PS5 will see ‘smaller first party games’ this year including Astro Bot claims insider

It’s rumoured that there will be at least some PS5 exclusives released this year from Sony, but it’s still unclear if that includes Concord.

Lightning7735d ago

This is by the legendary leaker Snitch. He has like a 90% accuracy rate.

This bit of news only makes sense. sony won't have any major first party games until next April and beyond. Astro Bot and Silent Hill 2 make sense for release. Still wondering if Concord releases this year.

neutralgamer199233d ago

Sony said no 1st part existing franchises. There might be 2nd party games and new IP’s. Since this year started Sony has had 4 big blockbuster exclusives which all came from 2nd party studios. They know when they need to give their 1st party more time to rely on 2nd party partners and plan accordingly

Mr Logic33d ago

Absolute rubbish. They said, "No big first party IP on the level of God of War and Horizon." They ABSOLUTELY did not rule out first party games entirely.

Lightning7733d ago

Correct Concord and Fair Games could be slated for this year. silent Hill 2 is this year.

Square is third party but I get what you're sayin.

Cacabunga33d ago

Sony must at least reveal a few..

shinoff218333d ago

They definitely said existing ip lightning.

Lightning7733d ago (Edited 33d ago )

So you expect new AAA ips releasing from Sony this year?

1Victor18d ago

@Lighting the behind the curtain Sony CEO/CFO have spoken (insert thunder soundtrack here )

In my opinion Sony have a sleeper kids game on Astro Bot and don’t use it 😩as much as they should

Goodguy0135d ago

Asides from Nintendo which are prepping for their next gen hardware, it's been kinda odd for sony and mcsft in terms of first party. 3rd party and indies have been kicking ass though.

Profchaos34d ago

Microsoft is busy trying to buy the industry to have more games while Sony cares more about the quality of the games which means long wait times.

Modern gaming it kind of sucks because it takes years for us to get a release sometimes a decade while back in the day on the ps2 era a game would be done in a year or a huge project may require two.

Nintendo actually have it the best out of all companies as development times for weaker hardware like the switch are far quicker meaning we can see more switch games get pumped out with a high level of polish they may still look like 7th gen games but they still look good really

Sonyslave334d ago

Lol you do know sony brought 95% of their studioss'.

Nooderus34d ago

Japan Studio used to make quality stuff, otherwise Sony first party games kinda stink man

fr0sty34d ago

Sony didn't buy a single publisher... Sony buys individual studios years after working with them as second party partners and the studio proving they can make system sellers. Microsoft buys entire publishers in an attempt to monopolize the industry.

tay870134d ago

@nooderus. if you think sonys 1st part stinks, you must think xboxs really sucks. Sonys 1st party trounce xboxs. Xbox has way more studios now but they pale in comparison when it comes to quality. Xbox can only dream of having studios like naughty dog, santa monica, insomniac, guerilla and sucker punch. All of these studios have released games in the last decade that have been nominated for game of thr yr. Naughty dog, santa monica, guerilla , and insomniac all have multiple games nominated in thst time span. ND actually won it twice and Santa Monica won it once. No other publisher has more nominations or wins in the last decade.

fr0sty34d ago

The bots are sore to hear it, but you can't argue with the truth when it has facts to back it up.

New astro bot is fine by me. Still go back and play the tech demo every few months.

RNTody34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Honestly I'd just be happy if we could get a Sony show this year that shows us gameplay for Wolverine, Naughty Dog's new IP and Sucker Punch's game, whether it's a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima or a new IP and Bluepoint's new game. Housemarque released Returnal in 2021 which took a bit over 4 years to develop, so hopefully they'll be ready for an announcement soon of what they're working on. Bungie... we'll see.

However with Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin and Final Fantasy Rebirth, it hasn't exactly been a quiet or ineffective year while the first party's are keeping things hush.

Profchaos34d ago

Well if you want to see wolverine GamePlay there's a metric ton of it flying around the net

RNTody34d ago

I'm not going to watch leaked alpha footage that the developer never intended to see the light of day. I'm going to watch a proper showcase when it's ready.

Nooderus34d ago

"I'm going to watch a proper showcase when it's ready" shut up tod

RNTody34d ago

@Nooderus Forgive me, nii-san.

Profchaos34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Astrobot to me that's huge I hope it's both a flatscreen game and a VR game like gt7.

One of my favourite gaming experiences last gen was astro bot resuce mission on psvr it's almost criminal that more people never got a chance to experience the game it was one VR game that actually could have been ported to a flat screen experience with some minor control tweaks.

A unique single player game with no MTX garbage? It’s almost as if we went back in time to when gaming was actually fun. Can’t wait to play it!

Cacabunga6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Same! Only missing a confirmation about a physical release.. i have been busy i havent checked all the news.. this game will hit hard..

Gamers please support this!!

-Foxtrot3h ago

I hope this games gets a special edition…I will support the f*** out of them.

ravens525h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I'll be getting it when it comes out

-Foxtrot3h ago

I heard people on Twitter say “it feels like we got a video game” and honestly after watching this bright, vibrant, fun trailer which makes you smile giving you flashbacks to those old school glory days, I kind of “get it”

It does feel like it’s just a fun looking game over something like Concord which just screams “give me your money”.

Psychonaut857h ago

Sweeeeeeet. Stoked for this. Curious what the price point will be. I’m gunna guess $50.

Gamble207h ago

Why wouldn’t it be $69.99? It’s a fully featured game with no micro-transactions and releasing with a physical copy available. Nothing wrong with charging the normal price for a full game.

DivineHand1256h ago

By Sony's own admission from earlier this year, they were not going to release any AAA 1st party games this year so it is reasonable to believe this should forgo AAA pricing.

GamingSinceForever6h ago

I believe they called this a smaller title, so no it won’t cost $60 or $70.

Psychonaut855h ago

Simply because I don’t know the length of the game. It looks substantial. But also, in terms of the IP, the other Astro Games have been great but have essentially been tech demos. If it turns out this is the same length as say Ratchet and Clank, then I’d be fine paying full price. If it’s like 8 hrs or something, then full price is a tough sell. I really don’t think it will be $70.

Relientk777h ago

Everything about this game sounds and looks great. Plenty of reasons to be hyped about Astro Bot

MaximusPrime_6h ago

I'm in my 40s and have enjoyed Astro game, when it was free to download for PS5. Duelsense controller is what made this game really good and fun.
New Astro game will be fun for all people not just kids.

romulus235h ago

Astro Bot is played and enjoyed by adults too, so just stop with the childish comments.

elazz3h ago

I play games to have fun. That’s what I did when I was 10, that’s what I’ll do with this game as a 30 year old. A true platformer like Astro Bot. Probably will be my favourite game of the year. This year played plenty of Helldivers 2, ff7 rebirth, the last of us 2 and Mortal Kombat 1 but Astro Bot. That’s gaming at its purest

anast3h ago

Taste might not be something that can be learned.

-Foxtrot3h ago

I hope to God it becomes a bigger hit than they were expecting

Especially if hypothetically Concord fails because it would show Sony that people care more about these types of games over live service generic crap.

anast3h ago

I think it'll be bigger than Concord, but how big I'm not sure. Astro Bot is going to kill it though, that's for sure.

I'm sorry, Astro Bot, I wasn't familiar with your (PS5) game

Astro Bot was finally unveiled at May’s State of Play, and the soulful platformer immediately made its way onto Aaron Down's PS5 wishlist.

"As the Astro Bot trailer begins, I’m immediately reminded why I was so unphased by Astro’s Playroom, as the adorable lil homie is greeted by a floating PlayStation controller. This veneer of indifference is quickly dispelled, though, as it quickly transforms into a jet plane – ‘huh, okay, that’s kinda neat,’ I thought to myself. From there, for the rest of the three-minute trailer, my jaw refused to retract itself from the floor as I gobbled up virtual dopamine like orbs in a game of Snake."

This is a fun read

abstractel20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

Astro's Playroom is surprisingly fun and a cute PS5 launch title. IMO it uses the dual sense really well, definitely among the best examples of the DS's features. Quick Edit: Didn't see the other responses below regarding Astro's Playroom.

fr0sty15h ago

Astrobot Rescue Mission is easily one of the best VR games ever made, and definitely the best VR platformer ever made.

VersusDMC1d 1h ago

Doing a replay of astros playroom and it is still fun and charming. Love the nods to other series.

anast22h ago

it's a good game. The first PS5 game I played.

Abnor_Mal23h ago

I actually never finished Astros Playroom, while the game was fine I wished it was in vr, I should redownload and finish before the new release.

MrNinosan20h ago

It's an amazing 5 hour Platinum game 👍

Abnor_Mal19h ago

To be honest I’m not into platformers, never have been, but playing Astros Rescue Mission in vr really helped me get into a platformer. Which is why I was somewhat let down with Playroom which was only flatscreen, and brought back my inability to play such games.

abstractel20h ago

Did you play the Astro VR game? Great game, just a shame it's only on PSVR1.

Abnor_Mal19h ago(Edited 19h ago)

Yes I played Astros Rescue Mission, and really liked it which is why I saw slightly upset Astros Playroom also was not in vr.

Agreed it’s a shame many of PSVR1 games are stuck on it without dated control schemes, I’ve been saying from the beginning that Sony should have had its studios work on PSVR2 iteration of their vr games, and pay the third part devs to update their games for PSVR2. Not all the games, just the highly traded games that sold well on their platform and had high player engagements.

Games like Mortal Blitz, Arizona Sunshine, Killing Floor, Farpoint, The Persistance, Superhot, Borderlands, Sniper Elite, not to mention Skyrim and Doom VFR, and many more deserved better controls.

Chocoburger22h ago

People ignoring Astro's Playroom need to go back and actually play the dang thing! Its short, sweet, memorable, AND ITS FREE! PLAY IT IF YOU HAVEN'T YET!

Crows9016h ago

It was widely disregarded even though it's so evidently great

northpaws22h ago

Can't wait... I also want another VR one too though... my PSVR2 needs some actions -_-

Concord’s first look doesn’t fill me with hope for the PS5 exclusive

Concord will open its servers to players this August, but The Loadout's Aaron Down feels the PS5 exclusive isn’t doing enough to separate itself from the live-service pack.

NOTHING fills these "Journalists" with hope.. sheesh..what do these people want!? the game looks pretty good to me

RaidenBlack1d 8h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

Yea kinda looked good to me too
But I think people are burned out from hero shooters. Fans were expecting something similar to killzone or such.
Anyway it seems that every upcoming Sony GaaS titles will target specific sub genres.
Correct me if I am wrong here:
Concord is a team-based hero shooter.
Fairgames is a heist competitive shooter with some twist.
And Marathon is an extraction shooter with it's own twist.
...
edit: I doubt Fairgames can surpass the likes of The Rivals, which is really well made and is getting constant updates ... and most of Haven studio is comprised of ex-Ubi devs.

Michiel19891d 6h ago

it looked like Team Fortress 1.5. but then without any of it's charm

purple1011d 4h ago

The rivals, You mean the finals? Or is there another

I thought it looked okay myself, but wanted much more, wanted killzone in space. Got Mario with guns

RaidenBlack1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

yea ... oops, The Finals, thanks @purple101
Don't know why I typed rivals ... maybe coz of the recent SoP's Marvel's Rivals
but my point still stands:
' Doubt Fairgames can surpass the likes of The Finals, which is really well made and is getting constant updates ... and most of Haven studio is comprised of ex-Ubi devs. '

TheProfessional22h ago

They definitely shouldn't have made Marathon an extraction shooter if that's what it is. There's way too many already. Extraction/horde modes used to just be a bonus or dlc, now there are entire games that are just that.

I think alot of Sony fans are turned off because we want single player games and well this isn't even close. Personally this could've turned out to be pretty dope as a single player game, the same with evil dead, Texas chainsaw, but no these companies wanna keep forcing this sht down our throats. They can keep all themes multi-player stuff

Redemption-6410h ago

They are not forcing anything. People have been claiming for years for Sony to diversify their games to include multi-player, then start crying when they actually do. They can release both types of games, play what you want, don't know why people get so triggered when a game they don't want is made

StormSnooper1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

ONE game doesn’t “fill him with joy”.

-Foxtrot1d 5h ago

It’s not just journalists this time..:

It looks generic as f***

We need to start being honest with ourselves not just “oh it’s Sony / PlayStation”

Lightning771d 2h ago

That's my issue is how generic it looks. Sony couldn't even be creative with it. (I get it, they specialize in SP stuff not LS) but they could had their finger on the pulse better and have something unique not just ok make an overwatch type of LS.

I guess that's why it's called the Live Service gamble.

If nobody plays it then lay offs will definitely happen here.

StormSnooper20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

Does it though? I mean, what makes it “generic”. Is it the art style? Or the characters? Sure we’ve seen similar characters in the past. We’ve seen a diverse character roster with asymmetric abilities in the past. But, why are they required to reinvent the wheel? It’s not like there is anything else that can be done in this genre. So I think gameplay is where it needs to shine, and the jury is still out on that subject.

If they land the gameplay, then I see it being a success. Even though this genre is not my personal cup of tea. To write it off as “generic” for its simplistic design is a mistake.

Pepsi_Man30001d 5h ago

Understandable. this shit looks basic af.

Hotpot1d 5h ago

ah not to me.. I’m a playstation dude but this game just feels like OW copycat, not to mention the team from cinematic trailer acts suspiciously like Guardian of the Galaxy.. the yolo green dude is starlord, the stern girl is gamora, muscle dude that talks weird is draxx, and mascot robot is groot.. just need a foul mouthed dude there and it’s GotG from wish.

jwillj2k41d 4h ago

Game looked boring as hell. Stop being a fanboy.

Lightning771d 3h ago

Tbh I thought it was gonna be this person action LS expedition type of game the way the CG frames the game.

Instead it was just an Oveewatch clone done worse. Characters and art style doesn't stand out at all. It was just generic to me personally.

InUrFoxHole1d ago

I liked it but most didn't. There was more excitement for astro lol

I would try it if it was free like foamstars but no I wouldn't purchase this game.

thesoftware7301d 6h ago

It has really nice, clean graphics, and overall, it looks good..

Too bad, I don't play Overwatch-type games.

Crows901d 5h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

The only way I would consider this is if it has enough variation in team objectives and good overarching plot.

If it innovates in the arena shooter and also adds PVE elements then they could have something pretty cool in their hands. Otherwise it is a no from me.

And of course...mtx and crappy mentization methods is another big NO

thesoftware7301d 4h ago

Indeed, a PVE mode, like zombies or Firefight would definitely get my attention.

MTX I don't care about as I can easily ignore them in games..but if they have them, they should make them earnable in game.

Elda1d 5h ago

I lost interest once I heard it's PvP only.

Sonic18811d 4h ago

They canceled Factions 2 for Concord 😉

Pepsi_Man30001d 5h ago

what a shame. This couldve worked perfectly as a gotg type single player game. But they decided to make pvp hero shooter #743
