Why Final Fantasy VIII is NOT One of the Top PS1 RPGs

FFVIII isn’t on the top of most PS1 RPG lists, but it probably should be. It’s easy to label Final Fantasy VIII as divisive when comparing it to other PS1 RPGs. Final Fantasy VIII did have the misfortune of following the ultra-popular FFVII, and it was on a system that was packed with other role-playing games.

I mean it is but "...whatever"

bouzebbal1490d ago

Yes it definitely is.. It came after Ff7, which is a huge pressure and we're still talking about it in 2020

Nu1489d ago

I didn't like the capture skill from enemies mechanic. I played 7 and 9 then tried 8. Never finished 8 either.

IanTH1489d ago

I think it depends on the order you play 'em in. I played 8 first and really loved it. Tried playing 7 and 9 later on, and I just couldn't get into them. It was the PS2 era by the time I tried 'em, but they never did it for me the way 8 did.

MidnightMay0r1487d ago

Ah I see what you did there lol

BlackIceJoe1490d ago

I know I'm in the minority, but I preferred FFVIII over FFVII and with the FFVII Remake being as successful as it is, hopefully FFVIII will get a remake next.

Spurg1490d ago

Its been confirmed by Nomura that the word remake in FF 7 remake is more than just a word. It literally means remake the timeline. I don't think that is a direction that FFVIII should be taking.

TricksterArrow1490d ago

FF8 is, ironically, the one that would work better with timelines and parallel universes.

got_dam1490d ago

I agree. 8 was my first playstation game. I didnt get 7 until months later. 7 didnt give me the same sense of wonder. I have to assume because it was the first gam either ever played of that size and scope. 8 and ocarina completely dominated my late middle school/ early high school time.

Ravenkiss1490d ago (Edited 1490d ago )

Funny how Final Fantasy VIII and Ocarina of Time did dominated my late middle school/ early high school

-Foxtrot1490d ago

I played VII first and then VIII yet I always prefered VIII more

I think a lot of new fans who hadn't played FF before, the new fans that VII brought in, were expecting a direct sequel to VII especially after that "500 Years later" scene so when VIII popped up with a new world and new leading character who wasn't Cloud people were like "F*** that, I'm not accepting this". I even feel people went into the game with a bad mind set which made people pick up flaws, most being nit picky stuff while ignoring the fact every FF has issues here and there.

Squall being an "emo" was considered redundant by the end of the game if you saw his fantastic character development and the reasons through flashbacks which made him the cold, lone wolf we saw at the start of the game. We had the drawing magic issue despite the fact you don't have to draw unless it's for the GFs, we had the island of Heaven & Hell along with draw points and refining cards/items into magic. Another issue was people saying the junction system was far too hard, then the next thing was people saying it was easy to exploit, so was it easy or hard. The last main issue I could see a point in was the Orphanage story issue but if you talked to people and read info logs at the start of the game it did say GF's were known to cause memory issues, it was still not the best executed but are you really telling people the Cloud/Zack twist where Cloud becomes a mope or lost in VII was executed any better? They did lead up to that very well in my opinion. All FF games have these kind of moments but I feel going into VIII feeling p***** off it wasn't a direct FFVII sequel made people tear it apart more and since word travelled, especially without the internet being such a force as it is now, people just went off what other people said about it.

I personally thought the FMVs were better, the characters acted like actual teenagers, Squalls character development was amazing, the music while different was unique and was so memorable even having a vocal theme song and we had some better memorable scenes like the opening, the landing, the waltz for the moon dance scene, the garden battle and so on. Those scenes are why I want to see a VIII remake and why the game deserves it. The best thing the game can do in the remake is set up the Orphanage twist better.

got_dam1490d ago

Oh, the soundtrack is one of the best around in my opinion. Final Fantasy always has good music, but 8 is a cut above. I love the overworld theme and balamb garden. Chrono cross and xenogears are the only games I would say are even close.

Rocketisleague1490d ago (Edited 1490d ago )

I played 8 first, 7 is my favourite. 7 has more depth I'm gameplay, more variety, 8s junction system was so bad due to how easy it makes the game. It takes little to no grinding to complete overpower yourself.

Squall wasn't enjoyable for a decent of the game. I like ff8s orphanage twist too btw. But squall was unlikable. Sure, had a good reason for it but doesn't increase enjoyment of the first few disks.basically, yes, he's a moody kid with good reasons to be. Clouds story was much more interesting.

Anyway, the junction system is hard for some, easy for others, if you understand it, the game is broken.if you don't understand it you're in for a bumpy ride. The game relies on a complicated for yet broken system. Poor game design.

Ff7 one ups it in variety too. Characters have separate backstory and not the same one, just by chance ending up together again even edea was in the childhood lol. Again I don't mind it that much it's pretty standard jp storytelling but it IS poor writing. The gane relies too much on coincidence

Variety wise again ff7 has some random new gameplay element thrown in often, squat battle, bike battle, phoenix tower strategy game, find your way through snowy mountains, snowboarding, submarine etc etc, the list goes on and on. It keeps the game fresh whereas ff8 drags alot in the middle.

Ohh, agree with soundtrack,ff7 was great music, ff8 was the best ff soundtrack...maybe 10 ..

Acecalibur1490d ago

You are absolutely not in the minority.

BlackIceJoe1490d ago

That I find interesting, because all I ever hear is how VIII, sucks compared to VII and it was a huge let down.

Tross1490d ago

With such an update I would most certainly take in those 4K visuals by spending at least 1/3 of my time playing Triple Triad.

projectbyte1490d ago

Final Fantasy IX is still my favorite from that era of consoles.

FF8 is good and one of my faves its not as good as say FF7 or a game like Xenogears I don't think FF8 was suppose to be a top PS1 rpg. But being the top PS1 rpg that depends on who you ask everyone will have a different answer on what the top PS1 rpg is because the PS1 had a lot of great rpgs on it.

RedDevils1490d ago

Just login to disagree with you :)

gold_drake1490d ago

haha thats real petty that u went out of ur way to disagree haha.

and i absolutely agree, which game should be in the top... theres just no definite answer to that. although 7 should hahaha

Jonaspolos1488d ago

Chrono Cross is top 1 RPG of PS1, FF8 is very good with great and interesting story. I’m so hype to try this remastered version on switch. And as you said, it’s about preferences. I personally prefer FF7 as much FF8 and then FF9. But RPG core gamers should try FF6 cause it’s the best story despite the pixelated graphics.

RedDevils1481d ago

Wow check who replied to me. Damn you're a sensitive which is funny hahahhaa. Keep it up :)

Elda1490d ago

Out of the 3 FF games that released on the PS1 I thought FFVIII was the best with FFVII coming in second & FFIX was just ok my least favorite out of the 3.

Stop remaking PS4 games!
Remake PS1 and PS2 games à la FF7R, RE1, Mafia, Half Life style ....
Make Legend of Dragoon, Legacy of Kain etc Remakes happen

darthv7257d ago

Legend of Dragoon... WTH is Sony doing just letting this one squander?

-Foxtrot57d ago

I wonder if their mindset is like “meh we have Final Fantasy what’s the point of our own JRPG”

FinalFantasyFanatic57d ago

@-Foxtrot,
Square-Enix had a long period there where it seems they didn't know what to do with Final Fantasy, I think that time period would have been a good time to revisit their classics and remake them. Now it seems they're going full steam ahead with the franchise, so they have less reason to revisit those older games. I wouldn't mind if they subcontracted them out to other developers, that and I don't trust SE to remake their older games.

Cacabunga57d ago

Simply because i do not think it will succeed.. maybe a bad example but e we got Medievil remake after many years fans have beg asking... result is It flopped hard. Remaking a JRPG is so risky. Only a bunch of hardcore gamers who played the original would buy it. If Sony put even more budget into it then it’s even more risky.

As i suggested before, i think they should start remaking like square did with Star Ocean. Or something similar to Octopath Traveller. Build up some hype and try on higher scale later on..

Terry_B57d ago

Let me tell you about PS1 games that should get a remake actually.

Jumping Flash (As a VR game)
Ridge Racer 1-4 as Ridge Racers 3..just like the pretty perfect PSP RR1.-2 games but with even more content
Xenogears
Cardinal Sin which was full of nice ideas for its time but was plagued by technical limitations
Bushido Blade ^^ just like CS
Bust A Groove.
WWF Attitude. With the same roster, same voices,Only slightly updated gameplay but current gen graphics
Dynasty Warriors..yes the fighting game that was similar to Tekken 2 while it had weapons. As nice as the DW games are..its a shame they never released a new fighting game

And while I am at it.

Thrill Kill ...hell yes.

KyRo57d ago

Ah Thrill Kill, the game that was banned/cancelled but everyone had played 😂 what a throwback!

darthv7257d ago

jumping Flash would make a great VR game. Im actually quite surprised nobody has thought to do that one... even on the indie side for something like the meta quest.

GhostMirror57d ago

Big yes to Jumping Flash! and Ridge Racer revivals. Bushido Blade was cool as well; it was pretty deep and so much different from other fighting games at the time. Einhander was another good non-RPG from Square, which was kind of rare for them in that era.

Didn’t Thrill Kill eventually get re-skinned and released with a Wu-Tang Clan license? 😂

FinalFantasyFanatic57d ago

I miss Ridge Racer so much, give me a new game or at least a collection of the older games! I had a blast playing Ridge Racer PSP on my PS4 a few months back.

FinalFantasyFanatic57d ago

I cannot understand the current business practice of remaking games from the previous generation, especially when they are very much playable today and still hold up well, it's even worse when people are willing buying them again. The PS1 generation is so ripe for remakes, I know more than a few people who would clamour for a Xenogears remake, or almost any game from that list.

Ravenkiss57d ago

and Valkyrie Profile Lenneth. They did Star Ocean 1 & 2 R already, VPL should get the same treatment.

Redgrave57d ago

I assume this to mean that you aren't considering the PSP port to be the remake in this statement? Like a remake of that one?

FinalFantasyFanatic57d ago

That version is quite old though, that was 18 years ago, so doing a remake in the vain of Star Ocean might be worth it (I did not think the PSP was that old until I looked it up).

Knightofelemia57d ago

I'd be down for FF8, and Xenogears. But I would also be down for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. And I wish Namco would get off their ass and remake or remaster the Xenosaga trilogy.

FinalFantasyFanatic57d ago

There's been talk of a Xenosaga trilogy on the proviso that there was enough demand, I hope that actually happens one day.

Final Fantasy Games That Deserve the Remake Treatment

Final Fantasy has a long running history with numerous numbered titles and spin-offs, but which games stand to benefit from a remake?

gold_drake164d ago

i feel like all of them.
well except 2 haha.

shinoff2183163d ago

Agreed. Ff2 though can be made better, so it's not entirely a lost cause. Ff8 will gets its time. I do wish they'd do the old ones. From ff10 and up those ones still hold up pretty well.

kevco33163d ago

Honestly, I've always felt that VII and up 'hold up well' in that regard. The early 3D games just needed a cosmetic update. But the FFVII Remake is so different to the original in execution that a lot of games could be done in a similar fashion and feel far more modern.

I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing (that depends on your personal preference!), just that they could feel very different.

shinoff2183162d ago

Kevco I liked remake but I think your right. Idda been happy with a 1 to 1 remake that looked like ever crisis to. Or both

I'd just love I square would one day give us a turned based one with today's graphics. I can't really think of a jrpg that does that.

andy85162d ago

I'd rather the 13 trilogy just be ported tbh. No matter what you think if it, it shouldn't be the only numbered offline games not playable on new consoles. But naturally I'd play the **** out of 8-12 remakes.

shinoff2183162d ago

I do agree. I'd give it another shot even though I didn't like it at first. My taste change over time. Gta 4 for instance I was so disappointed it lacked so much of what san andreas had I didn't play it for like 5 years. One day went to a semi pro football game(American football) came home drunk and decided to try 4 again. I actually liked it after giving it a fair shot.

Rebel_Scum162d ago

Just make new games. Not every game needs to be remade.

All Of The Final, Final Fantasy Bosses, Ranked

BLG writes: "Final Fantasy bosses are swimming with challenging and exciting battles. Over the course of the series, the game has evolved from turn-based battles to more action-oriented gameplay. That has allowed players to see a variety of battles and types if you’ve played multiple entries across the decades. Bosses you see in more recent games like Final Fantasy 15 are grander in scale than those you might have seen on the Super Nintendo in the 1990s. That doesn’t always equate to them being more legendary, though. "
