These Fallout: New Vegas Screens Are Really Something

Bethesda has released some awesome looking screens for what's expected to be another great installment in the long running saga.

Looks identical to Fallout 3 graphically. I just hope it has fewer bugs, but I'm not holding my breath on that. Bethesda's engine sucks like that. Either way, I'm totally psyched for this game. Probably my #2 for the year, behind God of War 3.

Same for me. This is my second most anticipated game across all systems, behind GOWIII. I also hope to god that this game will run better than FO3, that would be so great.

I would have liked for it to change a lot more visually. The UI is a different colour but it looks like that's about all they bothered with.

I don't want them to change much. Forget a complete overhaul. Just do the faces. They look generic and generally unattractive. Always have. That's why there are always a slew of cosmetic mods out there for these kinds of games.

I cant wait for this game. I loved Fallout 3: GOTY... though i havent done all the quest since i shoot almost everyone except my dog meat cuz he's practically immortal and can kill me.

I hope it's bigger and better than Fallout 3: GOTY and not Fallout 3... since the GOTY edition had all those awesome DLCs with those awesome armors, guns, characters, quests, items, etc.

Who cares if it hasn't changed visually? I don't mind fallout 3 graphics personally. Graphics aren't everything. Fallout 3 had AWESOME gameplay and im looking forward to wat new vegas will offer. This is definitely in my gaming list for 2010.

I never played any other Fallout game except FALLOUT 3 and here is what I hated about the game

1/ Slow loading times.
2/ The game sometimes just paused and it stopped my Xbox 360 from working. Nothing that a simple restart wouldn't fix but still, that was an issue.
3/ The slide walks.
4/ The anti gravity, totally unrealistic jump.
5/ Every character had the same freakin' face especially female characters they are almost identical.
6/ The ending was extremely boring!!!!!!!!!!

BUT..... I loved that game and I am going to buy the PS3 version as I will defenitely get the DLC as well (I prefer PSN over XBL). Even though Fallout 3 was my first ever Fallout game, I got stuck to it so bad, I couldn't stop playing the game. There were TONS of activities and I mean TONS!!! There are still many places that I haven't visited and I am going to play the game again so I could play it even better and check out all the areas in DC.

I also loved the soundtrack! I hope they keep that THREE DOG radio channel in New Vegas. Btw, can anyone confirm if this is officially FALLOUT 4 or some kind of spin-off?

Bathesda knows that even with all it's flaws, people will buy this game and perhaps that is why they didn't work a lot on the graphics as they look almost identical to Fo3

1. only an issue on consoles, laptops with 5400 rpm hdd and desktop in poor condition(fragmented hdd, many background programs etc.). the levels loaded in 1 second on my desktop with 2 7200 RPM HDD's in RAID 1

2. agree, also an issue on PC(the game has stopped working error...), even with all the patches

the biggest annoyance were the amount of glitches and bugs, like the flickering textures, the glitchy physics, collision detection problems

another annoyance was the lack variety, it's always the same in the wasteland: sand, pile of rocks, sand, billboard, sand, pile of rocks, sand, gas station, sand, billboard, pile of rocks, sand, power station, pile of rocks,...

I really wish they would make a new Elder Scrolls instead. Oblivion is my favorite RPG of all time (well mabye next to FFX). The fact that you can go into every building and interact with every person makes the game's feel more alive than any other. Fallout is just too depressing . I don't want to put 100 hours into a game and never see a field of green grass, forest, or clear water. Plus there are far too many shooters out. Oblivion is something different it had magic, swords, and made me feel like I was back in old England or something. It was a place that i would visit if given the opportunity, but I would never want to be in Fallout's world not even for a minute.

But it's whatever, as long as I have GOW 3, GT5, UFC 10, and Red dead redemption I'll be set for this year.

@Ocelot525: I don't have a gaming PC as it can cost an arm and a leg to build one and then you need another one soon after as PC tech keeps improving every month or two. I love tech advancement but I have got a budget to take care of =) Problem is I have an arcade and that damn thing comes without a HDD aannndddd, the HDD are really really expensive. Another reason why I love my PS3 more =)

So what? Fallout 3 was a great game. All they need to do, is have more towns just like Oblivion, and Not have the game end like it did, if you didnt have the DLC.

If you take the same graphics and gameplay, and pour 2x more content on top of that, then that will make for a good game to me.

Let them build upon an already solid foundation, Look at the GTA's, Vice City and San Andreas where just reskinned GTA 3's. And Look how epic San Andreas turned out. GTA4 built a foundation for this Generation, and its only natural that GTA5 will just blow us away, the foundation is already there, they just need to build off that.

But the environment doesn't look all that fresh. This Nevada desert so far doesn't look too far removed from outlying DC. Looks like FO3's DC sprinkled with some desert grasses tbh.

You are completely wrong, or blind. Can you honestly, HONESTLY say that gta has not changed drastically since GTA to GTA 4? They went from 2d overhead, to 3d, to large scale, to MASSIVE, to one of the most realistic current gen games.

Bethesda did: Oblivion, same engine for fallout 3, and now New Vagas looks like the same stuff in a desert

I hope they improve the shooting to make it feel more realistic. In Fallout 3, it was hard to shoot without the cross-hair being enabled. VATs also made combat too easy but it was was too hard without it. I had to set challenges for myself in order to make the game challenging, such as winning such a fight without losing x amount of health. They need to change it so its easier to shoot without VATs and more challenging to shoot with VATs. If they achieve that balance, the gameplay will be a lot better. Anyway, I loved Fallout 3. It provided the player with great freedom, gameplay(overall) and quests. Obsidian are decent developers and I expect them to have a good shot at this. Roll on Fall 2010.

Aren't Obsidian the ones with that new engine forgot its name but I remember a demo being shown of some spartan looking soldier in 3rd person shooting stuff off of tables with an automatic handgun.

Obsidian talked about the Onyx engine and I think I read somewhere they they were going to use it for the Aliens rpg they were doing for Sega before it got canceled.

The most recent mention I've seen on the Onyx engine is October 2009 in a VG247 interview with Ryan Rucinski and Cris Avellone.

" There’ll be less of that in the future as we develop Onyx (Obsidian’s proprietary engine) and gameplay systems in the Onyx engine, though."

So I guess that Onyx is still something that Obsidian are working on or at least planning to do someday.

In the meantime they are using Unreal 3 for Alpha Protocol and Gamebryo for Fallout: New Vegas along with Bethesda's G.E.C.K. level editor.

On Topic: As much as I enjoyed Fallout 3, there should be SOME steps forward on graphics. the color is nice but paying 60 bones for a big expansion kinda sucks. As someone above me said, I hope they don't pull a bioshock.

The Fallout 3 engine is not Bethesda technology. It's a middleware engine called Gamebryo released by a company called Emergent. An earlier version of it was used to make Elder Scrolls III Morrowind

I think most of Bethesda's troubles with animation and art stem from them not having a strong base of character animation talents. It may be an engine limitation as Gamebryo games released recently tend to be mediocre in terms of graphics. But I suspect that licensing Gamebryo just a cheaper way to make a game in an engine with lots of options and support and so it appeals to studios who don't have the graphics or system programmers to create their own engine or the animators and artists to make a visually very ambitious project.

Bethesda as a software studio seems to mainly excel at doing free roaming environments in cells separated by short loads and in doing a faction joining style of story development.

Now that they bought iD studios (who are known for high end character design, animation polish, and creating licensable engines with crazy visual effects) that may change. Or it may not since Carmack may not feel like writing, testing, and supporting a free roaming rpg engine or adapting idTech 5 to be an rpg engine. Still one would hope that there will be some crosspollination.

I think Fallout: New Vegas is mainly an attempt to get another Fallout game out there quickly, that will look and feel very familiar to Fallout 3 fans, still contain lots of new stuff, mix in some old stuff from previous Fallouts, and that has the advantage of using a studio that has several members of the original Black Isle crew on board.

All I know for sure is that I am looking forward to this game very much. I am rather addicted to Fallout games and even enjoyed the trashier followups to Fallout 2, Brotherhood of Steel and Tactics:BoS.

I have positive expectations. In my view there some minor cause for concern. Obsidian has a slightly tarnished record due to NWN2 and Kotor 2 but they've not made a truly bad game yet that I know of.

Great post, but may I add that idTech5 is being used to power RAGE, an open-world FPS/RPG made by id. Since the engine is already proven to work with open world RPGs, I think the chances are higher that Bethesda might tap id to work with them on Elder Scrolls 5 on animations.
