Gamestop: Nintendo Switch is the Strongest Console Launch Seen in Years

Nintendo might have a winner on their hands here.

Not surprising, they always say that PR stuff without providing numbers. What other consoles launched in years ? Pro wasn't really that anticipated. PS4, and Xb1 were back in 2013, even then Gamestop sold all their physical, and online PS4 stock in less than 24 hours, and their shares climbed to the highest ever recorded for any console launch.

porkChop2631d ago

PS4 and XB1 were only a little over 3 years ago. That would be included in "several years".

yomfweeee2630d ago

Not exactly. People use that word in different ways.

Utalkin2me2630d ago

@porkchop

Several years equates to more then 2, but not as many. So in this case it, seems game stop has it right. Only thing that launched was the PS4pro in several years. Of course they worded it like that on purpose.

S2Killinit2630d ago (Edited 2630d ago )

And the xbox "S" and the Slim.

I know U.K has pretty much every console that has launched set a new record but it's always been down to how many they could get ready for day 1, ps2 were used to get hold of, Gamecube not sure I ordered months in advance and it was honoured. Xbox 360 was hard to get when I ordered days/weeks after launch Nov/Dec I was told see you in March/April 😩 Luckily had a call January or so but it was purely down to not getting the stock in quick enough and with 360 it was RROD and all the consoles needing replacing... Wii sold out for over a year consistently and even Wii U I thought set a launch record but they only ever around 150,000-200,000 sales due to the limited stock and well we all know what happened with Wii U sales died. Vita and 3ds even set records I think and psp. Just let down by not having enough ready. Cant wait to see how many Nintendo stocked here and there worldwide I heard 2 million and for a launch that's great. I guess U.K got 200,000/250,000 new record incoming? 🙄 I'm sure PS4 prob set one as well they'll release enough stock here to clear it no doubt but 2 million worldwide not that many to go round. Lot more than most before tho, lets face it unless it's apple and an iPhone no ones making 5-10 million units day one unless they are cheap enough that it wouldn't matter too much.
Seeing stores posting photos of 50/100 units and replying to tweets basically saying got no consoles for day one as all sold looks pretty good for Nintendo so far, not everyone is a Zelda fan so as the new games come along 1 a month minimum should be exciting times for multiplatform gamers.

PhoenixUp2631d ago

The console would have to sell 1 million units in its first 24 hours like PS4 and XO did for it to be considered the strongest launch.

jmac532631d ago

Apparently they had 2 million out there and looking at the scalpers on ebay it looks like they sold all of them.

jlove4life2630d ago

No 2million by end of march doesnt exactly mean all 2million shipped at launch

Utalkin2me2630d ago

@jmac53

Apparently, you dont understand or just dont care. Nintendo will have sold 2 million available by the end of march, not at launch.

"Nintendo just assured gamers that they will have 2 million consoles available worldwide during the first month."

Quote from first sentence.

http://nintendotoday.com/ni...

RosweeSon2630d ago

That's what I heard whenever that was but as person below has pointed out seems they weren't all ready for launch but this was news from a few weeks ago... they couldn't have upped production at all? 4-5 million end of year? If they get all the games out theyve announced so far, Kart, Splatoon Xenoblade, Mario etc and announce further titles towards end of this year and for throughout 2018 and provided they can keep up with demand think they could smash it.. hope so well deserved original and Nintendos seal of approval 👍🏻

jlove4life2630d ago

Well Nintendo financial report say 2million to be shipped by end of march thats 250k per week if broken down weekly point is i doubt they sold 1million in 24hrs http://venturebeat.com/2017...

RosweeSon2630d ago

Worldwide they would have smashed 1 million day one. U.K alone pretty much sold out that's a bare minimum of 100,000... more likely 200,000 consoles. Japan and America on top. Australia, Canada, Europe! Million seems pretty much done. Stores over here were selling 100 systems day one and not having any on shelves, sure eBay/scalpers will be over it but if Nintendo keep the stock coming in scalpers will have to find something else to try and rip people off for and the sales will continue either way for Nintendo if scalpers are all over them. However always best if it's the fans buying them and sure they will if they like quality games. Time to get back to the gaming greatness.

Concertoine2630d ago

Its not launching in the holiday season. Like those platforms.

2pacalypsenow2630d ago

Also Ps4 was $399 and Xbox $499, Switch is $299

yeahright22630d ago

Yeah but that years ago... OOOHHHH, now I get the headline.

EddieNX 2631d ago (Edited 2631d ago )

I get peoples gripes about it like not being as powerful as home consoles, but it seriously is the bees knees if you're into handheld gaming. And the games look great on the TV too. It goes perfectly with a PC or a PS4 , I'd say Xbox as well but PC

Zelda really is as good as they say it is, its litteraly perfect.

gamer78042631d ago

Zelda is for wiiu also though so that's not really a switch thing

EddieNX 2630d ago

Well its also on switch and its portable and is 900p which is significantly nicer on the eyes.
Twilight princess was on GameCube sort of situation here.

Cobra9512630d ago

Smooth 720p is nicer on the eyes than stuttery 900p.

EddieNX 2630d ago

Its smoother on Switch, particularly in handheld mode. In docked mode it's the same as Wiiu but itrs 900p which is acceptable for big screen these days, 720p looks quite a bit blurrier.

gamer78042630d ago

@EddieNX Sure its slightly nicer looking in tv mode on the Switch, if you want to pay over 400$ just for that. In portable mode the resolution drops to what the wiiu is and loses anisotropic filtering quality. You also need to put up with possible joycon sync issues.

To me there is no point if you already have a wiiu in buying the switch, i would wait a year until it has exclusives, mario oddysee and xenoblade 2. Possibly even getting a bundle at a reasonable price.

Zelda BotW is not perfect...no chance

EddieNX 2630d ago

It just is. It the most addictive playable game I've played by miles. I agree with the reviewers that there's allmost too much to do its overwhelming. You find yourself getting lost finding thing after thing .

Its probably the best game ever made. Its like Zelda, GTAV, Skyrim, assassins creed and dark souls with a hint of studio ghibli. Its probably the best game ever made.

It is a must play in every sense of the word, and any serious gamer NEEDS to play it.

Nintendo has pulled off something ridiculous with this game.

DeadlyOreo2630d ago

No point arguing with this guy Foxtrot. It clearly isn't perfect, which is a fact. But look at this guy's comments and you will see that he just can't stop blindly praising Nintendo.

I picked up a Wii U yesterday to play Zelda (only cost me £130) and I'm straight back on Horizon today. I don't know why people think Zelda is this perfect game lol. It's good, maybe very good. But definitely not perfect.

RosweeSon2630d ago (Edited 2630d ago )

No game is perfect you'll never get a 100/100 and if you do it's probablly a fan but no one can dispute it's reviewing seriously well. 9.8 metacritic 10/10 more or less across the board it's not your bag is one thing but can't knock this game sounds looks special and people clearly agree, critics and Users alike... key part being Users people who have or are at some point willing to play it. I'll get Horizon at some point but PS4 is full up and my funds are empty 😩😉

GTA5 is prob one of my favourite games (single player) online is a bonus but so much to do in campaign, Mario Galaxy was another winner preferred number 1 myself. Great games come in all different shapes and sizes but none are perfect and not will they ever be even the top top top games of a generation type games still have something that could be improved or just changed it's called hindsight

richyque2630d ago

Apparently 900p and constant drops to 15 to 20 fps and weak AA earns a perfect score on all gaming sites

Sirk7x2630d ago (Edited 2630d ago )

As of now, I'd say it's beating out Xenoblade Chronices for greatest game I've ever played. To me, it's unbelievably good. It may not be perfect, but there's a good chance this game is the closest any has ever come.

Nintendo hasn't been big on graphics ever since the wii, so I went into buying the system that I shouldn't be looking forward to mind blowing graphics but expect some great games and great gameplay after u have to look at the system for what it is, it's a handheld that can connect to your tv.

RosweeSon2630d ago

They haven't been big on graphics since N64. They had an expansion pack but Gamecube didn't exactly come smashing it out the park. They don't get into top tech they get the best out of what is being used and find new ways to use it. It's not all a raging success but wow they make some of the greatest games ever and the consoles are normally really cool, latest one is very exciting.

iplay1up22630d ago

I bet the Switch will be able to hold its own against 1st gen XB1/PS4. I am okay with that. Also Nintendo 1st party games on Wii U look fantastic!!!! Xenoblade X, is HUGE and looks great on my 60inch 4k TV. I cant wait to see what they do with Switches added power with Xenoblade.

Last_Boss2630d ago (Edited 2630d ago )

I got to Kakariko village then stopped. Right now this game is sitting a solid 7/10 for me. King Hyrule wasn't fooling anyone with the cloak. When you meet him on top of the church and he tells the story if 100 years ago, I knew what happened to him. Calamity Ganon corrupted those sentinels with the laser eye, which made me feel like a bit of Horizons enemies.

jmc88882630d ago

That's the thing. For handheld gaming, it looks great.

The problem for Nintendo is... not many people are into handheld gaming. They don't want to. If they ever do, their smartphone 100 percent satisfies.

Most want a proper console with the power befitting it. That's not Switch, and it costs more despite everything.

Considering I would never take it off the dock, the Switch version of Zelda and Wii U version of Zelda are basically the same. So I'll get the Wii U version.

A 3 TFlop console for $299 would of had this thing running 1080/60 easily, and likely could of attempted at least 4k/30, perhaps 4k/60.

I would of liked THAT far better then portability.... it also would of given me a reason to upgrade from my Wii U. Switch doesn't do that on any front.

RosweeSon2630d ago

I've got space for it alongside my 2TB PS4 (full up) 3ds rammed with games, Vita and Wii U (for now until Mario Kart arrives haha) got 360 still as well but switch although I haven't started properly gaming on it yet looks really promising, just want my zelda case to turn up and it'll be coming to the night shift with me this week ;) the fact it can go full screen is awesome. I must admit I was ah it's a home console and of course it still is but now I've got it, definitely geared towards handheld and going out with it however it can still do both and the games aren't iPhone ports (ok sure they will turn up) but your getting proper games here as well hence why Mario Kart is being ported and Zelda is getting touted as best game ever already and things like Skyrim etc will turn up, it's a console on par with launch Xbox 1 that you can take with you, if you like games if you have owned a 3ds if you like Nintendos fantastic back catalogue which is ever expanding or you like games in General, have a PS4 but space for something else... this is the something else!! However it could be a real winner... gonna catch up with PS4? Nah but seriously who cares about sales doesn't effect the quality. Next gen proper Ps5 Switch2 and Xbox 1080?... oh maybe not ;) gonna be exciting but hey Switch has been out 2 days next gen isn't coming until 2020/2021... apart from Scorpio on its own with no games still 🤔🙄✌🏻&# 129299;

New PlayStation Handheld Reported Again, Supposedly Runs PS4 Games

Another leaker has claimed that a PSP/PS Vita style PlayStation handheld is in the works, and it'll supposedly support PS4 games.

If this is true, it will crush everything for the price.

-Foxtrot11h ago

If you had every PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP and PSV game then sure but I mean if it's just the PS4 why not just get a Steam Deck?

anast44m ago

You might be correct, but it depends on the price point. Also, most PC gamers wait years for Sony releases, so it might be better just to get the PS4 handheld.

MrBaskerville3m ago(Edited 2m ago)

If it supports your library, some people own more ps4 games than steam games. I know I do.

MeteorPanda1h ago

I still play my vita. The oled screen was too good for it's time. I obviously had to home brew it but playing my old snes/ps1 games on it is so good.

Skuletor36m ago

How many people will buy this at launch? As a Vita owner, I'd definitely hold back after how Sony's support for that turned out.
Also, PSP played near PS2 quality games, PS Vita played near PS3 quality games, shouldn't the next Playstation handheld be aiming for near PS5 quality?

So that’ll be £1000 with a zen 5 cpu and god know what graphics card

Good one

Also now they have promised cod on nintendos systems, the switch 2 might become VERY popular as a cod console with the kids, tethering it to their 5g phones, or the schools WiFi hehehe

chicken_in_the_corn13h ago

Don't believe it. The documents from the FTC case say 2028 and that holds more weight than this.

ThinkThink11h ago

I think they are going to drop a handheld next year and a next gen console the year after. I think it'll be one sku though at launch

Zeref1h ago

A lot of things in that document turned out to be cancelled plans though. We should have seen the digital series X by now and the new controller.

Sonic18812h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Microsoft has a long ways to go when it comes to the gaming industry

ravens522h ago

This is another thing MS is doing that I don't like. Like chill, foster your teams and try to make the beginning of some good series on the already powerful series x. They are trying to rush this gen. It's coming up on four years. So this gens life will be 5 years and on the 6th the next gen will be released? Stupid. Makes no sense especially seeing how long everyone has supported the Ps4 and Xbox 1. Annoying.

OtterX2h ago

Yea, they have had terrible 1st party support for 2 gens now. Why would anyone rush out to get this new XBox, especially when they plan to bring the games they do have to Playstation? I love PS5 + Switch + PC. I don't see the point of an XBox console at all.

Reaper22_2h ago

Perhaps some people like playing games on xbox.

Sonic188134m ago(Edited 32m ago)

"I don't see the point of an XBox console at all."

You can play Xbox games on a smart TV in 1080p now lol as long it has the game pass app. No need for an Xbox

Einhander19722h ago

So, Microsoft has sold less consoles than the previous gen the past two generations with this most recent generation falling off the most. And in this current generation the most popular console by far is the least expensive one. But they are going to try to push out another console that is supposedly powerful not the thing that actually worked for them a cheap game pass console...

And they are going to come out with this thing when the PS5 Pro will be on the market so it's unlikely that they will be able to make any significant power gains. Certainly not to the point that PlayStation 5 won't be able to play the games. Heck we see how long the PS4 has stayed relevant, PS4 games will still be getting released in 2026. And given their console sales track record no publisher under the sun is going to skip PlayStation to make games for xbox. And with the way Microsoft is positioning themselves as such a rival publisher I can't imagine many publishers really looking to prop xbox up. Heck we hear rumors of publishers skipping xbox for releases.

If this is actually true, this thing is DOA.
