PlayStation Showcase 2023: What did everyone think?

It’s almost time to see what’s next — PlayStation Showcase broadcasts live next Wednesday, May 24 at 1pm Pacific Time / 9pm British Time.

The show will run a bit over an hour, focusing on PS5 and PS VR2 games in development from top studios from around the world. Expect a glimpse at several new creations from PlayStation Studios, as well as spellbinding games from our third-party partners and indie creators.

Microsoft can definitely have a better showcase than this I can almost guarantee it. Hellblade and Starfield alone will be enough. I'm actually interested in summer gamefest and the other show case. Sucker Punch is still making Ghost 3 assuming, and is too early for anything. I'm surprised factions didn't show up though.

Phantom Blade 0 with no release date or release window was given but was the only big title besides SM2. I'll say this is the weakest showcase Sony put on in a long time though.

First disappointment of the game show season.

I just really wanted some exciting psvr announcements. Resi 4 will be great but I just wanted something not announced and of that scale.

Don’t hold your breath for MS one being much better, I would love it to be amazing but they’ve consistently let us down pretty much every year for near on the last decade now. If they dedicate too much time to star field it’ll be super disappointing because it’s out 3 months later. We need some unknowns to be announced for the near future.

First time literally ever I have been disappointed by Sony, and iv been playing since ps1.

We wait a yr and half to see what ps studios are cooking up and you effectively show us 1 game right at the end.

Spider man 2 look amazing as expected but that's about it.

Really nice 3rd party showcase with cool sequels like Alan Wake II, Dragons Dogma II, Ghostrunner II and the new IP Phantom Blade zero
But no updates from any Silent Hills, Pragmata, Stellar Blade,
RE4 VR and Arizona Sunshine II were pretty good VR showcase
Indies were good ...
But ... first party mainly comprised of only new Live-service title announcements. Lol
Spiderman 2 was the only saving grace at the end.
Seems like MGS Remake announcement was the main star but it was leaked wayy before for it to become the ultimate surprise.

I agree. This show was trash. I'm a huge Playstation fan but this was disappointing. We waited all this time for this? Were their good games that I seen, of course but it was still trash. Where was all of their 1st party? Huge L in my book. I don't want to hear excuses either. I just expected better from Sony. Where was all the gameplay for these games. That was a strange one - Leaving Spider-Man 2 as the big reveal at the end was weird. The game is out in a few months and I'd have thought would be getting its own state of play in the summer.

You have to wonder what on earth is up with PlayStation Studios at the moment though. We've basically had no updates since the original PS5 launch showcase. There has to be plans for later in the year to reveal more surely?

No first party games announced. A few live service I personally don’t care about. A bunch of third party games which were okay, but I was looking for new games from Sony studios. A few vr games and indie games, all of which are fine but just disappointed about what wasn’t there.

I would have to say the best in show was Phantom Blade0. Very excited to see more of how it develops . I’m sure it’s not an exclusive either.

Dragons Dogma2 was good to see being announced, but I also had a moment of hope that it was Project Awakening, but alas ‘twas not.

Agree. Plenty of it looked neat, but just something lacking, or you got stuff that just feels like it's trying to copy something else. Foamstars ripping off Splatoon? That MGS reveal. The tone is completely off. Should have been kind of classic James Bondish, and instead we get some nature "there's always a bigger fish" thing. Oh, and show Snake at the end. I'm sticking with no Kojima, no care.

I think more likely will be VR - I'm pretty sure there will be some pretty huge VR announcements as PSVR2, in my opinion, hasn't yet got that killer 'product seller' game - like Half Life Alyx

@Jin I disagree it was bad. We just got overly excited. I did think it was very possible we didn’t see any first party single player before Spiderman2 and FF16 comes out.
They clearly are leaving the spotlight for a few big games at a time before showing new stuff.

Phantom Blade Zero looks amazing and Dragons Dogma 2 is one of my most anticipated games for years now.

If they took the GaaS stuff out it would have been better pacing wise.
Though I hear Marathon is a remake of an old game that some people really loved I don’t remember it at all.

I am so conflicted because there were loads of games that I personally thought looked great, but I was also really disappointed that there were barely any megaton 1st party announcements.

Amazing show. Great combination of exclusives and 3rd party. Heldivers was a big surprise, like the phantom game, many rpg, bungie new game, metal gear, final fantasy seems goty level and Spiderman was just crazy. What a trailer.

The amount of rpg they are bringing. Even the fps games on vr seem cool.

This how you do a show. Combination of blockbuster and smaller games.

Of course Spiderman was the best for last. The animation seem mind blowing. What quality in everything aspect. A true next Gen game.

But for seconds I thought they wouldn't bring Spiderman. Well done. Probably the biggest seller of this Gen is coming. Insomniac is really a top studio.

Bottom line. Final fantasy Wil destroy everything in the summer, then metal gear, then spiderman and between a co-op heldivers. What a year for sony.

We all knew/know that, but why are they so secretive the last few years and not showing us what's coming? So many studios and we know so little of what's being worked on. Had they just announced one of those with a quick teaser trailer from one of their big studios would have gone a long way. Instead, we got Spiderman and a Gran Turismo movie trailer.

Dragons Dogma should be cool and I liked Towers of Aghasba, Phantom Blade, and Tower of Fantasy could be cool though it's Perfect World so it may be way too gatcha for me.

RE4 VR looked great and I had to mute the sound and look away for FF16. And I played the other cat quest games so I'm sure I'll get this one too. Interesting that they showed Marathon, it had been rumored quite a bit, and it'll be interesting to see how it turns out, though I don't know how many people these days have any clue what Marathon even is.

And of course, Spider-Man 2 stealing the spotlight.

Obviously, not every game will be for every person but I thought there was a lot of good stuff.

We both know you're going to have to pay one hell of a premium for those earbuds and the handheld. I've heard people in the industry talk about what they should be priced when they first leaked. The thought process for the handheld is that due to it only being useful when in close distance to the required PS5 system itself and how there isn't much tech inside it in order to do so that it really shouldn't be above $100, but ideally no more than $150 in order to be affordable to a wider audience. However with Jim Ryan in charge claiming Playstation to be a boutique brand now, we both know it's going to be at least $200... AT LEAST!

As far as the earbuds, they already have the affordable $100 headset that is surprising well priced for the quality. With earbuds being a fraction of the size and tech inside there is no way it should be expected to be above $50, but again ol' Jim Boutique Ryan is going to slap a $100 tag on them and claim the price is the same to the headset in order to give the consumer more choices at an affordable price while trying to claim he's doing us a favor by doing so.

Boy I really miss the brand before Jim Ryan took over.

It's going to look bad for Sony when putting earbuds on the shelf next to a headset that has better sound and is cheaper than earbuds if they go over $100 for them. That's bad marketing 101. I'm sure Jim will use whatever marketing hot words he can think of to make you think they're on par with Apple's earbuds but they've already got somewhat of a money hungry social image with the VR headset that's more expensive than the console needed to run it and a "pro" controller that's even more expensive than the Xbox elite 2 and doesnt bring much new to the table with a worse battery to top it off. People can claim to be fans of this stuff but numbers show most aren't buying in on this extra stuff despite what fanboys claim.

Totally underwhelming. Ryan talked about being innovative, all I saw was the same types of games we've been playing for the last 15 years. The PSVR section was woefully dull showing off games that have been on PC VR for quite some time (aside from RE4: RE VR).

Too many "Not actual Gameplay" notices. And it felt like one big advert for games that are well documented already with little actual gameplay presentation. I am interested in the Metal Gear games, but those were the worst kept secret of the moment. DD2 is nice to have but looks like a reskin of the original. And Alan Woke II, erm yeh. Sam Lake really is full of himself since Max Payne. Why don't Remedy make a game called Max Lake starring Sam Lake and be done with it.

Spider-man 2 looked great but the bit they showed featured too many scripted cinematic elements.

Let me not get into the PS5 games as these were lackluster as f and I can’t see why anyone would want a PS5 for the games presented. The screen controller…who asked for that? psvr2 will continue to be a hard sell with the games they have shown, none of those scream systemseller to me.

I thought it was great. Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Marathon, Full Spidey Demo, New Hardware, Great VR showcase! So I was pleased.

There’s going to be another before summers out too. Feel people overhype themselves all the time.

I’d give the shower a 6/10 it was good with helldivers 2, phantom blade, mgs 3 remake, marathon and Spider-Man 2 gameplay not as many first party games were there but that just means state of plays to focus on those other studios or be announced during summer game fest

The showcase highlight was Spiderman 2, which looks potential GOTY. The rest of the showcase reinforces the idea that Sony is moving towards more GAaS to supplement their big single player experiences. And they know they will need to do that if they want to grow. Selling 100 million consoles is not really growth...they need to be able to sell 170-200 million - or increase subscriptions or both and that's not going to happen sticking with a purely traditional model.

The Q device seems to be Sony showing they are interested in cloud gaming. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a wifi and cellular version.

All of this is interesting considering cloud and GAas are what their competitor gets criticized for.

One of the worst showcase ever.
Overuse of CGI trailers, too many live service games, not enough first party title showed or announced. We have waited 2 years for a showcase only to end up with that pile of rubbish. Sony needs a kick up their backside and the only way is for Xbox to up their game when they do their showcase.

What's really amazing is despite all of Microsoft's money, the PlayStation has consistent been the console with more must have exclusives. I didn't realize until I looked into it but Microsoft is MUCH bigger than Sony. Money =/= greatness

I thought it was great 👍 most of what I was looking for this fall is coming! Spiderman 2 and Alan Wake 2 are all guaranteed to launch 🚀 with no delay. Plus MGS Snake Eater announcement 📣 was enough to make this a good showcase. Yes wish they gave us Twisted Metal and Last of Us Factions, but we still got Summer of Gaming, Gamecom and other events. And we still got the VGA world premieres coming this winter ❄️
