PS5 Update Was Originally Planned for GDC 2020

We’ll get a deep dive on the PlayStation 5 from lead system architect Mark Cerny tomorrow, but what’s with the curious timing?

The other big ? is, will we SEE the PS5?

Atom6661537d ago

I'm 50/50 on whether they do or not.

Price is still the biggest question in my view, but I'm not expecting that for a while.

Axonometri1537d ago (Edited 1537d ago )

Same on 50%. Crossing fingers and toes for visual reveal. Price at this point... Well, I just hope I can get food and supply right now. I already had to dip into 2020 console savings. I am sure I am not the only one.

Eonjay1537d ago

The moral to this story is that GDC was supposed to be this week. This was always when we were gonna find out. So all that nonsense about everyone losing their cool was stupid.

$399 trust me on that

bouzebbal1537d ago (Edited 1537d ago )

Games and futureproof features are my most wanted things when I choose a console

StormSnooper1536d ago

I’m more excited to see the controller’s capabilities but I can’t deny that the box has me curious. On the other hand they called it a architectural deep dive. Yes? Maybe no box reveal yet.

bouzebbal1536d ago

We won't see it, it's the architect talking about the architecture and how they are planning diverse things. The physical shape is part of the marketing, and that'll be announced later

No shame in needing to prioritize. We all have more important things to spend money on right now.

I expect these systems are going to be very similar. If they're both going to be 12tf or more with the SSDs on top, I really want to see where they come in at for price.

The more powerful, the less sleek they'll be. Curious if Sony also goes functional design over aesthetics like the X.

Iberius1537d ago

I would posit functional over aesthetic due to the rumors about Sony investing in a high end cooling system; however, I’m hoping for both!

darthv721537d ago

I'm hopeful he will show a mock up of the finished product and go through the various features. Hope he shows the controller as well.

AngelicIceDiamond1537d ago

I'm pretty confident they'll show off the hardware. I feel like its a good time right now.Sony should be in a finish state especially if the rumors are true of their smooth developmental cycles.

Ju1536d ago

I don't need to see the hardware. Some ballpark specs and games, games, games. I want to see why I would want to buy this. I want to see what makes it worth upgrading - more than just frame rate and resolution. This was supposed to be a developer conference. I want to see that. Some tech demos - and games, even if those would be PS5 versions of top PS4 games - I sure would like to see a glimpse of Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us 2; but you know, I would be fine with Killzone SF re-imagined (with RT, 4K and 60fps), or GoW, or even GT. But some real content enhanced. Maybe Godfall as a next gen title because it was already announced. I doubt this is the time for new game reveals, though. Spider man with 8k and faster loading I could give a pass, but not just running PS4 games on that machine; I want to see enhancements.

Visceral891536d ago

@Ju I think we definitely see Gran Turismo, could be Sport running 8k or 4k 120fps, but better yet would be a glimpse of the next GT. Horizon 2 demo for PS5 would be a dream to see. Probably a Spider-man PS5 loading demo and seeing how much faster Spiderman can we sling through the city

spambot08151537d ago

since half of the world is in quarantine now and big events are a no, no for the foreseeable future, they might as well do the reveal like that.

jznrpg1537d ago

Im guessing no . If they were I’d guess they’d say so. But there’s a chance of course .

porkChop1537d ago

I think after such a long wait for the reveal, it would be in poor taste to not show us the system. Just reveal everything and get this out of the way.

Mr_cheese1536d ago

I can imagine this is also a huge blow for GDC as they would have been the reveal platform which doesn't happen every year...

You mean there was actually a logical reason for Sony not revealing any information about the PS5 until now?

Not possible!

Redemption-641537d ago

According to some people it's because Sony was scared of MS

darthv721537d ago

And according to others it was Sony waiting to see what MS does first.

RememberThe3571537d ago

Well with the ass whooping MS put on Sony this gen... Oh wait.

AngelicIceDiamond1537d ago

Actually, it was according to so called journalists and puff pieces or were saying those things first. We all know that was a flat out lie. W're only a month removed from when Sony unveiled the PS4. One month means PS5 IS DOOMED!....

Redemption-641537d ago

@darthv72
And there is nothing wrong with wait and see. Sony is the market leader, No one forced MS to drop news about their next gen system and if I was competing with someone that cannot keep quiet, I will wait too, even if I have the clear advantage.

MasterCornholio1536d ago

Some people acted like they wouldnt even reveal the system before releasing it due to that. Any logical person knows that it's just false. Even if it turns out to be weaker Sony will still reveal it before selling it.

With that said people need to focus on what Cerny will say about the specifications tomorrow. That will tell us the strengths and weaknesses that it will have when compared to the competitors system.

StormSnooper1536d ago

Yes because MS really showed Sony... oh umm wait.

KillBill1536d ago

According to the now released specs we see why they should be scared. It is PS4 Pro vs Xbox One X all over again in terms of which is the more powerful console.

Segata1537d ago

I want to see the console and please look like a console and not a kitchen appliance.

darthv721537d ago

the only console I've ever seen that looked like a kitchen appliance was the NES toaster, but that was custom made.

I guess the original PS3 did sort of look like a forman grill but that's about it.

Segata1537d ago

Xbox Sex looks like a fridge. NES was a toaster. Gamecube was a lunchbox. PS3 was a grill.

darthv721537d ago

The SX looks nothing like a fridge (mini or otherwise). If anything it looks like a sub woofer and is the same size. It is equal to two game cubes stacked. People just want to see things how they want instead of how they are.

Traecy1537d ago

It looks like a portable speaker.

snoopgg1536d ago

Does this include your perception of the design.

StormSnooper1536d ago (Edited 1536d ago )

All jokes aside, it does resemble a cheese grater. At least it reminds me of one. Not saying it’s ugly, but it had its best impression on me when it was first revealed, the more time passes, and novelty wears off, the less appealing it looks. But, looks isn’t that high up my priorities anyway.

ShadowWolf7121536d ago

It looks like it should come with Alexa.

Can FSR 3 frame generation deliver the 120fps dream on PS5 and Xbox?

Frame generation technology has arrived on consoles, amplifying frame-rates and potentially transforming experiences.

adds between 8.3-15.3 milliseconds of latency on the game they tested, - no thanks

darksky15h ago

Base latency is 130.8ms and frame gen takes that up to 139.1ms. A 7% increase in latency is hardly a deal breaker.

Zenzuu15h ago

That's hardly a deal breaker and not really noticeable. Even the folks at Digital Foundry said so as well.

darthv721d 9h ago

Impressive results... sadly I don't have a 120hz display. I was thinking this technique could increase fps on any game that supports it regardless of the display.

purple1011d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

I have a vrr telly in the lounge,

On another point, what if it were the other way around where the developer aims for higher fps, then used something like pssr to make the resolution higher, that might be better?

Any which way, PS5 pro sure looks interesting now, being they have already doubled frame rate, with JUST just this fsr3.0

sagapo13h ago

It’s up to dev’s to implement FSR 3 support tho but most probably will I guess (hope).

Eonjay12m ago

Yes it would increase the framerate but it would add more noticeable latency. The impact of latency goes down the more natural frames produced. So a monitor that can push bast 60 will naturally allow the game to operate much smoother. Add VRR to this and now you have a much more enjoyable experience.

BlackDoomAx15h ago

Can it deliver the 60fps dream?

purple1016h ago(Edited 6h ago)

no, it delivers approx 80fps.

which is why I say why not target 60fps with this new tech and use the upscaling pssr, (Sonys version of Nvidia's DLSS, that seems so popular in the pc realm)

then we have best of both, better believe ps5pro will be doing all the above.

andy8515h ago

Now I've extensively tried it I'm not too fussed about 120 fps. Give me a locked 60 and more details and I'm more than happy

anast10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

120 is a bit slow. My eyes can't look at anything less than 260fps.
