it is far more than the sony equivalent of the xbox one S, it seems that the oneS is he xbox equivalent of the launch PS4 with added upscaling and 4k.

MatrixxGT2809d ago

So it has a upgraded GPU that won't be used to render games in 4K. The guy is saying its equivalent to Xbox one s in the HDR and 4K streaming area. I think people overestimated what the NEO was going to be.
I'm not rushing out to buy a 4K tv anytime soon so I'm just going to stick to my OG consoles for now.

Hedstrom2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

Rise of the tomb raider will have 3 modes for Pro, 1: 4k/30fps, 2: 1080p/60fps and 3: 1080p/30fps with higher graphical settings. So for two of those modes you dont need an 4k tv :)

mikeslemonade2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

I think it's lame how n4g has unofficially declaring the Scorpio to be better . Xbox is still irrelevant because it has no exclusives. The Pro is the only way you can play Sony exclusives on high settings. As for the Scorpio, I can do everything better on PC.

So it's really no debate on whether Scorpio or Pro is better. Plus you gotta wait hecka long for Scorpio. What the heck are you gonna play in late 2017 on Scorpio, just same old multiplats that I've been playing on max settings on PC already. People here are so casual.

subtenko2808d ago

@Hedstrom you mean HDR mode would kick the framerate in games from 60fps to 30fps? Ill just keep it like it is then :/

Hedstrom2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

@subtenko Not really what i said. HDR wont do anything to the framerate, it will (if you have an HDR tv) give a wider color spectrum. What i said was that if you have the Ps4 pro but not an UHD tv you will be able to chose from 1080/60fps or 1080/30fps with higher graphical fidelity. If you have the original Ps4 you will play it at 1080/30fps and lower graphical fidelity than with the Ps4 pro. Now Im talking about Rise of the tomb raider, other games might do diffrently.

ifistbrowni2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

@mikeslemonade, Really? I'm a die hard PS4 fan and an Xbox One (day 1-ish) owner. Originally, I'd agree with your statement about "no exclusive." But, if you look back on it now, the Xbox One has a lot of exclusives. Specifically, multiplayer - one specifically that has longevity (Halo) and one soon to be released that will also have legs (Gears of War 4).

Last year, if I follow the industry as well as I think I do, PS4 didn't have ANY 1-st party exclusives. I can only name about 3 or 4 in total that are 1st party exclusive on the PS4 - Infamous Second Son, Infamous First Light, Killzone, Knack, Driveclub and Uncharted 4 (most of which released Year 1) with plenty of "remastered" 1st party games, God of War 3, Tearaway, Gravity Rush, The Last of Us, Uncharted 1-3, Beyond Two Souls and Heavy Rain. The PS4 has more Re-Mastered 1st party content than they have exclusive 1st party content. It's kind of shameful - it's more shameful that I've played most of the remasters after completing them on ps3 (though, they're all pretty great games)

Don't get me wrong, I really liked some of the 3rd party PS4 exclusives. Bloodborne and Until Dawn were my "jam." But, to have a straight face and state that the Xbox One has "no exclusives" while siting on the PS4 bench should be close to impossible. Both consoles have decent exclusive libraries but Uncharted 4 has been the only one I've played that has absolutely "wow-ed" me. Gears of War 4 looks promising, but so did Halo 5 and the single player in that wasn't that hype.

heres my profile to legitimize my ps4 loyalty:

http://psnprofiles.com/omar...

and heres my psn profile that was banned for it's name only a few days after the PS4 release

http://psnprofiles.com/i_fi...

I'm loyal as all hell, but if I was to purchase a 4k TV and wanted 4k gaming, I'd trade in my current Xbox One and buy the Xbox One S. I'd get a cheaper console at $300 and it would actually be considered an upgrade since it would take up less room on my TV stand - only downside would be missing the Kinect - I use it regularly for navigating Apps while streaming videos. "Xbox, Go to Netflix" -sadly one of the only things I use my Xbox One for.

EDIT: The only reason Uncharted 4 isn't at Platinum on my account is because I'm saving it to be my 100th. Not real pertinent, just throwing that out there. I really did enjoy Uncharted 4 immensely. Not better than TLOU, but still pretty god damn great. I've platinumed TLOU 3 times as you can tell by looking at my accounts. TLOU is by far the greatest game ever made, imo.

The 10th Rider2808d ago

@Hedstrom,

Honest question here: Is there confirmation that the PS4pro can play 1080p games at 60fps? I didn't catch the whole stream and there's so many articles about it that I haven't seen anything official about it. I'd thought it wouldn't since the CPU is the bottleneck in most games, and the CPU didn't see a huge bump. I was expecting more stable framerates because of the bump, but not 60fps.

babadivad2808d ago

From this article, it makes it seem like it won't have 4k games at all. Is this true. This article makes it seem like 4k was only for streaming video. What's going on?

ULTsupterfugee2808d ago

^^^

It's just that, all of it is very vague. Sony is sort of hyping it as a 4k system yet it really isn't or maybe only for certain games but upscaled. We won't find out til' it launches and imo won't do native 4k or for most publishers won't even bother pursuing 4k on PS4kpro. But we all can agree that we have FINALLY reached full HD now and we shouldn't fall for the 4k bs hype. Next is when 4k will be relevant since it should be cheaper.

donthate2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

mikeslemonade:

"I think it's lame how n4g has unofficially declaring the Scorpio to be better . Xbox is still irrelevant because it has no exclusives. The Pro is the only way you can play Sony exclusives on high settings. As for the Scorpio, I can do everything better on PC."

That is what happens when you look at pure objective metrics, and don't rely on subjective metrics. Happened with the PS4/XB1 too. You can't just skew the discussion based on subjective metrics, you know like you did with this:

"Xbox is still irrelevant because it has no exclusives."

dumahim2808d ago

Eurogamer believes the games will probably be natively rendered somewhere between 1440p and 1800p and then use some special upscaling technique (and apparently hardware so it won't affect performance) to bring it up to 4K. So it's a bit unfair to compare Pro to the S since the S is still rendering at 1080p or less.

dumahim2808d ago

@The 10th Rider
" Is there confirmation that the PS4pro can play 1080p games at 60fps?"

It sounds like it is possible, but it's up to the developer to decide what to do with the extra power. For Tomb Raider, it has been said that the two 1080p modes are 30fps locked with extra graphic features and unlocked framerate. NOT 60fps. They were quoted as saying it should be above 45.

I think he is saying both are just upgrades of the base models and that the PS4 Pro is not sony's answer to the Scorpio.

I'm not going to have one right away due to kids and Christmas, but I'll have one early next year for sure.

_-EDMIX-_2808d ago

How could it be, It was clearly being made longer as Scorpio isn't coming out this year, Pro is......

Ju2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

The XB1S has no (well, 1%) power improvement, the 4K is a simple "signal scaler". You play the same 900p games on the XB1s (heck, it still doesn't do 1080p well) meanwhile the PS4Pro renders (!) in native 1800p (or even full 2160p/4K if so desired) but yet they are equivalent?

Yay, the only thing equivalent between the PS4Pro and the XB1s is the price.

MS press trying to lowball the PS4Pro is astounding.

Lenrulesdaworld2808d ago

the xbox one s scaler isn't a simple signal scaler, it's a top of the line scaler better than any scaler in any TV. The scaler actual improves the visuals of the game and it's visually noticeable.

Ju2808d ago

Of course it's a "signal scaler". It does not improve the rendering one bit. It's still the same 720p/900p/1080p framebuffer while the PS4Pro indeed renders in a much higher resolution.

LackTrue4K2808d ago

Ya but Microsoft can always just flip the switch and run the cloud program and surpass anything Sony's Ps4Plus can ever offer.

"Said no one ever"

starchild2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

What's going on. You guys are making my head spin. In the other article people were claiming the PS4 Pro isn't competing with Scorpio, but now people in this article are making it sound like the Xbox One S isn't competing with the PS4 Pro. Which is it? Or are we to believe that Sony and Microsoft exist in different universes and aren't really competing at all?

Aenea2809d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

Wow, this is a BS article. No it's not like the Xbox One S, it's not a slightly better GPU, it's GPU is over 3 times as fast as the one in the X1/X1S (2.3 times the PS4's)! It might not do native 4k gaming for most games, it will, however, be able to use a render target that is significantly higher than 1080p and then upscale which the X1S is NOT capable of.

Plus, ALL games should have support for the PS4 Pro not just a select few titles.

Clearly written by an Xbox fan or someone who didn't pay enough attention...

COMMENT-OF-THE-YEAR2809d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

The Xbox One S upgrade didn't even improve it's resolution issue. at best it gave it 3 or 4 fps on games that struggled which still couldn't reach 30fps with 900p res.. Check out digital foundry's video on it. They did a full blown analysis.

@dumahim LOL really? PS4 regular outputs 1080. You are full of shit.

@TWB That's not true. They bumped the clock up. Just not enough to matter really. They achieve this by using a smaller cpu di and overclocking a bit. Smaller di. less heat. Please don't tell people what you have written in your comment. It's completely incorrect.

dumahim2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

They also recently added this discussion as well. Good stuff. He went in a skeptic and was impressed. I think the important thing for people to keep in mind is that you're really not seeing the better visuals on a normal 1080 monitor or TV, especially without HDR. And this is a $400 box.

TWB2808d ago

Thats because its basicly not an upgrade. I think the original Xb360 vs Slim had a similar transistion, but MS actually downclocked the GPU a little (and it was still a little faster GPU, although just by couple of silly percents) so it would have been similar in terms of performance to the original model.

This jump in power was because they used a newer and smaller chip. They cant simply make the exact same chip but just smaller, so they are bound to have differences, and its usually better to overestimate the real world performance of the components than underestimate when you are designing the thing.

XB1 S basicly had the same target performance, but it ended up little more powerful and this time they decided not to downclock it. The additional performance is still only pretty marginal so it doesnt really matter when it comes to resolution. For example, I used to play BF4 on PC at 900p and it ran almost all the time at or over 60FPS, but bumpping the resolution to 1080p would drop my FPS at averange by 20, so that would mean it was running 40-60FPS in most cases. Thats a noticeable performance impact.

Its still nice that they didnt downclock the S though. Its not significant enough so some folks would feel the need to upgrade, but its noticeable enough to weed out some small drops that normally happened before.

Mulando2808d ago

the one s was never meant to be really faster than the original xbox one. It is just a bit faster to make use of HDR for games on a 4k screen. That's why they never really highlighted the slightly increased gpu clockrate. They just highlighted the HDR support.
HDR support is really cheap (meassured in gpu-cycles), but the really difference makes the HDMI 2.0a port, so the signal can be outputted to a screen that support it.
It doesn't make sense for sony to promote that every old ps4 get an HDR update, if in the end it outputs SDR. we have HDR on GPU-side for ages now, but it was often replaced by a cheaper "bloom" effect, because it has almost no advantage on an SDR screen.

Unarmed_Civilian2808d ago

As i understand games on Pro will be 2k resolution and using a hardware upscaler to 4k.

Eurogamer

However, a trio of the Sony first party efforts looked seriously impressive: Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone and Infamous First Light. All use the same cutting-edge upscaling technique. Previously we've talked about the 4x4 checkerboard process, where a 2x2 pixel block is extrapolated out into a 4x4 equivalent - next-gen upscaling, if you like. It allows developers to construct a 2160p 4K framebuffer from half the pixels - a much closer fit for the Pro's GPU prowess

Ju2808d ago

Sony recommends 1800p. 2k = 1440p. Digital Foundry found, that 1440p as a native resolution is kind of a sweet spot for this type of GPU - tested in a PC. But what they did not put into account is, that this isn't a PC. It also has a HW upscaler. Scaling 1800p to 2160p costs you nothing, it has no performance penalty. But, yes, it will probably run what we are used to with 1080p on the current PS4 @ 30fps on 1800p->2160p on the Pro.

Well, for people that have a 4K display, that is. Downsampling would give you 4x AA for free just by increasing the render target with the exact same content at native 1080p.

babadivad2808d ago

I'm confused, doesn't the X1S upscale to 4K just like the PS4 Pro? I'm guessing that's where the comparison is coming from. They're not saying the X1S is better, just that they do similar things. Stop being so sensitive.

I thought that what this article is saying is what most PS4 fanboys were saying. The PS4 Pro is going up again the X1S and not trying to compete with the Scorpio. Or is this not the case anymore?

dumahim2808d ago

X1S still renders the game at 1080p or less, just like the original did. It is then upscaled to 4K.
PS4 Pro will likely render the game somewhere between 1440p and 1800p, then upscale to 4K, which is 2160p. So the PS4 Pro will be much closer to 4K natively and provide a better image.

TWB2808d ago

Upscaling is not magic, you cant exactly add more detail to something that lacks it without any extra information.

XB1 S basicly does the same upscaling that every single other TV and PC monitor. The benefit of doing the upscaling at the machine level is that you can provide cleaner and more even upscaling results, instead of relying on some cheap TV botching and making a blurry and messy job with the upscaling.

The difference with PS4 Pro is that it first and foremost uses higher native resolution, and if I understood correctly based on their press release, they are using similar screen resolution/construction technology as Killzone Shadowfall's multiplayer. KZ SF MP used already existing information from the last frame to construct parts of the next frame in higher resolution. It wasnt as good as the native 1080p in the campaign, but really, by looking at the screen you really wouldnt have even thought the base/native resolution was only half of 1080p' in width (what was it? Like 960 x 1080?)

The way I think about it, this difference will probably be even less noticeable with higher resolutions on a standard sized TV that is a couple of meters away.

So yeah, they really are not competing against XB1 S, but are trying to get in the same ballpark as Scorpio with smaller costs and performance. In pure image quality, XB 1 Scorpio will take the edge and MS has said that its a premium product (and presumably with a premium price tag too), Sony is probably just aiming for the more basic consumers who are interested about UHD and looking into cheap alternatives for gaming.

Im curious to see how well it turns out. Its probably going to take a while before DF or someone comparable is going to get their hands on with both machines.

SierraGuy2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

It's not even a competition anymore ps4 pro destroys Xbox one s and it's not much of a price difference. Ive noticed Sony shows by example. And with optimization pc game visuals will also be hard pressed competing against Sony's beast.

blanka45452808d ago

games are on pc lol! Scorpio is garbage who cares! Sony yeah exclusives we all care!. Scorpio=get your pc ready lol!

Mulando2808d ago

it has 2.3 times the flops, but noch 2.3 times the memory-bandwidth nor the cpu-power. This "2.3 times" figure Is pointless. In some cases it will help a bit, but not more.
Well... I waited for this ps4 and the uhd-br drive... well... now I wait a bit more.

the whole pro and scorpio thing is dumb, release them after two or three year with more upgrades and real native 4K games and call them next gen -_-

Yukes2808d ago

Why would they do that, though, when they can trump these half-new consoles up with a lot of fanfare, and know people will buy them? Looks at the obsessing over the power details, and how pretty things could possibly look. That's why they do it.

hiawa232808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

The Pro is 4.2 Tflops, the 1S is 1. or 1.3 at best. That is a nice difference by my math. Why is this comparing the Pro to the 1S? Clearly interms of graphical capabilities the Pro is ahead of the 1S which is an X1 with HDR, and 4K movies, vids, and 4K upscaling for games. The Pro should be compared to a similarly spec PC, or the Scorpio not the 1S.

The Pro should be able to cleanup framerates, and res issues in some PS4 games with its overclocked cpu, and double graphics units. That is all I expect out of it.

Aenea2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

The X1S is 1.3....

----
Thanks for changing it!

hiawa232808d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

Really, .3 made very little difference, lol..

@Aenea. .3 or .4 makes little difference when compared to the 4.2 Tflops of the Pro. That was my point. Not how it compares to the orig PS4.

Aenea2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

@hiawa

It's 30% more, quite a bit. And if .3 doesn't make much of a difference, does .5 make any difference since that's the difference between original PS4 and X1....

conanlifts2808d ago

The xbox 1 s is 1.4 tflops. The original xbox is 1.31 tflops. It's not really in the same league gaming wise as the pro, but the s is the cheapest way to buy a uhd player. Frustrating for many that sony didn't add a uhd player, although it's not gaming. But judging from comments i have seen it is something many wanted.

2808d ago
hiawa232807d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

That is what I was saying, before Aenea, responded, .3 makes little difference when compared to the 4.2 Tflops Pro, which was my whole point.

As far as Sony not including a UHD drive. It may be a good thing, as why drive up your cost when physical media sales are declining, and why put the drive in their gaming console when it may compete with their standalone 4k player. Maybe, Sony is looking at the bigger picture.

Ju2807d ago (Edited 2807d ago )

That's a thing many cry about...and nobody buys. Loud crowds often don't represent the silent majority reflected by the market. 90% of those people on here don't even own 4k TV. I'm taking bets.

iiorestesii2808d ago

The article says its the answer to the X1S meaning a necessary step in preventing MS from closing the market on people purchasing consoles specifically for 4k TVs. Most people with a 4k set probably wouldn't hesitate to spend more money on a console that was designed to output 4k. The PS4P prevents MS from enjoying this target market exclusively for very long.

Midane2808d ago

So, PS4 PRO is 200% faster than Xbox One S. Nice. ^_^

moegooner882808d ago

For starters, it has been confirmed that the Pro will offer "support for faster frame rates" for select titles. They have noted that consumers should look for packaging emblazoned with a "PS4 Pro Enhanced" icon.

I am a tech noob, but I am assuming depending whether the game running on the original PS4 is mostly utilizing CPU or GPU will be the deciding factor ?

yeahokwhatever2808d ago

the developer is the determining factor. Sony is leaving it up to them how they want to use the extra horsepower.

C-H-E-F2808d ago (Edited 2808d ago )

However, If you do have a Pro, and you buy a game that is on the PS4(regular/slim) and it didn't have any update whatsoever, that game will run better (smoother) on the Pro because of the extra processing power by default.

New PlayStation Handheld Reported Again, Supposedly Runs PS4 Games

You might be correct, but it depends on the price point. Also, most PC gamers wait years for Sony releases, so it might be better just to get the PS4 handheld.

How many people will buy this at launch? As a Vita owner, I'd definitely hold back after how Sony's support for that turned out.
Also, PSP played near PS2 quality games, PS Vita played near PS3 quality games, shouldn't the next Playstation handheld be aiming for near PS5 quality?

A lot of things in that document turned out to be cancelled plans though. We should have seen the digital series X by now and the new controller.

Microsoft has a long ways to go when it comes to the gaming industry

ravens522h ago

This is another thing MS is doing that I don't like. Like chill, foster your teams and try to make the beginning of some good series on the already powerful series x. They are trying to rush this gen. It's coming up on four years. So this gens life will be 5 years and on the 6th the next gen will be released? Stupid. Makes no sense especially seeing how long everyone has supported the Ps4 and Xbox 1. Annoying.

OtterX1h ago

Yea, they have had terrible 1st party support for 2 gens now. Why would anyone rush out to get this new XBox, especially when they plan to bring the games they do have to Playstation? I love PS5 + Switch + PC. I don't see the point of an XBox console at all.

Reaper22_1h ago

Perhaps some people like playing games on xbox.

Sonic18812m ago(Edited 0m ago)

"I don't see the point of an XBox console at all."

You can play Xbox games on a smart TV in 1080p now lol as long it has the game pass app

Einhander19721h ago

So, Microsoft has sold less consoles than the previous gen the past two generations with this most recent generation falling off the most. And in this current generation the most popular console by far is the least expensive one. But they are going to try to push out another console that is supposedly powerful not the thing that actually worked for them a cheap game pass console...

And they are going to come out with this thing when the PS5 Pro will be on the market so it's unlikely that they will be able to make any significant power gains. Certainly not to the point that PlayStation 5 won't be able to play the games. Heck we see how long the PS4 has stayed relevant, PS4 games will still be getting released in 2026. And given their console sales track record no publisher under the sun is going to skip PlayStation to make games for xbox. And with the way Microsoft is positioning themselves as such a rival publisher I can't imagine many publishers really looking to prop xbox up. Heck we hear rumors of publishers skipping xbox for releases.

If this is actually true, this thing is DOA.
