Half-Life 2 art director finally reveals why he left Valve

To many gamers, Valve is the epitome of good in the gaming industry. They produce great games, they’re heavily involved with and support their community, and Gabe Newell is one of the nicest guys you’ll find in the industry. So one has to wonder, why would anyone leave a company with such a good reputation? The former art director on Half-Life 2 did, and now he’s finally revealed why.

Valve becoming bigger and bigger = better and better games and sales on steam.

nveenio4329d ago

Yeah, I can definitely see too big being a problem. Things start to become a bureaucracy, and that begins to limit creative freedom.

BlackPrince 424329d ago

Not quite, many studios get worse when they get larger because too many voices dulls the creative edge of the studio.

Insomniac Games is a victim of this.

nveenio4329d ago

I agree. Sony is one company that is good at finding a balance between these things. Valve hasn't yet been affected, I don't think...so maybe they'll do okay, too. But this dude that left definitely knows their inner workings better than any of us, and it just didn't suit him anymore. I can respect that.

Primalfear4329d ago

Fanboys always find a way to bring Sony into every Article. *sigh*

nveenio4329d ago

Actually, I brought up Sony because my first thought was, "Sony is big, and it doesn't hurt their first party creativity." It has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a fanboy, though I totally admit to being one. Sony games are awesome. I was countering my earlier claim that big could = bad. Obviously, it's not always true. So I gave an example.

Emo children call out fanboys in every comment.

iNFAMOUZ14329d ago

are you kiddin primal, this site is 80% sony fanboys, xbox gets treated like shit on a daily basis, the nerve of your blind hidden trolling.

coolman2294328d ago

@Inveni0 Sony doesn't develop games. What they do is buy studios to make games exclusively for their consoles. Valve is a software company as opposed to Sony, which is mostly a hardware company. The comparison is a little off.

nveenio4328d ago (Edited 4328d ago )

Sony has so many studios, it's ridiculous...and they're all SCE studios. Let me show you:

spoken like a politician, nice.

"Valve becoming bigger and bigger" = I want more money

plain and simple. he wanted a bigger paycheck and he did not get it so he left. plain and simple

HardCover4329d ago

That's the dumbest shit I've heard all month.

Time to go unplug my internet and check if the sun still exists.

Crazay4329d ago

All the people I know in the industry especially on the artistic side, are in it for the love of the art and they want to be pushed to new limits with their craft.

If Valve started to do too many cookie cutter products, then i can see why someone as well respected as him would want to go elsewhere. somewhere they can use their imagination and create new and interesting things instead of the limitless garbage.

ATi_Elite4329d ago

1. Valve is The Best! They are passionate about their games and fans so no worries from them. They remain a Private company to keep the "Suits from screwing things up".

2. Dishonored seems like a Bioshock clone, sorry but it does but that may be a good thing.

3. He went with the money and power so no complaints about leaving.

4. your next game or any thing you make will not be better than Half Life 2. HL2 was the result of great minds working together and not one individual.

strauser3604329d ago

Wow. You are a pure Valve fanboy. congrats.

Crazay4329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

Gabe probably ate his lunch one too many days.

"GABE WANTS MOOOOOOAAAAAAAAR"

Jazz41084329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

Is there ever a time that a valve article can be written without some a hole commenting on Gabes weight. Everyone has problems and issues and we as humans should not stoop to the level of making fun of people for there issues. Grow up.

Crazay4329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

Shhhhh Jazz...No one was talking to you. it was said as a joke. I don't care that he looks like the stereo typical overweight nerd. Just that he's a loud mouth Dbag who runs a company that yes, has made some great games but fails to meet deadlines AND that he allows it like its some sort joke. "Valve Time"

Bathyj4329d ago

Lighten up Jazz, fat people are the last group we're still allowed to make fun of.

Might as well enjoy it until thats gone too.

Oh yeah, I forgot about red headed step children.

Fair enough, really. Can't argue with his reasoning. The guy wants to work and create. Since Valve have unlimited resources they can pump into games, they can just sit back and take their time. Lord knows when we'll see anything new from Valve in terms of a new game, a new world, a new IP. That's what this guy wants to do.

BlackPrince 424329d ago

So in other words, this guy left Valve because he's actually interested in making games, not piddling around for years at a time buying small studios, appropriating their in development games, and then publishing it as if Valve had been working on it all along.

I understand that......................and this explains why Dishonored gives me the HL2 feel.

chukamachine4329d ago

HL3 has already taken too long.

HL2 sold 12million on PC.

Vladplaya4329d ago

I feel Antonov, it's one thing to work for a big and successful company, but its another thing to be stagnated as an artists with nothing much to do.

He is an artist, and I respect the guys for going with his heart and taking a risk on working with new people in smaller company just so he can bring out something new out of his talent. Good luck to him, Dishonored looks great so far too!

Steam Account Transfer Via Will on Death is Not Permitted, Valve Confirms

In case you were curious, a Steam account transfer via will is not permitted according to an official response from Valve.

anast4d ago

The games are theirs. People just pay to ride the ride.

Skuletor3d ago

Would be nice if the article's writer looked into and reported whether other digital game libraries could be transferred over via will (Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, EGS, EA app, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Launcher etc) instead of this half-baked piece but it's probably the same for all of them anyway

Kornholic3d ago

This seems like a way bigger issue than mandatory PSN account linking for PlayStation games.

So where is the outcry?

Skuletor3d ago

It's not like PlayStation is doing any different.

"You may not sell, buy, trade, or transfer your Online ID, Account or any personal access to PSN Services through any means or method, including by use of web sites."
https://www.playstation.com...

Kornholic2d ago

So you are that saying Steam is being very anti consumer with its policies. That's why I'm so baffled by the lack of outcry from the PC audience.

NotoriousWhiz3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

It's not like your account just stops working when you die. Include your email, account id, and password in the will (including the password to your email) and your survivors should have no problem using your games.

anast3d ago

PC gamers are a different lot. They don't mind renting their games forever, they don't mind spending money on overpriced equipment, and they don't mind fiddling with settings for hours before they even play the game, but linking a PSN account demands a riot. This is hard to understand, but then again, we all have to draw our lines somewhere.

Skuletor3d ago

You sure talk a lot of nonsense.Go look up the percentage of digital sales compared to physical sales of PS5 games, then tell me again about "renting" games.

mandf3d ago

Overblown funny and 100percent true

anast3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

There is no option at all to buy a physical copy of a PC game... And more people game on consoles for the reasons that make PC gamers a different lot.

VIK21213d ago

it's not so much the linking but the fact that certain countries aren't allowed to access psn...

VIK21213d ago

@anast I have a disc ps5 since launch, initially I bought some disc games, but I can't be bothered to walk to a physical store nowadays... I just buy the titles when they go on special sale or gray market store like CDKeys...

DustMan3d ago

PSN was a different story altogether. It kept people who bought the game from playing in countries that PSN wasn't supported. I never understood the issue anyway.

I don't know if PC stuff is overpriced considering that you can buy a new video card with the same amount of money you'd spend over 5 or 6 years paying to play games online with a console. I'll never pay double to use the same connection. That is what I'll never understand about console gamers. "let me pay an extra hundred & twenty dollars a year to use the same internet I pay for monthly and use on literally every device in my home for free....except for my Playstation"

Extermin8or3_3d ago

@Skuletor about 50-60% of sales are digital for most games. Meaning 40-50% are physical....

anast3d ago

@VIK

You might not but you are not the expectation that creates a universal.

Skuletor3d ago

@Extermin8or3_
Right and where are you getting that information from?
https://www.statista.com/st...

@anast

"Renting games"
In the fourth fiscal quarter of 2023, approximately 77 percent of Sony Corporation's PlayStation gaming sales were generated via digital downloads.

"overpriced equipment"
Some people are willing to pay a premium for better performance, the way you keep talking about the PS5 Pro on N4G proves you're a hypocrite in that regard but whatever, lol

"fiddling with settings for hours before they even play the game"
Most pc games will give the option to scan your system to choose recommended settings or start with moderate settings that will run the game fine but you're free to mess around at your own leisure, to improve performance or quality if you wish to. For those that don't want to, there's free software that can do that for you, such as Nvidia's Geforce or AMD's AMD Catalyst. Geforce Experience even gives you the option of choosing whether to prioritize performance vs image quality with a simple slider for easy optimization, it's not rocket science, like you try make it out to be.

"linking a PSN account demands a riot"
Playstation selling Helldivers 2 in regions without the legal means to create a PSN account by Sony's own standards, then telling people in those regions that already bought the game that they can no longer play the game, isn't a cause for concern? Though you've already heard about that but keep going along with your own narrative because of your weird vendetta against PC on here.

This is hard to understand, but then again, we all have to draw our lines somewhere.

PRIMORDUS3d ago

I don't rent I torrent to keep, if they take them down that's ok I don't care I have them LOL. I do buy PC games but very little as I want full control which is why I torrent to keep them in my collection, and I do not give a fuck what the devs or publishers want. I never did never will.

anast2d ago

@DustMan

Just like you can choose play games on low to barely mid settings for the price of a PS5, you can also choose not to game online on the PS5. So, now you are getting a better gaming experience and not paying extra for online.

Unannounced Valve 6v6 Shooter MOBA Footage Leaked

ESTNN writes: "A leak for Valve's 6v6 3rd-person shooter MOBA has supposedly been released ahead of time. And if the reports are true, fans of the genre have much to be excited for."

XiNatsuDragnel10d ago

Deadlock looks like bioshock and Moba had babies

JunonZanon9d ago

Valve really cannot count to 3.

Number1TailzFan9d ago

They should've had a new L4D like 10 years ago, it can be expanded upon a lot more but they just left it collecting dust.. it was a good game for its time but L4D2 doesn't have nearly enough content these days to keep players engaged, and it needs a serious graphics upgrade

mastershredder9d ago

Nice bend at the knee there Gabe. Seriously? A quirky character arena shooter? This late into the me-too-shooter market? I thought you guys were so much better than that crap. Gabe must need a bigger yacht.

kitano19478d ago

clown comment, valve are famous for letting their devs work on whatever they want as they have no share holders to please. hence why we rarely get games from valve but when we do they generally are great.

icefrog, the original modder who created dota on warcraft 3 is working on this with some other members at valve.

Of course it is this is why big companies gobbling other companies is bad.

Cacabunga25d ago

yes and this is what happens when you sign pact with the devil himself..

rakentaja24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

The situation looks like this in reality. Of course, I don't know all the nuances, but an independent studio generally wants to go under a big company to get financial backing so they can make the games they dream of. Then a bad game is made...for some reason...the big company gets disappointed, a lot of money was spent on them and they had to shut down the company they bought, because they lost faith in them. That's exactly what happened. I don't know what happened to Tango...

I_am_Batman24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

@rakentaja: You don't need to sell your company to get financial backing. Not to mention that the idea that you're going to be allowed to make the game of your dreams under a big publisher is naive to begin with.

More often than not, indies are just bad at the financial side of the business. It's common to underestimates the production budget needed and hire too many people leaving the studio in a vulnerable position. A lot of them sell out of necessity, not because they want to.

crazyCoconuts25d ago

There are textbook scenarios where it's good...
Microsoft is definitely not one of those scenarios

RhinoGamer8825d ago

I get it, but frankly, AA failed pretty badly on Redfall. The XBOX production team is also to blame (they are safe as usual) for releasing a game this hyped in a sorry state. There are lots of fail points on Redfall, but only Arkane bears the pain.

MrBaskerville25d ago

They were set up to fail by Zenimax and had been for a while. They should have done Prey 2, but instead were forced to do mp games.

-Foxtrot25d ago

Apparently even with Prey they wanted to name it something else, they didn't want to use the Prey name because it had nothing to do with it.

That alone put a lot of people off playing it out of support for the original.

MrBaskerville25d ago

@Foxtrot
Yeah, it was a mess, that whole business. Could probably also have done a killer Dishonored 3 if given the chance, right after Prey, when they had a top tier team.

darthv7225d ago

the game (at launch) certainly wasnt all that. the performance update later on made it better but Im glad I got the special edition controllers when I did. Those are nice.

crazyCoconuts25d ago

True. We don't know exactly who to blame for what, but end of the day you're not getting paid to put out crappy games.
I hope at least they kept the good people and moved them into other divisions

PapaBop25d ago

"Welcome to the Xbox family, graveyard is out back, what should we put on your epitaph?" Microsoft turning into this generation's EA, spend all those billions on Activision while closing studios they've run into the ground.

TheColbertinator24d ago

lmao forgot about that meme. Still pissed at EA for shutting down Westwood, Pandemic, Origin and Maxis. I will never forgive them for that.

Hofstaderman25d ago

Papa Satya wants his ROI. No free lunch.

rlow125d ago

Why I’m really disappointed in Xbox and MS at large. At the same time let’s not pretend that somehow this isn’t an industry issue. Theirs a graveyard behind every major publisher. The only company I haven’t seen canning people is Nintendo and let’s hope that trend continues.
