Mods and 4K Coming to PlayStation 4 for Skyrim and Fallout 4

Bethesda:

We’re excited to announce that mod support is coming to PlayStation 4 for both Skyrim Special Edition and Fallout 4. Additionally, we’ll also be supporting the new PlayStation 4 Pro with both titles.

Skyrim will have these features when it launches on October 28. The new power of the PlayStation 4 Pro has allowed us to make Skyrim render in native 4k, and it looks better than ever. Here are some screens to show you just how great it looks.

This is really awesome news that both parties were able to work something out for the benefit of gamers

i guess there goes the theory that sony won't allow mods now we will get mods which will even looks better on ps4 pro. ps4 becomes the best place on consoles to play fallout 4 and skyrim(in native 4k)

After the work is complete on Skyrim, we’ll be updating Fallout 4 for both mods and PS4 Pro. We expect Fallout 4 to take advantage of the PS4 Pro in 4k along with enhanced lighting and graphics features

am i the only one who wanted fallout 3/new vegas HD remaster(on a new engine with mod support)

off topic:
so now tell me how many are willing to wait for scorpio which comes a year later

this is what i have been saying something coming in 13-14 months won't affect ps4 pro coming in one month. ps4 will be the most powerful console on the market

games that are either confirmed or hopefully get ps4 pro support to improve the experience

fallout 4
skyrim
uncharted 4
drive club
gta 5
the last guardian
mafia 3
dues ex
witcher 3
bloodborne
call of duty
bf1
TF2
mass effect

so you mean to tell me gamers much rather wait to play games at better res/fps than play them in 2016

and if anyone thinks scorpio will do native 4k with 6tf than they really don't understand tech that much. most high end pc's can't even handle 4k at 30 fps

ps4 pro and scorpio will be more similar than people like to think

dennigo

that's what is great about ps4 pro, you don't have to buy one. if i had a ps4 than i wouldn't upgrade till ps5 but i left the country in 2015 so sold my ps4 and came back to find out ps4 pro is coming so might as well wait. but even regular ps4's are getting free HDR update which is awesome(if you have the TV, which at the moment i don't lol)

deafdani

i said consoles only. nothing can compete with pc for sure

mark_parch

i hope they do. cd project red are gamer driven company so i hope they do support ps4 pro and xbox scorpio

Liqu1d

nothing can compete with pc gaming simple as that. the amount of freedom is insane

dennigo2797d ago

if you do not own a 4k tv then both consoles are a waste of money, i'm a true playstation fan i have owned everything they've made on day one, but ps4 pro ... no i'll skip that, i'll wait for ps5 pay 400 euros for a slight upgrade which won't be supported by a lot of current games. i see absolutely no point in ps4 pro, they should have just waited 2 years and brought out ps5.

I will be enjoying ps vr on october 13th, i'm a believer.

deafdani2797d ago

Except mod support will be very restricted on PS4. Sony won't allow the use of external assets, only mods made with already existing in-game assets.

Xbox One and PC, on the other hand, have access to mods unrestricted.

Still, restricted mods are better than no mods at all, I guess... but this isn't anywhere close to what you can do on Xbox One, let alone PC.

Now bring on the disagrees from people who don't want to inform themselves properly...

mark_parch2797d ago

i thought projekt red said they weren't making any improvements to witcher 3

phantomexe2797d ago

I kind of agree with dennigo here i'm not going drop 400 bucks on a new PlayStation unless i need too. You figure sony comes out with pro next year ms drops there consule then 2018 ps5. I'll wait on the ps5.

Liqu1d2797d ago

@deafdani PC is the only platform with completely unrestricted modding.

VoodooProject2796d ago

Half those games you listed are old.

Bahamut2796d ago (Edited 2796d ago )

@dennigo

"if you do not own a 4k tv then both consoles are a waste of money"

You think the drastic increase in graphical horsepower only applies to resolution? I don't own a 4k TV, but I'm excited to get my PS4 pro for faster loading times and better framerates. I'm a PC gamer at heart, but I love the convenience of consoles, so a PS4 is a perfect blend, adding those silky smooth framerates and graphical upgrades to the console world. Quit spreading false information, PS4 Pro isn't only for 4k, it's just one of the features.

kudos to bethesda for giving us mods!

NohansenBoy2796d ago

Through glorified game edits. Way to treat your consumers Sony!

Harmy6662796d ago (Edited 2796d ago )

Basically, PS4 Pro users will be able to put dirt where there was once water.

They are not allowing external assets into the game, like the PC and XBONE editions are.

I guess this is a happy medium, so PS4 Pro users get something...

Genuine-User2797d ago (Edited 2797d ago )

Well there you have you have it folks, Sony does allow mods on the PS4.

Skyrim Remastered at native 4K? Nice!

Abriael2797d ago

As long as no custom assets are used. Bit of a bummer, honestly, but much better than nothing.

Genuine-User2797d ago

I was told the custom assets were an issue on Bethesda end?

Abriael2797d ago

Whichever end it is, that's what caused the problem according to Pete Hines. It's a bit of a bummer because a lot of the best mods use them.

But some mods is certainly better than no mods.

Hell yeah, People saying the Scorpio can't do native 4k... WHAT!? The pro can soooooo?

Forum_Pirate2797d ago

It doesn't take much to run 6 year old games designed to run on the 360 in native 4k. That's not the same as a modern AAA release.

And lets be real, Fallout 4 is more or less the same story. It probably couldn't run on a 360, but it's hardly up to the level of visual quality of other AAA games, even open world AAA games.

Also, whoever said it can't would be dumb. I'm saying 4k/30 will actually look less good than 1080 or 1440p with all the graphical effects turned up so doing native 4k is a waste of the power, and what most people I've seen are saying is that it can't do 4k/60 (again, for modern AAA titles) like some ignorant people are claiming it will.

Ju2796d ago (Edited 2796d ago )

BS. There is no reason a 1080p with 2xMSAA can't run 4K native without on the Pro. No matter how old the game is. In fact this gives you an automatic cleaner picture than the 2xMSAA at 1080p. And of course this will be true for the Scorpio as well. But why wait another year?

krembo182797d ago (Edited 2797d ago )

Win Win situation , Bethesda & Sony enable mods on PS4 before skyrim launch, since without it skyrim sales will be much lower, and most of the sales are pre-orders / during christmas

cleft52797d ago

It is a great situation and this is yet another game that is running in native 4k on Playstation Pro, something that people didnt think was possible. So great news all around.

InTheZoneAC2796d ago

almost every older game should run native 4k, no one's arguing that. What people don't understand is that these new graphic/animation/ai heavy games will not be able to handle 4k 60fps.

krypt19832797d ago

Half baked mods what's the point ? Wow lol ...

Abriael2797d ago

There certainly is a point. There certainly are lots of things you can do by using the original assets. You can make whole new questlines and such, for instance.

It's not an optimal solution for sure, but if that's all they can implement, it's certainly better than no mods at all.

TankCrossing2796d ago

I'm outraged. If you can't replace all the dragons for Thomas the Tank Engine models then you might as well not bother with mods at all.

DragonKnight2796d ago

I am rather upset that I won't have Macho Man Dragons, a Doomtrain spell, or a Tommy Wiseau mount, but then again, having Unrelenting Force's power boosted to send NPCs clear out of the cell is tempting.

ziggurcat2796d ago

@dragon:

"I am rather upset that I won't have... a Tommy Wiseau mount"

does it tear you apart, Lisa?

_-EDMIX-_2797d ago

I rarely used mods for graphical things, most mods I used were for features.

I used open city mod for no loading in towns, I used mods to add more children and elderly to make the game more realistic etc.

TheHorseTamer2797d ago

" I used mods to add more children and elderly to make the game more realistic etc"

Unfortunately, these kinds of mods, placing NPC, costmetic, are external mods by third party and will not be on the PS4 version. It is readily available for Xbox gamers so it is a shame that there is no external mods support for PS4 gamers that want them.

xPhearR3dx2797d ago

@TheHorseTamer

You're completely wrong about that. Creating new NPCs using in-game assets will work fine. As long as you don't import and sounds, textures, animations or models. You can do whatever you want in the Creation Kit and it will work on PS4. That includes making new scripts.

I could add an entire new town with 100 NPCs on PS4, and it will work. They just won't have any voiced dialog nor will they wear anything other than the clothing/armor that's already in the game.

Adding things like a minigun that shoots rockets will work on PS4, but something like Modern Firearms that adds tons of new guns and stuff won't work. Modders can do a lot of cool stuff with just the in-game assets, but it's not going to be anything close to what Xbox or PC offers. Hopefully it can be added down the line and this isn't it for mods.

InTheZoneAC2796d ago

if there's a mod for letting us kill the people of towns, children included, then I could see a use for mods...

ColonelHugh2796d ago

@InTheZoneAC

Uh, that's like the easiest thing to do. You just flip the essential flag to nonessential. Should be one of the first mods on every platform, but you might want to wait to make sure an experienced mod author makes sure certain NPCs remain essential for important quests.

How nice of them to give us more control over graphical settings as a way to *completely* avoid taking accountability for the broken Xbox settings.

bondsmx19d ago

Well, I still crashed like 5 times last night within two hours. So there’s that.

anast18d ago

I had to stop. The game is not good. I'd rather play Skyrim and that game isn't that good either.

I Think It's About Time We Realize Fallout 4 Wasn't That Bad

Ahmed from eXputer: "2015's Fallout 4 received harsh criticism upon launching, but I think it was unwarranted and the game deserves more praise than it got."

helicoptergirl24d ago

It was totally that bad. I couldn't finish the campaign it was so bland and boring as I recall. Got so sick of it. 1000 stimpaks on hard. It is very rare that I play half a game and then just quit. I usually always finish it. But i was so bored with this game I just stopped and never went back and never regretted it. Just thinking about that game makes me shudder

Furesis24d ago

That's exactly what happened to me too lmao
Fallout 4 is not a fallout game period it's a bethesda game

Vits24d ago

The comparison with Skyrim is mind-boggling. Yes, Skyrim has streamlined many of the systems that Morrowind introduced. However, it did not tamper with the core of the Elder Scrolls franchise; it did not diminish the freedom and sense of exploration that made Bethesda RPGs famous. Fallout 4, on the other hand, did exactly that to the Fallout series. It eliminated what made Fallout such a beloved series to play. There are no consequences for your choices, no reason to explore, and barely any interesting set pieces in the game.

It's not terrible, but it's a painfully mediocre game in a franchise that typically doesn't produce such mediocrity. So that is why people see it as bad, the bar is just much higher.

anast24d ago

They both feel the same because they are, it's just that one has swords and magic and the other has swords and guns.

anast24d ago

I'm replaying it now. It sucks. I'm about 30 hours in and thinking about quitting again. I am so tired of the dialogue I just spam a random button because it doesn't matter. The upgrade just feels like a graphical mod, everything else is not good.

Good-Smurf24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

I couldn't play the game as-is it was insanely boring and grindy and the grind itself are not fun at all.
Mods helped me stomach the game a bit better but after a while I just stopped playing and uninstalled it because the game did nothing after the first few hours to give me any motivation to keep playing it, it just became a mindless looter shooter with obsession in settlement building and defending.
Compared to F3 and FNV, F4 was barely a mediocre game it wasn't bad but it's also very forgettable entry.

MrDead24d ago

It's not that bad after 300+ mods that fix it's issues and make the game fun... but lets not talk about mods right now as they are f****d.
