Top Ten Games in Need of a Movie Adaptation

Following Electronic Theatre’s previous look at the best and worst movie adaptations in videogames, it was decided that we should further aid the industry’s use of licences by offering our pick of the top ten videogame franchises that would make good movies. Of course, while there are some games that have bucked the trend of being bad adaptations of movies, there are far fewer that have worked the other way around, and so deciding which franchises are strong enough to risk the ordeal of a motion-picture release was no easy task.

A lot of those I would disagree.

For example, we have enough zombie movies out there already. One is made nearly every year. I aint saying dont make it, but how different would it be?

Duke Nukem would just get panned by almost everybody.

And if they make a Portal movie, how would that work? For 80% of the first game, there wasnt to big of a story. It'd be all silence from Chell anyway.

And if it were up to Hollywood, Gordon Freeman would be played by The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) ¬¬

QuodEratDemonstrandm4703d ago

Haha. If it were up to Hollywood, Frodo Baggins would have been played by The Rock.

Fortunately, it's not always up to the studio suits. So we could see Ellen McLain as GlaDOS and someone other than Cameron Diaz as Chell.

What about Mass Effect and STALKER oh wait.....they already have movies being made..oops!

there are a couple very good fan made HL2 movies.

Escape from city 17 and dam i forget the other ones titles. sorry.

Venoxn4g4703d ago

there is stalker movie.. old one though, but is :)

zerocrossing4703d ago

Tomb Raider, Resident evil are the only 2 game to movie franchises I can think atm that didn't suck, But many fans of the games dislike them dislike them.

My opinion is if your going to do it do it right.

Ducky4703d ago

My opinion is, why bother when the medium you're in transcends movies to begin with?

zerocrossing4703d ago (Edited 4703d ago )

Exactly, Its just a way to make even more money out of a franchise, The thing I dislike most about it is they usually try to alter whatever they get a hold of and end up butchering it.

NukaCola4703d ago

The Resident Evil movies are pretty bad. I think that the CGI flick Degeneration was pretty sweet.

Hozi894703d ago (Edited 4703d ago )

You forgot Prince of Persia and Silent Hill.

To hell with Videogame movies from Hollywood. They just get richer for ruining our beloved games. I would gladly donate money to any dev. who are interested in turning their very own video game into a CGI cinematic experience. Like Square-Enix did with FF7:Advent Children, and Namco is doing with Tekken:Blood Vengeance with 3D!!!

If I had my say, I'd like to see these games become movies.

1. Dead Space
2. Infamous
3. GOW
4. Castlevania(already in the works by Hollywood, bleh)
5. Bioshock

Who's with me?

zerocrossing4703d ago (Edited 4703d ago )

That's true those 2 were good as well. I agree, I think devs like Square-Enix and Namco show that sticking by what made the games great to begin with is the way to go, Not like Hollywood that change the things that made the games great and just end up ruining everything.

Hollywood's got Castlevania in the works? Oh damn...

Hozi894703d ago (Edited 4703d ago )

@Zero.

This is all I know about the Castlevania movie.

The only one from that list I would gladly see would be God Of War. I can think of a LOTR type trilogy full of epicness.

AlienFodder4703d ago (Edited 4703d ago )

How about something inspired from the Assasin's Creed series? If done well, it could be really great.

Oh heck, I gotta be honest here and say that I just want to see a flesh-and-bones Ezio! LOL!

Trevor78434703d ago

They actually do have something filmed about Assassins Creed. Its called Lienage. Its a short Live action film about Assassins creed, Very well done for what it is.

AlienFodder4702d ago

Yes, I saw it on YouTube. Great little film. Now if they could reproduce something like that on a grander scale, I think it could have a lot of potential. :)

I never got around to mass effect - I’m skeptical that it would hold up if I were to try it now

Furesis38d ago

I would say it does. The combat is a bit shit for todays standards but everything else is great.

I can't fk with this list. They missed on alot of games probably before the writers times. Also I know people loved some portal but I was never a fan.

Tomb Raider 1
Driver 1
Abe’s Odyssey
FF6
King of Fighters 94
Mortal Kombat OG

Street Fighter 2
Resident Evil 1

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name81d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno81d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno80d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure80d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
