues mentioned in those reviews were quickly fixed afterwards, and gamers who knew what the game was and what it was trying to do, embraced and loved it.

As it stands, over 6 years after its release, Driveclub is arguably still the most impressive racer of last gen when it comes to graphics and original track-design.

In its genre, which falls between arcade and sim (simcade? Like PGR and GRID) so challenging and skill-based, but without tweaking and 'realism', it's probably THE best.

And with Driveclub Bikes, they had the very best motor racing game. Ever.

When reviewers returned to Driveclub, 1-2 years later, they praised it.

It just feels like Sony were disappointed with the initial delays and the problematic launch, and just never looked at it again. It's hard to imagine they have gamers on the board of directors when they can't see past the few initial issues and see the absolute diamond which quickly revealed itself, and the endless potential it had to keep growing bigger and better.

To me, this is one of the saddest travesties in gaming history. A gem of a game which was absolutely destroyed.

Extermin8or3_1051d ago

the studio was shut but not because of driveclub per se. It was shut down because of the issues behind the scenes many of which were reported on at the time that led to driveclub being in the state it was in after numerous delays and they had clearly said they could get it done by x-date. Sony did allow them to make the big motorbike expansion and some other dlc's so actually a large part of the decision to shut them was probably for other logistical and business related reasons.

KINGS471050d ago

Driveclub is THE best racer out there as of the moment. Maybe GT7 can put up a good fight but Driveclub is literally THE best racer right now. Evolution really gave Ps4 the best racing game lol

Trying to push players over from PC to console is a terrible idea, PlayStation

As PlayStation announces its new strategy to encourage PC users to choose PS5 it is a bitter-sweet moment for PC gamers.

Christopher23h ago

I mean, it's a business based on hardware market. Do we expect them to not even try? It's not like Nintendo doesn't do the same by not putting any games on PC and Microsoft until recently did the same. I don't care what they attempt, as long as they don't abuse the community or lie about their goals/requirements.

Will it work? Not likely. Should we care? No. Let them waste their time, it doesn't affect anything.

RaidenBlack23h ago

let them try ... at the end of the day, we get few extra PC games ... yay ... and also promotes game preservation via PC ... so double yay.

LordoftheCritics6h ago

If only Playstation games provided the ease of pc gaming features.

Primary being very few PS games support m/kb.

Fishy Fingers22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

I wish them the best of luck.

But PC players are often a patient bunch, many will even wait for Epic launcher exclusivity to end until a game comes to Steam.

If they didnt buy the console when its games were exclusive, why would they do it now theyre not?

MrNinosan8h ago

Way more do than you probably think.

ravens528h ago

All you need is that one game that'll make a few switch at a time. Like a game a PC player REALLY wants.

outsider16244h ago

I mean if there's 10 million pc gamers out there...getting atleast just 1 million from there is probably a good thing..right?

romulus232h ago

PC players are not a monolith, I don't know why people keep thinking they speak for the entirety of all PC gamers like they all know each other personally. You think out of the millions of PC gamers not one single person will be impatient?Well Sony is willing to bet there will be. Why would they do it now? People's feelings change and new PC gamers come along all the time that may also feel different about waiting, that's why.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 2h ago
-Foxtrot22h ago

PC gamers are just too patient and loyal to their gaming set ups, something they've spent a lot of money on to perfect. They have backlogs of games which many never get round to finishing or get round to at all and will always have other multiplatform releases to keep them going.

Over the many years Sony has published so many awesome titles such as The Last of Us, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Infamous, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Dreams, Puppeteer, Resistance, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo, Motor Storm, God of War, Horizon, Ratchet and Clank, Spiderman, Ghost of Tsushima, Bloodborne

If none of those games BEFORE all these PC ports convinced a hardcore PC gamer to get a PS5 console then why on Earth would porting them them to PC now make any difference? All PC gamers now know 100% is that they just have to be patient, which they are good at anyway to get a PS5 game 2 years later.

I get GaaS games or multiplayer focused titles but if people really want to play these games they'd have gotten a PS console years ago.

Crows905h ago

Not sure they're aiming to convince the hardcore PC gamer.

Not sure why people are obsessing over his comment...it seems pretty simple to me.

He will do all he can to entice gamers to move to his ecosystem. As you say....exclusives existing hasn't moved many gamers over. But if they get to try them and love the games then they might change their mind about waiting 2 years.

We're in an echo chamber on this site...I've Personally seen people with Xbox and PC setups but no PlayStation. I've also seen people with small PC setups but no console. Not every pc gamer invests thousands and many may decide to put one in the living room.

They're not looking to convince all of players to buy a PlayStation...just a few...and really it is just a PR statement after all...they have to give a reason why single player won't release day 1....not to mention they also have to ensure current PlayStation gamers don't jump ship to PC. It goes both ways and they're ignoring the big L by putting any of their games off their platform.

anast4h ago

"Not sure they're aiming to convince the hardcore PC gamer."

Right here

Kakashi Hatake4h ago

PC gamers think tomorrow is promised. Sorry, don't have time for that.

Michiel19893h ago

it's not just about loyalty or sunk cost, pc is an open platform while consoles are closed platforms. If you for example want to mod, you will play on pc, no question about it. Also if you like indie games, steam is a fucking goldmine for that. I've been playing a lot of indie games over the last years and there just seems to be an endless amount of them on steam. Also not having games locked to a certain fps is a prettty big deal for me and I assume a lot of other pc players.

Walalon2h ago

And don't forget steam sales, you can get a ton of games on an awesome price.

romulus232h ago

And how do you know out of the millions of PC gamers that not one single person ever went ahead and bought a PlayStation console for one or more of those games? People keep speaking for the entirety of millions of PC gamers like they know them all personally. Here's one example for you, I'm currently typing on a recently purchased PC that cost me over twenty five hundred dollars and is more than capable of running any game including Sony exclusives that come to PC and yet I still bought a PS5 so apparently I'm not patient or loyal enough to my set up, hope it's not mad at me for not being loyal.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 2h ago
helicoptergirl22h ago

Who cares? Then just stay on PC and play the waiting game. No big deal. Sony wins in the end anyway.

Number1TailzFan22h ago

I mean if there's any single player Sony games that I actually want that aren't on PC then I would buy said console to play them on. But the ones that I like that aren't on PC are few and far between anyway so no loss for me.

If I game, it's usually multiplayer titles, otherwise I like playing around with some other software.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

shinoff21832d ago

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan2d ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga2d ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--2d ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC2d ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop2d ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.

JackBNimble1d 18h ago

That happens when half of your games are cross platform. I'm still waiting to see what the ps5 is capable of, because they sure haven't pushed any limits.

And where are all these ps5 exclusive games?

sagapo2d ago

Not really surprised as Sony barely has any competition at the moment.
