The gaming media has pretty decided to give Epic a free pass to continue to use absurdly fake marketing shots. I guess there needs to be at least one game to keep the illusion that the PS3 and 360 'are battling it out' in 2008.

@Beans, i almost laughed really hard when you said 360 is just starting to show its power. I have said it before and i am still yet to be proved wrong. Gears of War 1 was when the 360 peaked. Gears 2 will take it up another notch and so will gears 3. Slight incremental improvements at least until a new engine is built that runs better than UE3 on 360.

am i the only one that has become disenchanted with the Unreal Engine 3 already?

it's not because it's a bad engine, it isn't, it's just that almost EVERY SINGLE GAME released in the past 2 years has used the engine, and very few of them did anything to differentiate themselves from each other.

most of the games using Unreal Engine 3 have that "Unreal" look. i'm not talking about the big buff space marine schtick, that's Epic's specialty, just the feel and tone of the engine, the textures, etc, it's all just so damn familiar, which is why i really love when a developer builds their engine from scratch, because it tends to be unique.

i'm looking foward to games like Fable 2, Far Cry 2, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc, because those games use their own engines, and well, they certainly have a uniqueness to them.

this isn't to bash Gears 2, or the Unreal Engine 3, i'm just not as wowed by it like i was 2 years ago, when we first saw Gears of War running on an X Box 360.

it reminds me a lot of Unreal Tournament 3 also, and it looks great, don't get me wrong, i'm just a little "meh" about the engine.

since i'm not a Gears of War fan, i'm hoping maybe the sequel will improve upon the game enough to where i'll be interested in it. my only problem with the original Gears is that i just didn't CARE about it, you know? i just wasn't invested in the "story" or "characters."

i mean, "a rag tag bunch of badasses band together to fight an alien menace." cool enough, but it sounds like the premise of Predator. i guess at this point in my life, i'm interested in narrative in my games moreso than cliches or character stereotypes.

anyway, enough of my tangent. i'll be following Gears of War 2, as i'd like to see what Epic comes up with for the sequel to, to me at least, one of their biggest and best games. just because i'm not a fan, doesn't mean i can't appreciate what they did. the next generation of consoles NEEDED some justification for their existence back in 2006, and Gears of War provided just that.

there's a lot more stiff competition this time around, which i know Epic is aware of, so i expect them to really go all out with this sequel. in 2006, it's competition was weak PS3 launch titles and the Wii.

i'm not going to list them, but there are plenty of games, across the 360 and PS3, that could give Gears 2 a run for it's money. this a GOOD thing, by the way, as it just pushes devs to compete on QUALITY, not hardware sales numbers and statistics.

While these screenshots don't seem authentic at all, I gotta say I still love this game - it is one of the bright spots in the 360 catalogue for me.

And anyone out there saying that Gears1 had bad graphics is a fool. The textures and animations are the best in any online game out today. Of course, this is coming from someone who played the optimized pc version(PC = always superior)

That being said, it still does have some stiff competition on the PS3 end coming from Resistance 2 and Killzone 2. These titles have an advantage because they have 50gb of space to work with instead of 10gb from a dvd.

I just can't wait for Gears3, there is a strong possibility it will be a PS3 title because Epic only signed a 2 game deal w/ MS.

I dont know if any hav listened to the game informer podcast.. but during the podcast the guys previewing Gears 2 clearly say that all the screens in the mag look ingame.. they themselves werent sure wht they will see until they saw the game running and they were dumb struck.. "Nutso lvl" remember anyone.. and one actually went as far as to telling that the screen shots dont do justice to the game and the whole game looks and plays like an artist rendering. I hav no doubt that the screen is realtime. But yeah I would like to see a much high res one of the shot.

Looks touched up, regardless am I the only one not impressed by it. Im sure once the game drops it will be great, but I just cant see it looking twice as good as the first one. we have to stop all the fanboy BS and actually look at this screenshot. Clearly it has been touched up. If not then the image is still not clear because they kinda brighten some areas up so it looks better.
Think of it like what Killzone 2 does with the dark lighting.

In the end, we have seen gameplay footage of kilzone 2, and it looks as good as the screenshots shown by GOW2.

But the thing is that those screenshots are BS.
