Xbox Scorpio Likely Considered Next Gen

Some time has gone by and the lovely people all over the internet have been sharing contextual quotes from the developer behind Microsoft’s exclusive video game, Ori & The Blind Forest.

MS has stated time and time again that it is not next gen. Well unless of course....

@Skydragoonityx

People have taken the not next gen comment way out of context. It was said time and time again it will resemble a console that has no generation tag that has backwards and forwards compatiblity with all Xbox games. Why is that so hard to understand?

343_Guilty_Spark2675d ago

It's not hard but saying next gen over and over gens clicks

JackBNimble2675d ago

Well what about the " no one gets left behind" comments?

Didn't Phil Spencer say that all Scorpio games will be playable on Xbox one? So that would make it no different the what the pro is to ps4.

rainslacker2675d ago

If it does well enough, I'd imagine MS will drop X1 support, and make it a next gen. I'm sure they have an idea of what Sony has for PS5, so it's likely the decision on if it's an X1, or a new gen will depend on what Sony does, and how long MS decides to support hardware which isn't managing to make them as much money.

Too many variables to say one way or the other if this will be a next gen console, or just a mid-gen upgrade. Time will tell.

donthate2675d ago

Xbox 360 is the only console with a legitimate 8-year console generation. That is the longest console generation I know of.

Godmars2902675d ago

Thing is, if they want to chase after the tech dragon, Sony has the advantage of making a pure "Next Gen" system vs the 1.5 version of the Scorpio. be nice if they made BC in the PS5 a thing again while also making more PC like - "yeh" - but unless it comes from cloud/streaming that's the libraries from 4 console gens to selectively choose from with legal BS to cut through besides.

andrewsquall2675d ago

So you think Microsoft will just turn around and screw over 25 million current fans just like that (even the ones that bought another Xbone when the S came out). That sure will be a spectacle especially after saying at E3 2016 that ISN'T what they will be doing with Scorpio.

rainslacker2674d ago

@donthate

If you consider legitimate the fact they released it early because of the problem with NVidia, then sure. OK

Not sure what that has to do with my post....so perhaps you could clarify why you decided to mention it.

@God

That's kind of what I was implying. Sony could jump to next gen at any point, or continue on for as long as they can maintain support with the current PS4P tech. Sony could even drop the PS4 legacy mandate at some point, just like I'm saying MS could.

@andrew

Yes, I believe MS would. Sorry, but MS is well known for dropping support to push newer things. Not just in the console space, but through almost all their products. They dropped support for the original Xbox, they barely supported the 360 at the end of the gen when they could coast through to next gen and moved projects over to X1, and I believe 100% that MS isn't so invested in the OGX1 that they would hesitate to drop it prematurely.

I'm not saying it will happen right away, and it may very well never happen until the Scorpio's successor comes out, but I still think the OGX1 is going to be on the way out sooner rather than later.

donthate2674d ago (Edited 2674d ago )

rain:

It doesn't matter if MS decided to release it early or not, although I really think Sony was delayed in their mismanagement of bringing PS3 to the market.

Point was, MS won't drop support for X1 any time soon (despite the FUD you are trying to spread). MS have the longest legitimate console running in history of console. It makes no sense to drop the 30+ million users they already have any time soon. If it is far away, then why bring it up?

It's like saying Sony will suddenly drop their 50+ million user base when it suddenly starts to sell slowly. It's pointless to bring that up, because it is so far into the future nobody knows. Not even Sony or MS knows.

And no, Sony can't just jump another generation whenever they want to, just like MS can't either. That would just upset their customers, cost them a lot of money in both R&D and take on massive risk which makes no sense. It does require some business acumen to see that.

rainslacker2673d ago

First, I was originally posting a hypothetical. But I based it on MS history.

The FUD I spread is what actually happened. MS released the 360 early due to the dispute with NVidia, and for the situation, I feel their hand was forced, and I am not one of the people who judges MS for it.

However, the way they handled the 360, and they way they handle the X1 now, does not make me think they will care that much about the OGX1 for the long haul.

However, I do feel that it will completely depend on how well the Scorpio does.

I don't think that MS will drop support soon. But I think they would do it sooner rather than latter if the Scorpio does well.

Yes, it is like saying Sony would do it too, but Sony doesn' have a history of that with their home consoles, and there is no reason to believe they would do so here. But I will concede if the PS4P sold hotter than the stock PS4, then sure, Sony may move on.

When I say that Sony could just jump into a new gen, I didn't mean to imply that they could just do it at a whim. I meant they could do it within a time frame which would be pretty appropriate to have the PS4 be a decent gen, and the PS5 being the successor, and answer to whatever success MS will have.

Actually they stated that gens don't matter. They are transgenerational

Summons752675d ago

They haven't stated that at all or else it'd be called Xbox One Scorpio. Go back and listen to the way they worded the announcement....next gen.

Aenea2675d ago

The name isn't known yet, Scorpio is the internal project name...

MyDietEqualsGames2675d ago (Edited 2675d ago )

Word is the CPU and GPU situation all over again, like PS4 Pro, but more powerful still.
White paper has shown that Microsoft wants to adopt either a similar or the very same approach, but worded different, that Sony uses "checkerboard rendering" for the Scorpio games.

I doubt they will 180 if this turns out to be true.

nerdpodamus reaching for the stars.

Major_Glitch2675d ago

This gen? Next gen? It doesn't matter. Kinda hard to sell a console that doesn't have any exclusives.

endi1232675d ago

Absolutely not a next-gen, 6tf gpu isn't a huge leap considering the lack of a new cpu, it is a placeholder for next-gen similar to ps4 pro, nothing more, idk why people (journalist) just don't give it a rest, even from a business standpoint it would be stupid from ms to label it next-gen in any way

MasterCornholio2675d ago

A 180?

That is possible but we have to wait and see what happens.

Raiden2675d ago

These guys have the wrong mindset on Graphic chip, there is no way MS is paying the same price like the general public, if the price is like £$400 then expect MS to purchase each at bulk price even at £$200, when you consider what chipsets go into a standard PC or Laptop, and the cost of then, but I believe many people are forgetting one major point, MS has 2 other devices on the market, so there is no way there are paying some super high price for the graphic chipset, I believe 2things 2019-20 you will see another Xbox that competes with the PS5 which we'll see in revealed at E3 2018 for a late 2019 launch, the Scorpio is MS beginning to bridge the gap between PC and console gaming.

i wonder how that will go down with all the people who bought xb1.

DarXyde2674d ago

S2KillinIt,

If I had to guess...similar to how it went down with Pro where there really was no backlash.

At least at first. I think that, once we begin to see exclusive content, we might see some consumer frustration.

I doubt it'll be anything to serious.

Godmars2902675d ago

Don't think its about whether or not MS "flips a switch" but rather, whether or not the industry flows them.

Yeah, the PC minded gaming crowd might want "More Power!" but what really has come of that? Aside from studio closings and unplayable titles rushed to market when they haven't been canceled outright.

And speaking of under performing studios, how is it ignored that MS has had development issues for almost as long as they've been in gaming? They really don't have 1st party support, lack 3rd party because they're trailing behind the PS4, yet a new more powerful box is going to change things, for the better, as everyone is still trying to gear up to current hardware?

freshslicepizza2675d ago

where are they lacking third party outside of japanese developers? and more power has made my pc gaming experience better.

LexHazard792675d ago (Edited 2675d ago )

Really what development issues did they have on Xbox, Xbox 360? Even Xbox One hasnt had many issues other than it couldnt achieve 1080p consistently... games were still good and playable. The only hiccup i could remember is Halo MCC multiplayer, which was an embarrassment. But I want you to tell us what the issues Xbox or Xbox 360 had since you said Xbox has had development problems since the beginning.

Lol.....lack third party support? If anything that support is whats keeping Xbox going. They just dont have the support of most Japanese devs, but if Xbox 360 is indication they can survive without Japanese games.

Just checking at some of the most popular games on the market. The majority are made by western developers.

donthate2675d ago (Edited 2675d ago )

MS is making in-roads on US market and other key regions against Sony. That is with one console refresh. Wonder what Scorpio is going to do?

2016 did mark the turning point for Xbox, and 2017 is going to be the smack down. It's not like Sony's got many games that is dated for this year anyhow. They just blew their entire load of games they are planning to trickle out year-after-year anyhow. Just the usual Sony, we show games too early.

WickedLester2675d ago (Edited 2675d ago )

Agreed. They did a pretty good job of masking this with the 360 because of all of the third party marketing deals that they had along with timed exclusive content. However when you really look at it closely there's very little in terms of first-party that Microsoft has to offer outside of Killer Instinct, Halo, Gears, and Forza. Sure you'll get a one off title here and there like Ori and the Blind Forest but for the most part, Xbox is "Gears-Halo-Forza" machine. If you're cool with that, hey more power to you. However for me I prefer the more diverse PlayStation library.

Godmars2902675d ago

@LexHazard79:
The Xbox, game-wise, suffered from falling into the wake of the PS2 as it was outsold on a 10-1 basis. The 360? That whole mess of a console gen that's only starting to be admitted to now that the XB1/PS4 are out.

And really, if the XB1 didn't suffer from a shortage of games, had traction, wasn't relying on 360 BC, the Scorpio wouldn't even be a thing.

Aenea2675d ago

@donthate

LOL, Sony doesn't have many games slated for this year? Are you crazy? The facts say otherwise!

And as for showing games early: I rather they are delayed then canceled 😜

freshslicepizza2675d ago

@Godmars290

nothing you just said answered the question, what lack of third party syupport other than japanese publishers? i was right, you never actually answer anything.

Godmars2902675d ago

@moldybread:
Nothing to your satisfaction anyway.

They outright ignored game genres with the Xbox, embarrassed themselves as JRPG beta-testers becoming more gun-shy towards JP devs with the 360, and again, the XB1 speaks for itself regarding lack of support. Have become so focused on online MP that SP titles are an active exception. Have their fans praising PSN/XBL type titles like Cuphead and Ori.

freshslicepizza2675d ago (Edited 2675d ago )

Godmars you specifically mentioned lack of third party support and now you want to rant about Microsoft and their lack of diversity and online focus. You are worst than a politician, you say one thing and then when you get challenged in the subject you deflect and dodge then move onto something else.

As I said, outside of Japanese support which they have always been gunshy towards the Xbox brand, what third party is ignoring the Xbox? Even Japanese support had improved. The old days games like tekken and devil may cry were pretty much Playstation exclusive.

This constant spreading of misinformation is getting boring now. It's not a next gen console, it's still an Xbox One.

Goldby2676d ago

so i can hook up a VR specific scorpio game into the xbox one and play it?

Lennoxb632676d ago

You can't hook up a VR headset up to the PS4 and just play either. They basically launched another console in order to run on the original PS4 and the Pro.

Goldby2676d ago

@Lennox, but you can, i know this, because i have a PSVR and PS4.

Lennoxb632675d ago

You can't. There's an external unit you need to run VR on the PS4.

generic-user-name2675d ago

@lennox

What a terrible argument. The 'external unit' is part of the PSVR headset.

Death2675d ago

@Lennox,

The external box is simply splitting the signal from the PS4 to the VR headset and HDTV. It's not adding a more powerful GPU/CPU.

@Goldby,

According to Sony, PSVR is it's own platform. Microsoft hasn't announced any new platforms for the Xbox One. There hasn't been any official announcements for VR support on Scorpio, but it's widely known it will support existing and new VR platforms due to it's increased power. VR shouldn't be the deciding factor when it comes to new generations. Switch is a next gen machine by Nintendo. PC's didn't experience a generational jump when Rift and Vive hit either.

LexHazard792675d ago

@lennox, that box is a signal splitter so that you can see on hdtv what is being displayed in VR. Also you would have to disconnect it if you really want to take advantage of hdr gaming. But its not another console, lol....

Aenea2675d ago

@Lennox

Nope, that external box is not another console, it's just a splitter and does 3D audio, nothing more, nothing less.

If that's a console then the dock for the Nintendo Switch is also another console for example. It's silly...

_-EDMIX-_2675d ago (Edited 2675d ago )

Agreed, I don't even see the benefit to Microsoft even trying to exclusively start another Market because it's essentially pointless even as a business standpoint.

Software makes more money than Hardware the point of selling a lot of Hardware is to build and install base to make the most money off of software.

So in essence it's completely useless to start another generation all over again because you're technically wasting more money not really earning more money.

Especially when you're not market-leader the smartest thing for Microsoft to actually do is wait until Sony decides to shift their Market simply because the majority of third-party are going to side with Sony so Microsoft actually needs to follow their lead.

People need to consider this how many third parties do you seriously think are going to go out of their way to make an exclusive title for the Scorpio with a non-existent install base? So spend more money on a graphically demanding game to sell less units?

Do some of you idiots even think? All you have to do is slowly think about the situation to understand just how little sense it actually makes.

Death2675d ago

How many third parties do you think will support PSVR? Isn't this the same as Scorpio or even PS4 Pro support? I agree, getting support for these new and smaller platforms is difficult. A lot will depend on how Microsoft is approaching how the additional power is going to be used. If it's like the Ps4 Pro, I believe it will be a huge mistake. If it's handled like PC, much less will be needed by devs to use the power. Microsoft is trying to turn Windows 10 into the platform with each piece of hardware using it to different degrees.

Waiting for Sony to decide anything will always keep Microsoft in second place in both sales and technology. It's silly to feel any company should depend on another before they innovate. Switch looks like it will be a great console/platform. Scorpio will have the ability to add more to gaming, but much will depend on how the additional power and features are used.

Raiden2675d ago

@EDMIX

How do we move forward, did SONY stop making and stop sell our even stop support for the PS3, has MS stop completely support for the 360, no has 3rd stop making games for all of last gen consoles, as I'm pretty sure the games are still released.
We move forward by transition until what is old is replaced and developers will follow. The Scorpio is a mid level high end gaming console ans dev's will use it, all dev's want there software to look the best, but in the end a console survival depends on the software. To live we need air, a console need games and new one

corroios2677d ago (Edited 2677d ago )

Nope, its not a Xbox One. Just because it can run Xbox One games... So the Xbox One isnt a next gen console, because it can run 360 games...

Why is so hard to understand that. Nothing was upgraded on the Scorpio. There zero tech from the Xbox One.

CPU, RAM, GPU everything is next gen. Its even over the ESRAM... that is inside the Xbox One.

The gold of the Scorpio was 4k and 4k is next step in gaming. The current gen is 1080p games and the next gen is 4k gaming.

The Scorpio is the start of a new gen.

tyasia02677d ago (Edited 2677d ago )

You got that backwards XBone is a new gen because 360 can't run XBone games. If the XBone and the Scorpio both run the same games then it's the same gen. If 4k is the deciding point the PS4 Pro was the first next gen console.

Goldby2676d ago

but the xbox one cant run the scorpio exclusive VR titles.

and xbox one cant do 4k

corroios2676d ago (Edited 2676d ago )

If microsoft wanted, the 360 could run the xbox one games at lower settings and rez.

Nope , the pro isnt a native 4k machine. Its a upgraded, because it got the same cpu overclocked same ram upgraded gpu, but its not made to reack 4k on every game. They need more power , but is amachine from 2016 at 399 or 349

tyasia02676d ago

Oh so then since it's resolution that determines generations and not when the prior console no longer plays the newer games. I guess that must mean Atari though PS2 were all the same generation?

WeAreLegion2675d ago

There's no such thing as a Scorpio exclusive VR title.

_-EDMIX-_2675d ago

@gold- just like an Xbox that doesn't have Kinect cannot play Kinect games....

That doesn't mean Kinect is a completely different generation , it's simply saying a specific feature on the specific version of Xbox is exclusive to that one SKU.

I mean you have to consider we had 360s that had HDMI, compared to 360 that didn't, is that another generation too?

When Nintendo released the ROM adapter for the Donkey Kong and Zelda Majora's Mask is that another generation as well?

2675d ago
Death2675d ago

Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio are attempting to do the same thing. Just because the Scorpio has more power than the Pro, that doesn't mean it's a next gen console. If the day comes where Scorpio gets a console exclusive that the Xbox One can't play, then we can say it's the start of a new gen. Realistically it sounds like both Sony and Microsoft are looking to change the way hardware generations change.

2675d ago
Goldby2672d ago

@Edmix

Im more speaking of the fact to even play VR games on and Xbox Console, you need to first purchase the VR Headset and on top of that purchase a brand new console to be able to run.

It isn't that VR is optional, its that Scorpio is required for VR.

and as for my comment about x1 cant do 4k. they ahve a system that barely hits 1080p for all of their games, and people are honestly believe that a system (with absolutely nothing the same from x1) is the same gen when it can hit 4k gaming. the ps4pro is still a ps4 at heart, the scoprio is somehting else entirely. thats the difference.

As for games, go look at the reveal for scorpio. all the talk about is fallout 4 VR. if it wasn't exclusive, it would already be on PS4.

No the Pro was which is the 5 in disguise Sony just didn't tell you because Microsoft blindsided them with the announcement of The Mighty Scorpio but that left Microsoft in a bad situation because they don't know how to tell current Xbox owners they moving on

_-EDMIX-_2675d ago

?

Except a generation is more so defined by the market exclusively shifting to a specific platform.

How could the Scorpio be the start of a new generation if it's actually just playing Xbox One games? I'm sorry but that's not how we Define generations that's like saying if I purchase multiple gpus as they released then I'm going multiple Generations lol

No buddy, that's dumb.

2675d ago
Aenea2675d ago

"If microsoft wanted, the 360 could run the xbox one games at lower settings and rez. "

Nope, rather impossible since the CPU and GPU are actually totally different! They would need to emulate the x86 cores on PowerPC cores, could work if you want the games to look like they run on a NES!

"Nope , the pro isnt a native 4k machine. Its a upgraded, because it got the same cpu overclocked same ram upgraded gpu, but its not made to reack 4k on every game. They need more power , but is amachine from 2016 at 399 or 349"

Scorpio isn't a native 4k machine either, you missed that article about "sparse rendering" hmm? Which is essentially MS's variant of checkerboard rendering.

As I and many others have said, the Scorpio specs aren't good enough to run EVERY game in native 4k.

So by your own standards Scorpio is not native 4k, thus is not next-gen....

Yohshida2675d ago

If you buy a new gpu for PC, are you in a new Generation?

Puertorock772675d ago

Start of a new gen is more than hardware. It's primarily tool sets, applications, and engines that can't be ran on older hardware. No one is building a new engine just for Scorpio. It's using everything the Xbox 1 has only making it look prettier.

If it was truly next gen it would have it's own exclusive games that can't be ran on older hardware.

+ Show (5) more repliesLast reply 2672d ago
Lennoxb632676d ago

It's neither next gen or current gen. It's just another console in the series. It'll play all of Xbox's past games down to the 360, and all future titles until it starts to fall behind in power. Then MS will launch another console when the need arises. Or simply when they want to.

SegaGamer2676d ago

People need to forget about console generations when it comes to Xbox consoles from now on. It's all about upgradable consoles now.

Doopy2675d ago

This. Microsoft doesn't care about generations anymore.

Death2675d ago

Neither does Sony. Smaller transitions seem to be what both are looking to make. It makes sense since it adds value to the back catalog of games and increases the lifecycle of consoles as well. If this works we will always see a two tier option on shelves, the newer premium consoles and the "older" console before it. It keeps a $399 SKU out at the same time as a more mass market friendly $199 option.

_-EDMIX-_2675d ago

I agree but I would still Define it as current-gen in regards to the current market of titles it supports.

rainslacker2675d ago

It's pretty much what PS4P is to PS4. Unless something changes from MS, it's just an more powerful X1. Significantly more powerful, but the whole aspect of what generation it belongs to is more a market aspect, than a hardware aspect. If MS keeps it's legacy mandate, it's part of this gen. When/if they change that, it could change what gen it belongs to.

LexHazard792675d ago

Its not tho, PS4 Pro, correct me if Im wrong but the only changes were an up clock to cpu, and a more powerful gpu and obviously the new look.

Frikkin Xbox One Scorpio is a whole new machine, different ram, gpu,cpu, no esram, alot of changes. So i can see how people think next gen, its just MS not marketing it that way as of now anyway. Thats why I cant wait for E3, will they stay on track or change their minds.

rainslacker2674d ago

I understand that, but the way it's being marketed is that it's pretty much the same thing. So long as those legacy mandates stay in place, the two systems are essentially the same thing for the companies and the consumer. The differences in power are the only thing that separate them.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

Cacabunga2d ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--2d ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.

This will surely shut up all the new trolling accounts trying to spread lies and non facts in other articles comment sections before this article is posted.

Hofstaderman2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Obscurely, those trolls or troll will not show in these articles as the truth is contradictory to his or their orchard-sized daily dose of copium and hopium.

Tacoboto2d ago

Or... They're intentionally trolling you guys specifically. Because they know it upsets you so easily.

Name-dropping Orchard, after this many months? How long has it been and he's still in your thoughts?

I'm quite sure the individual is reading these positive comments downvoting & seething at the same time. Edit: It just downvoted my comment...lol!!

Hofstaderman2d ago

No I'm entertained by this individual. I love unhinged people, they are so interesting lol.

Wow! I am super impressed that in just 4 years, ps5 already caught up to the PS4's. Congratulations.

JackBNimble2d ago

That happens when half of your games are cross platform. I'm still waiting to see what the ps5 is capable of, because they sure haven't pushed any limits.

And where are all these ps5 exclusive games?

Not really surprised as Sony barely has any competition at the moment.
