Sony's Shawn Layden wants fewer, bigger PlayStation games

Video game makers are struggling to adapt to the internet era. With the PS5 on the horizon, Sony's video game boss has a plan.

-Foxtrot1937d ago

"I don't want to get into me-too, it seems like I think the world's got all the battle royale it needs right now"

Thank the Lord

Kingthrash3601936d ago

What's crazy is the title is all wrong and misleading.
He never said he wants fewer games, just that he is willing to delay them for quality sake.

UltraNova1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

The answer he gave on why Sony not being on the E3 stage is very convincing. This is Sony progressing to the current and even adapting to future times. E3 is indeed a face to face trading relic in today's terms. It should become a fan celebratory event only like Comicon, while "big" news can be delivered at any time the publisher wants to via the Internet or their own events like PSX or PS Destination. I can see their reasoning now for omitting their E3 keynote even If I'd love to see them on stage stick "beating" the hell out of MS one more time.

Potnoodle9991936d ago

It really is! Thank god for Sony and Nintendo. I would be devastated if one of the two left gaming. More so if Sony left as I absolutely love their sp offerings lately. The best stories in gaming.
If both ever left I would probably stop altogether!

trouble_bubble1936d ago

@ultranova
The Comic-Con analogy is spot on. Marvel’s MCU pretty much sat out last year’s. Doesn’t mean they’re in trouble. They just had nothing to show. Fast forward to 2019 and they’re poised to have another love fest. Providing Brie Larson gets her social media white man hate-on out of her system.

UltraNova1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

@trouble

"Providing Brie Larson gets her social media white man hate-on out of her system."

Nope she will not. She's every white-man hating feminist's wet dream come true - complete with no facial smile producing muscles, cause you know smiling is a sign of weakness and submission.

Funny thing is I'm betting Sony is working on bringing back MAG to capitalize on this BR trend. They just arent going to say anything until they are ready.

-Foxtrot1937d ago

I suppose it depends on how it goes with their philosophy

"And we have simplified it to "first, best or must."

If your title is going to be "first" and creating a genre, or "first" and creating a new game activity, let's look at that. If you're going to make an action adventure game, It better be "best" in class. And we have the third category called "must," which is we must support the platform, we must be present when new technology comes out"

First would be making a Battle Royal gane which is so different it's evolved the genre enough or Best where it's going to be better then the most popular one like Fornite.

I don't think any is realistic at this stage, there's no point going against the big boys when what you are doing now works so well.

Dirtnapstor1937d ago

MAG was a great innovative game for its time. They need to bring it back.

ArchangelMike1937d ago

Do you have anything at all to base that on beside your tummy rumbling? Or did you just pull that straight out of thin air?

SuperSonic911937d ago

NO.
Under Layden you have very different games like God of War, Horizon ZD, Spiderman, Dreams, Days Gone, Until Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, etc.

He really cranked up the creative department of SIE.

darthv721937d ago

@above... call it hopefully optimistic that they would bring it back. MAG was awesome and it certainly set the stage for what we have now with huge player count BR games now. It just makes perfect sense to bring back. MAG doesnt get enough credit for doing what it did. Especially today, it's like most forgot all about it.

Michiel19891937d ago

I see them doing a syphon filter BR before mag, then at least they have a more well known IP behind it.
I just hope they dont, or if they make it a BR they do it like playstation all-stars. Lot of the ps cast there, with their own abilities etc

BehindTheRows1936d ago

Based on nothing but the same SonyToo™ stuff that many of you preached when Sony flat out denied ever planning to do the same things Microsoft did during their Xbox One reveal.

OT: As other, more sensible, people have said, thank the Lord! Not that I want to see Fortnite die, per se, I just don't want every shooter to become Fortnite. So, I'm with Layden on this idea.

Rude-ro1936d ago

Mag is not a br game.
And please!!! Bring it back.
It is more like a larger battlefield than it is a br game though.

Omegasyde1936d ago

They helped innovate what BR is today with being one of the first developers/publishers of MMO Shooters.

Seems like everyone forgot that Planetside 1 had like 150 ish vs 150 vs 150. PS2 had even more per side.

Shame about the SoE being sold off.

GrubsterBeater1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

Why is everybody comparing any game with multiplayer and a high player count “a battle royale game, like Fortnite”?

It reminds of these videos of kids who see something and go “hey, it’s Fortnite!!” when they see an old dance or character or whatever it is that Fortnite has in the game.

It’s like these new “gamers” who play Fortnite, call themselves gamers. Fortnite is trash, and I’m so sick of Battle Royale, and I am so thankful Shawn said this regarding BR games.

This is why PlayStation is king. They care about quality games and the gamers that want games that aren’t some cash-grab, Fortnite-esque garbage.

Fortnite is gay.

r2oB1936d ago

@ Darth

MAG is not a battle royale game. I don't even know how you are making the correlation. MAG did not set the stage for battle royale games, it was a completely different type of game. Either you never played MAG or you completely forgot what the game was. You think a huge player count means battle royale? I guess Battlefield is a battle royale game too?

“Layden said he's more willing to delay games to ensure they meet an ever higher quality bar.”

It looks like it paid off with Days Gone. The game looks much better now.

"As the exclusive developer for PlayStation, we always have to set the high-water mark, to push the technology further than anyone else," he said.“

He’s right. PS4 exclusives are some of the best games in the industry. Just wait until The Last of Us: Part 2 releases. The bar will be raised yet again.

“He also hinted that Sony's ready to buy up other game makers as it looks to expand the types of games it makes”

Great to hear. Can’t wait to see who they add to their already amazing worldwide studios!

ArchangelMike1936d ago

If you ask me they should have bought Quantic Dream and SuperMassive Games.

Sevir1936d ago

I think negotiations with quantic fizzled, that's why Quantic announced they're going multiplatform with NetEase so they can stay in business and be independent. :( Which is a shame because Quantic is just the developer you need under your belt with their mantra of high quality narrative driven PS exclusives

ArchangelMike1937d ago

Amen brother! It's good to also hear that streaming is not high on the Playstation agenda, so we can breath a sigh of relief that next gen won't be primarily cloud based.

Obscure_Observer1936d ago

@ArchangelMike

No other but the delusional fools believes that streaming is the future of gaming. I´m glad that both Sony and Microsoft will stick with console gaming for the forseeable future.

1936d ago
KyRo1936d ago

There's like 4 popular BR games and a lot of failed ones on PC. In comparison to the amount of FPS, RPGs and sports games, 4 is very few. The fact apex launched last week and added a heap on new ideas to the formula shows that there's still a lot of ideas to come from a genre that's relatively young.

Sony and Nintendo interviews a bit of a rarity compared to MS it seems. Good info in here. Can't say I like the message around not having bombshells to drop - regardless of whether it's good for business or not, I like surprises...

Nyxus1937d ago

He was talking specifically about E3, that doesn't mean there won't be any bombshell announcements in the future.

ArchangelMike1936d ago

It's such a refreshingly different tone to Microsoft, who are all about jumping on the latest bandwagon. Sony are content and happy to say that's not their jam, they'll do their own thing. They're not jumping on the BR bandwagon, not jumping on the cloud and streaming bandwagon just yet, but are going to double down on brilliant exclusives - although I have to say I don't know how I feel about fewer games. The wait for TLOU2 and Death Stranding is excruciating.

1936d ago
Obscure_Observer1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

@Nyxus

"He was talking specifically about E3, that doesn't mean there won't be any bombshell announcements in the future."

He pretty much confirmed that Sony won´t host an event as an E3 replacement this year because they have nothing of substance to announce this year. Since fewer games with more quality is their new moto, he doesn´t want to set expectations high among Playstation gamers just to disappoint next.

When i said Sony played all their AAA PS4 cards too soon back at 2017, some people got mad and led their emotions overshadows basic logic and common sense. And here we are.

I praise Layden for his honesty and transparency. I wish him the best as he´s now president of Sony´s worldwide studios.

S2Killinit1936d ago

Yep. I really like how they have a much more human approach. None of that scripted title fodder pr ammo.

BizarroUltraman1936d ago

@archangel,

You're one big mofo hypocrite!! Go play your damn Sony games and leave this comment section to less sensitive gamers. Sony is pushing cloud too, they'll find a way to get a BR game and basically copy anything good in the industry. Making it like Sony is a innovator when they just steal ideas from the other two game giants rewrap it and put ps in it and you go buy it like they made it foh

THC CELL1936d ago

Ms need sales and they will say anything even hype a publisher they gained

ShadowWolf7121936d ago

@Mike

According to Layden, their recent output has also been fewer games but higher quality. And technically, in terms of First Party, it's true. The number of titles has been fewer, but each one has been a GOTY contender.

Razzer1936d ago

@obscure

No idea where you pulled any of that stuff from, but it wasn't from Layden.

DVAcme1936d ago

Indeed, I expect PSX this year to have more bombshells than the DMZ. I still think that skipping E3 to directly control the narrative of the PS5 launch and have more time to release a dope show was the right move. Plus, last year's kinda anemic E3 showing is probably because they ARE saving up the big announcements for upcoming PS4 games to have awesome stuff to show for it along with the PS5 announcement. And if Sony ARE considering buying more studios, that's a big announcement. Microsoft may be buying up studios left and right, but Sony already has a long-running reputation for buying studios and doing GREAT things woth them. It's why their 1st- and 2nd-party content is second to none.

Ceaser98573611936d ago

Sony and Nintendo only really talk a lot when they've got a new game/console coming out, usually when it's announced or near launch. The other times would be at an event like E3 or Gamescom.

I think for them it's mostly "let your product do the talking"

gangsta_red1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

"Sony and Nintendo interviews a bit of a rarity compared to MS it seems"

I think it's mainly because both Sony and Nintendo are Japanese companies. MS being more of a western company, it's probably easier for journalists to get interviews with the heads of Xbox and publish them for western sites.

I'm surprised no one is talking about how Shawn wants fewer Sony games.

The Wood1936d ago

Fewer weaker games hopefully. Do high quality as much as possible and drop any titles that could be deemed mediocre or trash.

AngelicIceDiamond1936d ago

Yeah Im also curious about Sony's stance on fewer big exclusives.

BehindTheRows1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

Because that isn't exactly what he said:

"And with our decision to do fewer games -- bigger games -- over longer periods of time, we got to a point where June of 2019 was not a time for us to have a new thing to say. And we feel like if we ring the bell and people show up here in force, people have expectation "Oh, they're going to tell us something."

He'd rather not give us a false sense of hope when he knows games are either far off or not ready in their current state. Quite a few games this gen would have benefitted from this train of thought. ;p

gangsta_red1936d ago

Sony has already released fewer games this gen, how many fewer than what we have already gotten for the next gen?

I would think you would want Sony to make more high profile games or just more games in general.

More doesn't mean they have to be mediocre or trash, especially if they're coming from different studios or different teams of the same studios under Sony.

BehindTheRows1936d ago

Sony is the last company I'm worried about either releasing big/small games or ANY at all. ^_^

Nyxus1936d ago

@ gangsta: this is what he said:

"I think we've done a lot over the last three or four years to get us to a place right now where we're building fewer games per year than ever before, but we're spending more time, more energy, certainly more money, on making them."

So rather than pushing out games quickly, he wants to focus on delivering the best quality. That is a good thing in my book.

The Wood1936d ago

Has your curiosity been quelled guys. .

Sometimes interpretation can spawn many different results . If you think logically. . Why would Sony cull a winning formula. That's suicidal. Concentrate on quality over quantity but still have enough. It's working

1936d ago
mkis0071936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

You people are crazy good at cherry picking...he said they are doing fewer but bigger games...not just fewer games. See 2018 for examples...

No where did he say fewer big games...

S2Killinit1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

@gangsta
Thats so weired you say that. He speaks perfect english... realistically, it has more to do with the fact that Sony and Nintendo seem to be more focused on making games than making PR.

gangsta_red1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

@Nyxus

I read that but I don't agree that spending more money, spending more time and releasing fewer games is the answer. And quickly in relation to what exactly?

Additionally there's no guarantee that those games will be critical hits. Spending more money means that those games will have to recoup even more and that means Sony may have to take less chances to reach that. And if those games don't hit a certain milestone, that could lead to layoffs or possibly studio closures.

I think there should be a better way in the development process that doesn't require spending even more money, especially when triple A games are already in the millions to begin with. Also more time and more energy isn't really an efficient way especially if it means less games.

@Mkis007
"he said they are doing fewer but bigger games"

"No where did he say fewer big games..."

Lmao! That is hilarious!

@Wood
"Sometimes interpretation can spawn many different results"

S2Killinit1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

Aarrghh he said we “are” releasing fewer, but bigger. They are, as in, already.

Basically, he is saying that they arent doing shovelware games. If they make a game, it has to be quality.

gangsta_red1936d ago

@S2killinit
"Aarrghh he said we “are” releasing fewer, but bigger. They are, as in, already."

Blaaarrrgh, and it's only going to get longer and fewer with rising costs, newer tech that require bigger budgets, and bigger teams glaaargh!

You would think Shawn would want to find a way for Sony to make more games seeing as how the few they already have are successful so far.

trooper_1936d ago

Why don’t you read the whole article instead of insinuating nonsense?

ILostMyMind1936d ago

Sony says less because it doesn't have to lie to its consumers as much as Microsoft does. If it were not for the, almost daily, promises of Phil Spencer on twitter, the Xbox would have already failed like the WiiU.

Probably scared of Xbox’s lineup of Sea of Thieves 2, Forza 27, Halo 12 and Gears 33. J/K

IamTylerDurden11936d ago

He basically said that they are spending more time, money, and effort on each game hence why they achieve such critical and commercial success. Obviously it equates to less total games, but the games that release are generally bigger and higher quality. That was the message, putting more into each game rather than simply releasing more games, and he said that IS CURRENTLY HOW THEY'VE BEEN OPERATING and i'd say it's working.

Seems like this pretty much rules out any kind of return for Arc the Lad/Wild Arms/Legend of Dragoon (no, mobile BS doesn't count).

Soap_Z1937d ago

What? The only thing I make sure is that if they return they will be AAA games with great efforts rather than mediocre low budget game

This is very good

kalkano1936d ago

That means they won't return. There's no way in hell they'll bring those games back as AAA. Or, if they do, they're guaranteed to be Action-RPGs, which eliminates the entire point of bringing them back in the first place.

gangsta_red1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

Well Sony's studios have all but abandon RPG games and from the sound of what Shawn is saying they'll definitely be focusing (or wants) on fewer games but will be big triple A titles. And more than likely they'll be western focused types games so any hopes of Legend of Dragoon, Wild Arms or Arc the Lad is not likely.

But, you never know, Sony could lend out those IP's to other developers to make a game.

trouble_bubble1936d ago

Probably because they’ve had other exclusive RPGs fill the void. Horizon Zero Dawn absolutely has RPG all up in its DNA. Arc and Arms never drew half that audience.

Throw in third party partners still working on action RPGs like Nioh 2. Ni No Kuni 2, Persona 5, Yakuza and DQ11 aren’t on any other consoles atm. Bloodborne was huge.

Shooters on the other hand. Console exclusive RPGs they have in spades. The lack of a new Resistance while Knack gets a sequel, is troubling. For Killzone Shadowfall’s flack, it still sold as good as the others. MP was solid.

S2Killinit1936d ago (Edited 1936d ago )

rainslacker1936d ago

Japan Studio isn't what it used to be, and now make more of the mid-tier titles, or provide support for the 2nd party games that Sony contracts out, or ends up producing. I think that works better for them for some reason, but it is a bit disappointing that they have no in house plans to speak of.

There is hope that they can contract out those IP's, but I think that mobile is maybe more attractive for those games given the market base in Japan. There is some hope that maybe mobile may not take as much priority though, as the mobile bubble is going through a bit of a bust right now, and while there is money to be made, the market isn't pure gold like some publishers felt it could be.

@Gangsta

So, is this going to be your console war fan boy BS argument for the next two years trying to bring down Sony. Are you going to spend the next year or two constantly saying how Layden says they're going to make less games? Have you and Obscure conferred over how to properly handle this narrative going forward, or are you two just going to wing it and eventually come to a monotonous accord on how to bring it up at every oppurtunity...which I assume is going to be when people say that MS has no games, which makes me wonder why you care, because you haven't had a problem with MS output this gen, so how few, is too few for you?

Just curious, because I wonder if I should say how you are misrepresenting what was said now, or wait for one of the other thousands of time you're going to misquote him in the future. My time is short tonight, and seems like lots of stuff to read today.

Trying to push players over from PC to console is a terrible idea, PlayStation

As PlayStation announces its new strategy to encourage PC users to choose PS5 it is a bitter-sweet moment for PC gamers.

Christopher1d ago

I mean, it's a business based on hardware market. Do we expect them to not even try? It's not like Nintendo doesn't do the same by not putting any games on PC and Microsoft until recently did the same. I don't care what they attempt, as long as they don't abuse the community or lie about their goals/requirements.

Will it work? Not likely. Should we care? No. Let them waste their time, it doesn't affect anything.

RaidenBlack23h ago

let them try ... at the end of the day, we get few extra PC games ... yay ... and also promotes game preservation via PC ... so double yay.

LordoftheCritics6h ago

If only Playstation games provided the ease of pc gaming features.

Primary being very few PS games support m/kb.

Fishy Fingers22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

I wish them the best of luck.

But PC players are often a patient bunch, many will even wait for Epic launcher exclusivity to end until a game comes to Steam.

If they didnt buy the console when its games were exclusive, why would they do it now theyre not?

MrNinosan8h ago

Way more do than you probably think.

ravens528h ago

All you need is that one game that'll make a few switch at a time. Like a game a PC player REALLY wants.

outsider16244h ago

I mean if there's 10 million pc gamers out there...getting atleast just 1 million from there is probably a good thing..right?

romulus232h ago

PC players are not a monolith, I don't know why people keep thinking they speak for the entirety of all PC gamers like they all know each other personally. You think out of the millions of PC gamers not one single person will be impatient?Well Sony is willing to bet there will be. Why would they do it now? People's feelings change and new PC gamers come along all the time that may also feel different about waiting, that's why.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 2h ago
-Foxtrot22h ago

PC gamers are just too patient and loyal to their gaming set ups, something they've spent a lot of money on to perfect. They have backlogs of games which many never get round to finishing or get round to at all and will always have other multiplatform releases to keep them going.

Over the many years Sony has published so many awesome titles such as The Last of Us, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Infamous, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Dreams, Puppeteer, Resistance, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo, Motor Storm, God of War, Horizon, Ratchet and Clank, Spiderman, Ghost of Tsushima, Bloodborne

If none of those games BEFORE all these PC ports convinced a hardcore PC gamer to get a PS5 console then why on Earth would porting them them to PC now make any difference? All PC gamers now know 100% is that they just have to be patient, which they are good at anyway to get a PS5 game 2 years later.

I get GaaS games or multiplayer focused titles but if people really want to play these games they'd have gotten a PS console years ago.

Crows905h ago

Not sure they're aiming to convince the hardcore PC gamer.

Not sure why people are obsessing over his comment...it seems pretty simple to me.

He will do all he can to entice gamers to move to his ecosystem. As you say....exclusives existing hasn't moved many gamers over. But if they get to try them and love the games then they might change their mind about waiting 2 years.

We're in an echo chamber on this site...I've Personally seen people with Xbox and PC setups but no PlayStation. I've also seen people with small PC setups but no console. Not every pc gamer invests thousands and many may decide to put one in the living room.

They're not looking to convince all of players to buy a PlayStation...just a few...and really it is just a PR statement after all...they have to give a reason why single player won't release day 1....not to mention they also have to ensure current PlayStation gamers don't jump ship to PC. It goes both ways and they're ignoring the big L by putting any of their games off their platform.

anast4h ago

"Not sure they're aiming to convince the hardcore PC gamer."

Right here

Kakashi Hatake5h ago

PC gamers think tomorrow is promised. Sorry, don't have time for that.

Michiel19893h ago

it's not just about loyalty or sunk cost, pc is an open platform while consoles are closed platforms. If you for example want to mod, you will play on pc, no question about it. Also if you like indie games, steam is a fucking goldmine for that. I've been playing a lot of indie games over the last years and there just seems to be an endless amount of them on steam. Also not having games locked to a certain fps is a prettty big deal for me and I assume a lot of other pc players.

Walalon2h ago

And don't forget steam sales, you can get a ton of games on an awesome price.

romulus232h ago

And how do you know out of the millions of PC gamers that not one single person ever went ahead and bought a PlayStation console for one or more of those games? People keep speaking for the entirety of millions of PC gamers like they know them all personally. Here's one example for you, I'm currently typing on a recently purchased PC that cost me over twenty five hundred dollars and is more than capable of running any game including Sony exclusives that come to PC and yet I still bought a PS5 so apparently I'm not patient or loyal enough to my set up, hope it's not mad at me for not being loyal.

Who cares? Then just stay on PC and play the waiting game. No big deal. Sony wins in the end anyway.

Number1TailzFan22h ago

I mean if there's any single player Sony games that I actually want that aren't on PC then I would buy said console to play them on. But the ones that I like that aren't on PC are few and far between anyway so no loss for me.

If I game, it's usually multiplayer titles, otherwise I like playing around with some other software.

PlayStation Aims to Entice PC Gamers to Play Single-Player Sequels on Consoles

Sony aims to release live service PlayStation games day & date on PC and PS5, but single-player games will have more "strategic approach."

-Foxtrot2d ago

How? I’m sorry but how when they literally port their games to the PC now after not even 2 years, it’s rumored GoW Ragnarok is next.

The best thing they could have done is focus on the generation before with PS3 / PS4 titles and when it got to the PS6 then start porting PS5 games so people will want to get the sequel on the new console

Now PC gamers just wait it out because they know it’s coming

Redemption-642d ago

Rock Star does the same thing. Release 1st on consoles, wait a year or two then release on PC. It's clearly a strategy that works for them.

They don't need a lot of PC gamers to move to Playstation, but they just need a few who would also buy into it and possibly double dip. There are some very unhappy gamers on Twitter, who wanted to hear day and date for all games.

Cacabunga2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Fox
Your analyse is not accurate..

If sony keeps things the way they are then they will grow the business. Some pc gamers who really liked God of War for example might buy PS4 or 5 to play Ragnarok. Same if they announce ghost of tsushima 2 or a new Ratchet game.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Rockstar?

Yeah I loved playing Red Dead Redemption on PC…….

@Cacabunga

I highly doubt it, PC gamers have their setups, if they didn’t budge for years to get a console despite all the cool exclusives then they aren’t going to budge now knowing a new PS5 game will get a port 2 years later

Crows901d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

@cacbunga

Basically you're functioning under the assumption that PC players are impatient, rich and stupid.

Most will not budge. But if the hype is real enough they'll get a few. But those few won't actually be invested in the platform.

shinoff21831d 13h ago

Those unhappy gamers will just have to suck it up. I'm sure Sony sees how thats worked out for Xbox. Why tf would they follow in their footsteps

How?

According to Sony, by co launching live service games like Helldivers2 day one, then enticing PC players to want to play sequels on the console for SP games.

That's how. If you play Ghost of Tsushima and Sony launches GoT 2 on PS later this year, you're more apt to want to grab the console and play the sequel instead of waiting.

2d ago
ThinkThink2d ago

Yeah, pc players are the most patient of players. They will just wait for the game to come to pc.

Tacoboto2d ago

You're just spitting back out the Sony PR line.

PC-first and PC-centric gaming is a different beast. Helldivers 2's popularity and GoT's popularity are because they're good solid games, not because they're from PlayStation publishing.

It's the same PlayStation that put Helldivers 2 for sale internationally, then pulled their PSN-Steam removal card. The same PlayStation that released Returnal with UE4's dreaded shader stutter. The same PlayStation that released TLOU Part 1 in a broken state.

If Sony's PS4 slate of titles didn't convince PC gamers, if their current PS5 titles still don't, ports of games they've had *years* of knowing and reading and hearing about aren't going to convince them to finally buy a console.

Don't fall so easily for the same PR BS that fabricates quotes from their own studio heads.

VincentVanBro2d ago

Nah I’ll wait for the best version on PC lol

JEECE2d ago

I mean that's certainly the thinking, but for most PC gamers that just won't work. Like in a rare circumstance if someone was already on the fence about a console that might get them to take the plunge and buy a PlayStation, but it will be the exception rather than the rule.

-Foxtrot1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

PC gamers are super patient

There's no f****** way, for example, they are going to get a PS5 the moment Ghost of Tsushima 2 is announced just because they played the PC port of the first game

The mindset?

"Ah cool GoT2 has been announced, really enjoyed the first game. Anyway I'll just play on the dozens of other games I have while I wait for the obvious PC port from Sony in like 2 years"

Not a chance they'll all wait now.

thorstein1d 21h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago )

@tacoboto

"You're just spitting back the Sony PR line."

I literally said: "According to Sony."

I was responding to someone who asked "How?"

I gave Fox an answer that reflects Sony's thinking. Maybe read the OP's comment and then reading a reply to that person as if it's an answer to their question instead of sounding off in such a bizarre way. See Jeece's reply to mine.

@Dom I do. Sony may not, but then again, they've made billions in the gaming industry and you've made $0.

INMATEofARKHAM1d 15h ago

@thorstein PC gamers have been condition to wait... Epic Games exclusives don't sell well and EA, Ubisoft, and MS have all come back/or arrived on Steam and that's all for preferred store front that doesn't cost money at all so to think people will rush out to spend 500 dollars on a console (whichvcould be used to help pay for PC upgrades) is a bit naive.

shinoff21831d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

I think some of yall are giving pc gamers to much credit. Not every pc gamer is gonna be the same. I'm sure sony isnt expecting all pc gamers to switch, that would be foolish. Idk how many pc goers are there. 500 million 400 million idk really. Say son bgets 5 million of them to it was worth it. If you say none imma call bs

You're mistakenly speaking for all PC gamers, there are bound to be some people who are not willing to wait and for Sony those are potential console buyers.

RaidenBlack1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 22h ago )

eh, no ... if a PC gamer is playing on a PC, they'll continue to do so ... there are tons n tons of games on Steam alone and the steam gamers' backlog stories are one of the most discussed topic you'll find in PC forums ... indie is already huge there, plus early access, PC-exclusive titles, VR, big publishers' titles and now Sony's ports too.
Realistically speaking, usually there's not enough time to complete the backlog alone, than go buy a separate console altogether.
The only game that has the power somewhat to make a PC gamer to get a console is GTA VI.
PC gaming existed and proliferated well before this recent Sony's PC decision.

StormSnooper1d 21h ago

@romulus23
True, there will be new gamers who will be exposed to PlayStation IPs, and they will possibly obtain PSN accounts, both of which make people more inclined to purchase PlayStation.

VincentVanBro1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

I don’t think you understand PC gaming. We have sooooo many games to play it’s kind of ludicrous. The insane Steam backlog is not a myth. So, we’ll happily wait for the best version of a game.

outsider16241d 14h ago (Edited 1d 14h ago )

How these guys think that they're only pc gamers that won't buy a console, I'll never know..lol. we're talking about the whole world here..not a few guys on this site or reddit.

Edit: in fact there's posts on reddit how they bought a ps5 after having played a few exclusives on PC.

"Not a chance they'll all wait now."

You don't know what all of them will do. Some may wait some may not.

StormSnooper1d 21h ago

Well, if they want the games when they release, they will need a PlayStation. If they are ok with waiting, then they can do that. I think it’s a sound gameplan for PlayStation. The release of games on PC, will generate additional fans for the ips.

kaos891d 16h ago

So who cares how / when someone chooses to spend or not spend their money? Sony gets their money for their game sold either way whether its on PS5 or PC, so in the end what does it matter?

Resistance_lord1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

PC gamers will wait a year to get a game $10 cheaper lol. they ain't gonna go out and spend $500 on a system to play 1 game. people underestimate them big time.

outsider16241d 14h ago (Edited 1d 14h ago )

@Fox
It actually works, i know some of my friends and cousins who cannot wait and bought a Ps5 to play Horizon FW. In fact they cannot believe that "ps has amazing games" lol

Sure there's others who can wait a whole year or two but then there's others who have to play as soon as possible.

Christopher1d 14h ago

*** Now PC gamers just wait it out because they know it’s coming ***

I think a lot of people who would abandon consoles entirely don't because of the wait. Sure, they aren't drawing new users from PC like they want, but they are maintaining while getting more from PC-only gamers (possibly even double taps from those who own both).

Einhander19721d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

The PS5 Pro is going to be WAY above the average PC of users on Steam.

The PS5 Pro will be able to play every single game they have released on PC at PC settings with a minimum of 60FPS and higher with unlocked framerates.

Jingsing1d 6h ago

I agree, there is zero logic from Sony on this. Sony completely underestimate how stubborn a PC player is. They can wait, I'll now wait as I've stopped buying games for my PS5 and will now acquire them for free on PC.

"While Helldivers 2 was released day and date on both PS5 and PC, don’t expect single-player narrative-driven games to be released in the same boat by Sony anytime soon. - This was confirmed by PlayStation’s soon-to-be co-CEO Hermen Hulst in Sony’s business segment presentation"

There you have it. Won't be 'day and date' single player games on PC anytime soon or for the forseeable future. They understand single player games are Playstation's backbone.

CrashMania2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

So much for the nonsense narrative that playstation is somehow failing so they are going to immediately start releasing every single game day and date on PC lol.

Elda2d ago

That is what the competition has to deal with.

2d ago
Elda2d ago

Agreed. First & foremost Playstation not only wants to sell their AAA first party games but their gaming consoles to play them on that is why their AAA first party games come to PC later after it sells on PS consoles.

ocelot072d ago

I was told that Playstation was doing so bad on here and on X that Helldivers 2 was going to release on Xbox and Sony was going to start releasing all games on pc day and date with playstation. Why do people constantly lie on the internet!!!!!

We've gone from you'll never see PS games on PC, to you'll never see any PS games day one on PC, to you'll see some PS games day one but have to wait for others.

I mean, its kinda looks like it's heading one way no? That "wait" is going to get shorter and shorter.

Fishy Fingers2d ago

It's happening.

God of War 2018 - 4 years
Horizon Zero dawn - 3 years
Horizon Forbidden West - 2 years

StormSnooper1d 21h ago

Well, with MS going full PC/multiplatform, PlayStation will need to adapt. Luckily, they are in a position to hold the fort for all lovers of console gaming. Otherwise, if MS’s business model was the norm, we can all kiss console gaming goodbye.

Thank god for Sony.

HankHill1d 19h ago

Exactly. As usual, the usual suspects on here are coping and moving goal posts.

darthv721d 17h ago

Ragnarok is now 1y and 10m between PS-PC release. Its only going to get shorter over time.

outsider16241d 14h ago

Well, change of leaderships on Sony did that, under Jim it looked like a lot has changed. Who would have thought eh?
Who would have thought under Big ole Phil xbox games would come to Playstation eh?

That's a smart move because at the end of the day playstation is a hardware business and need to sell hardware folks

Software_Lover2d ago

Meh, I'm done with consoles altogether.

Bathyj2d ago

Considering the amount of bangers PlayStation and Nintendo make, your name doesn't sound very apt.

darthv722d ago

Well I think he means that on PC, all software eventually is playable on it. Which is true.

Consoles just are a convenient way of playing some sooner than later.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago

Darth, all software eventually is playable on PC through emulation and theft of games. You forgot that part. It's not through legal means.

andy852d ago

Most, not all. Unless you're talking emulation

Mad_Matt2d ago

Apocalypse- You consider emulation theft of games? LMAO
Way to shill for corporations.

Software_Lover1d 21h ago

This gen has been trash. I was already on the fence but caved and bought the consoles, I have regretted that decision. Most of the games that I would play come to PC anyway. I'm done with consoles. I have had the best time with PC this gen and a good amount last gen that it just pulled me away.

XiNatsuDragnel1d 21h ago

@Shadow
Emulators and emulation are legal not rooms you're inaccurate
