The ps2 only went to £129 just before the ps3 came out. Remember sony showing europe love by releasing it 6months after it came out in america.

If it took that long for the ps2 to get close to £100 it would be a bold and very smart move for ms to drop the 360 price to £100 now but they wont.

They will do what american (i know sony is japanese but they do this as well) companies do and simply change the $ to £ so if there is a price cut here it'll be to £199 not £100.

I am certainly not enough of a fanboy to say that the Xbox 360 has no good games; The Xbox 360 has some great games, for sure, but when put next to the Playstation 2's back catalogue, The Xbox 360 is like a midget trying to beat Mr. Olympia in a weight-lifting contest, no contest at all.

Not only that, but will almost all of the PS2's AAA titles now on the discount rack as Greatest Hits, ANYONE can experience the awesome gaming Euphoria that the PS2 offers.

The PS2 still offers that advantage over the XBOX 360 that the 360 cannot match yet (at least for the next few years).

Only Sony Computer Entertainment can shutdown the PS2 by not releasing any new software. The demographic buying a PS2 doesn't play the same kind of games as a 360 gamer. The person buying PS2 is getting it for rockband, guitar hero, madden, singstar etc, so they will not buy a 360 just for those games. 360 going down to $200 will only hurt one system and that is the PS3 and somewhat maybe the Wii.

the thing is, most people who buy those types of game aren't hardcore gamers. they aren't the type to care about graphics, high-def and hdds. they care about value, which they will still find more of in the PS2 than the 360 (especially since there's nothing stopping Sony from dropping the PS2's price to sub-$100).

1) The 360 has never enjoyed a period of sales "dominance". Before the Wii it was dominated in sales by the PS2 and now its consistently dominated by both the Wii and the PS3.

2) Its the Wii and PS3 that diminished PS2 sales (apart from the fact that nearly everyone already had one) not the 360. It's after the Wii and PS3 were released that PS2 sales really started to fall off quickly.

3) This year the 360 only outsold the PS2 by 10%. OTOH the PS3 outsold the PS2 by almost 50%!

4) The "Arcade" model isn't even a gaming machine out of the box. You have to pay an additional $100 to buy the hard-drive, and if you wanted to play online, pay and additional $50/yr for each year you plan on using the Xbox360 online.

It's the ultimate in hidden cost pricing pricing that borders on bait-and-switch. They lure the customer with a $199 price tag and surprise them with hundreds in additional cost. The Wii is $249. Thats it. No surprises. All features included. Same goes for PS3. No dirty tricks on unsuspecting target and walmart shoppers who will do the bulk of console buying.

Get6 the $499 80GB PS3. It has software emulation but it works very well and reportedly plays about 85% of the PS2 titles. I know for a fact that it plays both God of War I and God of War II because I have both of them. I can also verify that it plays RE:4, VF4:Evo, and MDK2. If it plays MDK2 it all but the most obscure titles. MDK2 was a PS2 release title I believe. It looks like a bad PS1 game. Seriously, it is much worse than Metal Gear Solid, which was also on the PS1.

You take Maden it probably rates around 5 to 7 as an avg review score, and yet everyone complains how it has nothing new to offer yet still out sells halo in terms of overall sales easy and as a series over the years blows it away in terms of total year over year sales for what 20 years.

Even Halo has a pretty marginal avg review score but because it was pre-sold at 7-11's and mcdonald's it ended up having high pre-order sales.

doesn't hurt the console as much as having a cheap 360 with no HDD making it the reasons some games cant utilise it for the 360's that do.

Get off the PS3. It's quality is shining through and that scares you 360 fanboys. If the 360 had the same reliability and quality, I would have one now... but people that work hard for what they have spend it wisely and all these failed 360's make it look cheap and scare people from buying it. No one wants to get home with a great game and have it lock up in the middle of it. No one wants a huge freaking heat generating power brick to have to deal with. When Sony retire the PS2 it'll not be from a finishing blow of a competitor, but because the old warhorse has proved itself over many campaigns, and the PS3 will be ready to succeed it.

360 was built with PS2 in MS's mind. The market penetration of PS2 made MS lose control. they got too excited. It drove them crazy hence the mess with 360 - being outsold by ps3 let alone Wii.

PS3 however is still priced at a premium and strong in its own respect. Games dont primarily sell consoles - 360 has lots of games whereas the Wii ...........(fill in the blank)

Some people are pretty stupid. if a three year old console which has more games coming out for it is cheaper than an eight year old console which people are only still buying because the old ones broke or they cannot afford a newer console will say look that one costs less lets get that one.

the ps2 will continue to sell well as long as it is on the market. No console will perform any finishing blow to it. The ps2 dominated the console market. Its game catalog is ridiculous. When sony decides to retire the ps2, it will be on its own terms, still selling well, and in demand. It will leave the console market as a legend. The wii will never get to the ps2 numbers because it has a weak games catalog, most serious gamers are not interested and as the real console prices go down, it will only hurt the wii sales. The wii will lose its "cheap" selling point.

360 Arcade $199.99, want a hard drive? Add another $59.99 for used 20 gig, $99.99 for a new one or $179.99 for a 120 gig. Need a wireless adapter, add another $99.99 and if you want a hdmi cable add whatever cost to that as well. If M$ wants too compete with the PS2 then go ahead because the 360 will never have a game library as extensive as the PlayStation brand sorry.

Well, if this is the "Nail in the Coffin" for the PS2, it has certainly been one of the most glorious rides in all of gaming, to be quite honest.

Coming up on its 9th year and still going strong. You really can't say that about very many electronic products that haven't changed since its inception, let alone a video game console.

And for those that are constantly hating on the 360. Seriously, what is your beef?? Have some of you here even played the games on the system??

Are you going to tell me that Halo, Gears of War, even Viva Pinata are not great gaming experiences?? Because if you are, there is a bridge in Brooklyn that is for sale.

Does it have flaws?? Yes, it does.

...The 360 had dominance in the USA, so a price shift here may only have marginal results; in the UK it might make a difference, but If I'm not mistaken, Microsoft as a corporation did some things that made their name stink. But really, all everyone wants is cheap stuff, so this might do something... I know if the PS3 was $199 this year, I'd get another one.

If you look at the last year sales, then the PS3 is ahead, and XB360 and PS2 is about par. If the PS2 drops another bit, then it will again get some traction in the bottom end. The PS2 must cost ver little to make now. Sony can nearly release it as a portable - like the portable DVD players. I will get one if they do - and it could give it another 5 years of life. Imagine - a portable PS2 / DVD player with thousands of dirt cheap high quality game library. It would be awesome.

At $199...the core Xbox 360 is pretty much worthless...you really need a harddrive...so its gonna cost you an addtional $100 for the 60 GB harddrive...so you are back at $299...

All sony has do to is lower the price of the PS2 to $99....and lower the price of the PS3 to $349...and lower the price of the PSP-3000 (new upcomming model) to $129.99...and its all over...

The wii is in a league by itself..

Very interesting price, indeed. How does that work with live ? Do I need a HDD for that ? (I have no real need for online play on the 360, just curious). And, do I need a separate Live account for each user on the machine? (like I have 4 accounts on the PS3 right now).
I just hope M$ doesn't screw me over if I buy that now just to find out, future games require a HDD. AC6 is fine, right ?

I got a disagree but not answer. I am serious. I don't need a sophisticated 360 (like with HDD and online and all that, I have a PS3 for that). But for $199 it should be in my price range. So, back to my original questions. Can I still use Live with the arcade ? And if I have 4 accounts do I need to pay extra for each ? Do I miss out on anything without a HDD ? (Burnout Paradise, but again, not an issue, have that already).

We all know that ps2 was a crowning achievement in Sony's portfolio. A milestone that grew into a wall that shut the competition out. Xbox had trouble just maintaining it's number 2 spot, and that spot was miles below number 1, which was ps2.

Neither ps3 nor 360 is going to reach those astronomical numbers. Sony had a great game plan then, something that they just aren't going to do this gen. And MS's 360 needs to hit a critical mass in Japan (which I believe they're working on) for it to be a "worldwide" success, like ps2/ps1 were.

The playing field has changed. It has evolved. Online is where the battle will take place, with PSN gaining on the respect that Xbox Live! has had now for a good while. But just as Sony begins to catch up, MS unleashes the new dashboard update. But what does this all mean to us gamers? These companies are toe-to-toe. Sony has balls. MS has balls. They're taking to the ring like REAL contenders. Some of the best innovations of this gen haven't even come out yet! They haven't even been put on the board yet!

But we're going to see them soon. Both companies are going to be pulling out all the stops! Great time to be a gamer.

but you need a good game selection as well that will appeal to a broad range of gamers. When the PS2 dropped its price to 199 it had the biggest varied quality selection of games for a broad range of gamers.

We already seen in Europe that the x360 at 199 Europe is not flying off the shelves. The x360 problem is not mainly due to the price. Its already much cheaper than its direct competitor but its still being outsold. The problem with the x360 is value.

AS for weather it will kill the PS2. It won't because people are buying the PS2 because its cheap and it has the biggest game selection in history of console gaming.

If Sony gives the people software backwards compatibility through a firmware update, I think the Xbox's lower price cut would seem a little less appealing, especially if Sony uses their damned brains and advertises it as a standout feature, simply because it was just released. Why not put in a relevant feature, then advertise that you just put it in, to attract the crowd that cares about backward compatibility as well as the crowd that do not, due to a well designed, small marketing strategy that is structured to garner those people.

They should cut out and emphasize only the KEY capabilities of the system. GAMES among all else

Personally if they get the chance, I would re-release the PS3 in a new slim model, 80-120g hard drive (STANDARD) with everything the PS3 60gig had but with all the minimizations and cooling improvements-entire.

This could be embaressing for MS. If Sony release a new SKU for PS2, smaller, cheaper, then the venerable console could last another 3-4 years easily. If they transform it into a portable DVD player combination, then another 5 years lifespan. Heck - it could bury two XB consoles before it stops being a viable. And the way it is going now - with new titles still being released - it could just do exactly that.

PS3 gets a price cut, whether ot not care to admit it, an 80gig ps3 at only $399 IS a price cut. And a rather huge one compared to the $599 price tag it got when it was released not even two years ago. I gotta hand it to Sony trying to get the PS3 at a good price to the customers, even if they are taking a loss on every ps3 sold.

The 360 in sept will have been on the market for THREE years, and with only one measly price cut of $50, IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME THEY CUT THE PRICE!!!

So in sept, both consoles get price cuts... one will have alot of VALUE for $399, and one will have a sku and be at that "sweet spot" mass market price of $199... and with both consoles having a great line-up, i'll say it again.... it's going to be very interesting.

the one exeption being of course the elite. it's actually HIGHER priced than the ps3's top offering, @ $449 (best buy gets you a bundle with 2 games for the same price BTW). why MS doesn't drop the price on THAT one is a mystery but it IS 40gb more than the ps3 which makes since sorta. plus, it's their "renegade" model: it has a different image and target audience than their premium and arcade configs.

i was going to get a ps3 this year, but instead i'm retiring my 2year 360 premium to my cousin (he's really wanted one BAD) and upgrading to elite. he'll still have another year on the warranty so he's protected IF it ever rrods (never had that problem myself). maybe next year will bring a ps3 for me.

sony dropped back compatability from the ps3 after the inital launch group because gamers said it wasnt that big an issuewith ps2being a tank of a console. mines a realease one and still works, ive retired it due to memories tied up with it.

sony still has untapped markets for the ps2
its now so farinto the profit margin that they can afford to sell it at a low cost its now being marketed in latin america and other , smaller countrys as an good affordable first system.
while its past its prime in 1st world countrys i know little kids around the world who would love one for thier birthday.
